View Full Version : Need a strong, durable standard size servo
A friend gave me a used TQ3 radio system. I did the toggle switch mod and hooked up another Hitec 645MG on the rear. I ran a couple of batteries thru it here at the house, everything worked great. I went to my crawling spot this afternoon, LOVE 4WS in the big rocks. On my second battery pack, I noticed the rear steer getting slower, much less torque. Before the battery was dead I had lost rear steer all together. :( Other than a set of stripped gears the front 645 has been a good servo. Should I get another 645? The 5645 has more torque and more holding power, seems it would be a good rear servo? I'm using the Super Rooster's 6V to power everything currently, buying materials to build a couple of 6V receiver packs this week. Not ready to go 1/4 scale just yet.

Sounds like the servo is bad or something? On my trucks, when the battery goes dead the motors stall but I still have full function of both servos. I would get another 645.
PS I got some LST and cut the chassis for better clearance!!!!
Yesterday I snapped the pinion shaft in half where the driveshaft connects, its amazing at the traction of those tires.
I'm thinking the servo was bad. I bought it off Ebay. It was packaged in a new box and looked new? I have a 645 on the front, have had good luck with it other than a set of stripped gears. I might just get another 645, I have spare parts now.
Thanks for the offer badtothebone but I don't want a used servo. Hitec will warranty servos as long as you have a reciept, so I need to get one from a hobby shop.
Joey, LST's are hard on stuff! I had a problem rounded out the hexes on wheels. Got stronger wheels now I'm rounding off the hexes on my TTR adapters.

Kenny has killed off a hitech so far and last summer I lost 2 high $ giant scale planes due to hitech servos. Don't know if it is bad servos or hitechs quality has dropped.
Go 1/4 scale  you won't regret it.

i posted info on a new brand of servos on the txt forum called blue bird servos, they have one model # HS-630MG that at 4.8volt has 181 oz/in and at 6.0 volts it has just under 200 oz/in and they have the introductory price at $24.95 + shipping. Id give it a shot myself except fot the fact that i just got done building a duel servo setup for my txt with 2 brand new 6055BB Hitec servos. Im itching to try em though... for 25 bucks... might be worth a shot.... oh yeah, they are standard size.

1/4 scale stuff is da BOMB. They're SUPER easy to mount on a clod. The mounts can be made with a drill and hand tools.
With the 1/4 scale Tower Hobbies (el cheapo) servo, I can shove my 20# truck sideways ;) Even if ALL the weight is on the front it still turns the tires with ease.

Griz.. You are nuts! I would never pay that much for a servo. My Rear servo is an FMA unit, 135 oz-in, full metal gears, EXTREMELY reliable, 30$. I've killed two Kimborough servo savers with it.
For a bit more torque, there is that Blue Bird one above, or 1/4 scale stuff. Get a 1/4 scale servo griz, I guarantee you WON'T go back. The power is just nuts! I need to figure out how to get one on the rear.....

I'm using Airtronics 359s on the Gecko, some Futaba micro servos on the shafty.
The 5945 is $90 at Tower! 8O I ordered a 5645 today. It uses the same gears as the 645's so I have spares. If I kill this servo I'll definitely find a way to mount a 1/4 scale on there.

Well I bought some cheapo servo's from Balsa.com
And what do you think about this as a steering servo? it has 1715oz. of torque.

Yes I am nuts  . In a competition environment I do not want my servos puking on me so I want the best. So far the 5945 has been the best. 8) And I refuse to run servo savers, they do not offer enough control...yes I tried the good Kimbroughs. :D

If my 5945 pukes I will try the Blue Bird, sounds like a good deal but it has to be reliable and I have my doubts about cheap servos. 1/4 scale servos will not werk on The SuperDuke. The coil spring suspension and chassis design just dont give me enough room. Plus the weight is too much for a competition crawler IMHO.
Yes it's pricey, but I am really happy with the performance of the 5945. When I turn the rear tires and climb an obstacle, the servo holds it's position...always. I would recommend it to anyone. 8)
Rckjeep, those servo city units are awesome! 8O

Thanks for telling us about it :)
OK, got my Hitec 5645 mounted on the rear axle of my TXT-1. Very happy with it so far. :) It's rated at 164.2 in/oz @ 6V. It turns much better than my tired front 645 (133.3 in/oz @ 6V). We'll see how long this one lasts.

