Chaotic Crawlers

I picked this up friday night came straight home and ripped everything apart and bolted up one of my Chaotic Crawler Chassis to it. Everything swapped over 100% except for the revo 101mm push rods for the lower links.
I originally put in my Tekin RS and a 18.5 brushless goat motor in with a 15T pinion but for some reason the losi and Tekin and not gettting along one bit. (it keeps going into a thermal shutdown and the motor is burning hot but the tekin temp seems to be fine) I think I will go back to my trustworthy setup of a fxr and a HH 7T puller.

So after the build I took it out and within 5 minutes in my basement I was able to break 2 cross pins on the cvd and I bent one driveline pin becuase it started to slide out.
For some reason my tranny feels really sloppy! I pulled it apart and rebuilt everything thinking a bearing or bushing was missing but everything was there. I get a really loud click (as if it has to shift to engaging gears) everytime I give it a little throttle.
As I said in the first post. I Originally put in a Tekin RS and a goat 18.5 motor. In my axial there is nothing smoother that I have ran than this setup I even like it better than my fxr and HH 7T puller setup (only becasue of the longer run times.) In the losi it feels like it is starving for power to push the worm gears. and it has been cogging for power like crazy. I am running a 15T pinion the gear mesh is set right and I am running big 2200 2cell packs Any advise would be great on what is going on.

I am OCD like that, "thumbsup" I have to be different than everyone else. It might come back and bite me in the butt but I am pleased with the setup as of now.

cool, So now take the axles back out and take them apart and grease the living shiot out of them. then take your drill and run them in for awhile. check and recheck and recheck all your cvds for binding. with this done you should see a reduction in drag.

Thanks "thumbsup" I am itching to take it up against a modified stock setup.

With the stock chassis, if you set up the shocks like Jake's in his setup sheets, it makes a huge difference. I put the limiters in the shocks and changed oil weight and this thing flat out performs now. Yours should do the same with the right shock setup.

Yea I need to tweak with the shocks. I haven't touched them from stock. I sucked them down with zip ties so I could get out on the rocks and find the sweat spot. Ill probably be hitting you for a set of Ti Links soon and I hope you come out with some ti shafts that would be killer.

LOL I just sold my berg to buy the losi and other than breaking a few things I have not looked back or regreted it one bit. Bergs had their initial issues like the stub shafts breaking (even though i never had problems.)Losi will work out the few kinks and we we all be happy with our purchases.

I'm going to take a wild guess. Maybe he makes the chassis and wanted to see what it was like with the Losi running gear.

sucks about the cvd's though!
definately need to give those worm gears a breakin though!

man, that looks awesome "thumbsup"
Maybe try a BEC for the servos to take some of the load off of the ESC? Also, the worms seem to break in a little, so grease them up well and run them, they should get better.

Chaotic, are you still disapointed with the 18.5? I've heard good and bad things about the system. I'm sitting here waiting till I find the right system to buy. I just bought a complete brushed setup and it just doesn't like my losi, so I'm waiting to buy a brushless setup till I get some feedback.

Yea so far I am not a fan. I don't have enough torque to get up some of the ledges that we have had to climb in past comps. I am down to a 15T pinion and it is smoother now but my motor gets so hot I cannot even touch it. My esc has gone into thermal shutdown only after a short run (15 min)

Wow. I like the chassis you have for that. I am planing on running a 35t with my FXR. But I don't have a Losi yet. The one I ordered is at the LHS and he is on vacation.
What brushed set up (that you didn't like) did you use?

I am loving the losi it is coming around by itself. I think the axles just needed to break in a bit. I am not getting as much cogging since I slapped in some grease in both axles.
I tuned it a bit and the thing is screaming now. I just hope I dont break cvd at the next comp.

I never ran a brushed setup. I am running the tekin rs esc and a 18.5 brushless motor with a 15T pinion and a 2200 2 cell lipo. It is a lot smoother, now that the axles are breaking in. I am loving this thing!