Ya I got my Blue Birds today they seem ok but we'll how long they last. I bought two front and rear but I think I'll just run front wheel steer just in case one goes to sh!t I have a spare. Maybe I'll mount it to the bed like my spare driveshaft. JK
Edit: Ok I think I just killed it. it's pretty hot. So maybe i just overheated it. it's kinda weird It turns great to the right but left is kinda week. Then It just died. I'll wait for it to cool and check it tomorrow. I think It would be an awesome servo for a 2.2 tired rig. Man it could move those tires with ease. it's definietly stronger than a 645MG but it doesn't like to get bound up. Man my cut BFT's love to eat servo's for dinner

Not that anyone cares but I have been running a jr 8611 on my comp rigs for a while now. Before you all gawk at the price, I can run 4ws with no receiver pack and the servos have 260 oz/in at 6v. I can get them for around $110 each. I know that seems like a lot but its the difference between winning and losing. Im not going to let a 25 or 30 dollar difference make me pull my truck off of the course with a broken servo. Just my .02

Yep, servos dead...
Receiver pack ran out, didn't realize it, then it was really hot then it was dead.
I'm chalking this up to the same thing that took my high tech servos out, so I put a new rx plug on esc. I will try my second el cheapo servo and see what happens.

WHAT???
Something is not right with your setup. If I were you I would NOT turn on the ESC switch and ONLY run the receiver pack until you figure it out.
If I were going to servo's like you I would have probably thrown the whole truck across the garage!

I agree with Badger, 8O , I run Maxx adapters and RPM offset wheels on my Clod axles so my tires put ALOT of stress on the steering servos and I have never burned up a servo. I have stripped a few gears but never killed one. 8O

Badger I've been killing them ever since I cut that red wire to run them just on the RX pack. If I don't turn on the ESC it wouldn't run. I hooked it up like I had before so we'll see what happens now.

If it does not run when your ESC switch if off and you turn on your receiver pack switch then it is wired incorrectly.
You should be able to bypass your receiver pack switch and just plug your receiver pack directly into your RX, and when you do your ESC should be powered on (with out switching on the ESC switch), then if you plug in your 6 cell pack you should be able to drive your truck. The 6 cell pack is powering the motors and the receiver pack is powering the servos.

I think he means that ever since he cut the red wire, he has to turn on the ESC, for the ESC to work, because he cut the wire. With the ESC off, but the RX pack on, he has power to the servos, but not to the ESC, because he cut the wire.
If he were to replace the wire in the ESC (which it sounds like he's done), he wouldn't need to turn the ESC on, just the RX pack, or plug it directly into the RX.
Hey Dave, how's it feel to be talked about third person.
And, which way does the motor go w/a GD-600? :)

it feels strange. But yes you get my problem. I split for the weekend so I haven't driven the truck yet. But while I was gone I saw a sweet buggy that used to be a TJ so I've got some good tuber idea's I pilferred from it. Look for it at a store near you. J/K But will be making a chassis soon.

I picked up some. I'm relatively easy on servos, I try not to crank it when I'm bound up, just cause I know it kills things, and I HATE breakin chit.
Lots of power, slow response. Lots of power. Doesn't even phase my ESC when I'm turning both (1/4 scale servo raped my ESC, I'd try to turn and my rig would slow down  )
Time will tell. I'll probably get out again this weekend.
Its nice being able to get in 10 5-8 minute play sessions after work real quick, god I love these lathe motors :D RC'ing is no longer high maitinence. Just drag it out and rip.