How about motor temps?
Have you drained that 2200mah pack? What kind of a runtime are you getting?

It seems like my run times are pretty short around 30 minutes at the most. I dont have a temp guage but the first day I took it out I could not tough the motor it was so hot. Last night I ran it for about 20 minutes and not once did it go into thermal shutdown and the motor was cool as could be. I think greasing the axles and tranny helped a ton.

It will be at the next comp. This thing is killing the lines I used to do in the axial and it is walking up them just as easy as my berg was so I cannot wait to get it out on some real stuff.

Chaotic, I see some post your unhappy with the 18.5, but I'm really dieing to get a full battery out of this thing. I have a 18T spec brushed motor in there now, the wheelspeed is amazingly great, but I havent ran it longer enough to test temps and test the torque, if you were me, would you spend the money and just by a few pinions or purchase the goat 18.5.. I'm a fan of wheel speed and feel the 18.5 may just not be enough and dont want to be stuck with another useless system.

I think once my 18.5 is dialed in it will be great. And like I have said in a few post the motor is getting better as the axles break in. I currently run a 15T pinion and once things break in more I may go up to a 17 or 18T pinion to get a little more wheel speed. I plan on posting up a video or two within the next few days in this post so keep you eyes open for that. watching the video will give you a sense of the wheels speek and little cogging that I am getting right now.

I'll be watching for the video, I'm just like most people, trying to figure out what to buy and hoping not to end up with more unneeded stuff.

Tekin does not even make a 18.5 rs brushless motor Do you mean 17.5?
Have you been run it on 3s lipo?
Mac10
06-02-2009, 04:33 PM
he is running a tekin ESC with a novak 18.5 motor on a 2cell lipo around 2200mah if I remember correctly.
I drove this rig yesterday, it feels like it will loosen up and get better with more driving, but the wheel speed with the 15t is a little slow for me.
I think a 3cell would help a ton along with a larger pinion as long as it doesn't cog out.
this rig is sick though!!!!
I tried to buy it off of him by flashing money in his face but he said no!
it weighed in at 5.5 lbs. and felt crazy capable with what little driving I did with it!

I am going to try to meet up with him tonight and I will loan him a 3cell to try, so he can give you a better idea of what its like with some horsepower behind it!

Thank you for your response once again! My friend is runnign the 18.5 in his with a 18T pinion and says he's got plenty of wheel speed so I went ahead and picked up that combo to run, just sucks I cannot use any my 3s lipos sitting here..

well we ran this rig next to my berg and I just got my ass handed to me by this losi!
the axle clearance is incredible and made all the difference in the world on the stuff we were crawling!
I am very impressed with this rig and love how light weight it is!
of course when I buy mine,it will be rockin the nino chassis as well!(only the best for my rigs)

I though those words would never leave your mouth. I have been debating all night about posting up how bad the losi spanked you tonight so I am glad you did it for me.
I wish we had the video camera because most guys will not believe how bad the losi handed it to the berg tonight. Sorry MWRIGHTT you were a good sport tonight. Just remember you will spank me at the comp becasue chances are the CVD's wont make it through 5 courses.

I have been dying to see how these things look/perform. I am excited for this next comp to see what happens! but if marc is saying that rig spanked him then I am shaking a little! I know how good of a driver marc is!

I agree. The axial axles are the same way. Sometimes you get that slight binding and stuff once you first get them...You just need to run on them for a bit! "thumbsup"
The body seems a little plain to me. I like the OG grappler body more than this one IMO.

Issues - So I have been running pack after pack and still to date zero issues once I swaped out the cvd pins with MIP's. I have made a few tweaks to the chassis and I will post pics up soon.
Video - I have a comp this saturday as long as the weather doesnt dump rain on us all day I will get video and more fun things up.
Motor - I haven't dialed in the 18.5 goat motor in with the Tekin RS like it was in the axial so it went back into the axial for now. I am going to throw in the 21T Emax titan motor and a cheap esc and try that for a bit.
stay posted and I will get a few pictures edited to throw up.
