View Full Version : ~~~RCC Speed Shootout!~~~
STANG KILLA SS
10-09-2009, 06:37 AM
Well we all love crawling here but after awhile at 3 mph we all enjoy some tire ballooning speed to mix things up.
So im putting on a little online showdown. A speed shootout!
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/1748/speedshootoutjpg.jpg

Classes are as shown on the flyer. Sportsman, Pro Stock, Pro Mod, and Rock crawler classes must all be full bodied 4 wheeled, electric RC vehicles powered by its wheels. No tether cars, rockets, ducted fans etc.

The Sportsman, Pro Stock, and Pro Mod classes can be any style chassis, suspension, driveline, wheels/tires etc, with the appropriate power system for its class.

However the Rock Crawler class is a little different. It must be 4wd during its speed passes, and have solid axles front and rear (TLT, Axial, WheelyKing, TwinForce, Losi, Venom, berg, RockForce, etc),. It must also run a rock crawler style body. (i.e. no touring cars, high down force, short course, ect.) No motor limit, no battery limit, no wheel and tire limit, no esc limit, etc. However you may not run more than 2 motors and 2 escs.

Winning runs must be proven with the entire run on video with a GPS unit or radar, and on flat ground. On board telemetry is not accepted. (Spectrum Telemetry System, onboard mph gauges, etc too inaccurate because of calibration needed.)
Were trying to keep this a simple fun contest. Not 20 pages of rules, use common sense as to the intended limits etc. Myself and Jason will be watching the build threads and anyone caught trying to exploit loopholes, we hold the right to add more rules as cheaters appear. Play fair folks. It’s for fun.

All entrants must have been signed up on RCC as a member on or before April 10th 2009, and also must be a current star holding member.

All entrants must have a build thread in the speed section that is updated at least weekly. Previously built vehicles not accepted, must be at least a 50% new build.

You may enter up to 2 classes. But you cannot use the same vehicle. Chassis, suspension, drive train, wheels/tires, and body must all be different. Please post the class you intend to enter in the title or first post of your build thread.
Deadline for all Video Entries is November 22nd 2009 at Midnight.

hmmm, might have to dig out my old parma pan car i had done some preliminary work to turn it into a 12 cell drag car. was planning this simple with a brushed motor and microswitch. too bad there is no nitro class, ive been thinking about building a twin .28 drag car with a proper 4 link rear suspention, this would have been the motivation i needed to get started.
hmmm, re-reading that i had to be on the forums since april, guess im disqualified before i even start. oh well, mabey ill build the electric car and throw the video up anyways

Here's a little tool to help with calculating top speed. Made by a friend of mine, and speed addict, Nick Maslowski.

It helps figure out if your battery can put the amps out to get you to speed.

all the speeds are purely theoretical based only on wheelspeed..lot of factors at play..biggest thing will be keeping tires on rims and cars on the ground,..i think most will be lucky to make 80 mph..sure gonna be a blast trying..and cold up here so traction will definatly be an issue:twisted:..bought myself a supporting membership last night"thumbsup"

You seem to have something amiss with your chassis set up. Contrary to instinct, you need most of the weight as forward as possible. I don't use a wheelie bar in my top fuel dragster and it's been to 94mph in about 1.45s. You need a wheelie bar for SWB cars since they don't have the advantage of wheel base. Also, you may not have enough down force from your wings. Add more angle to them and make sure the rear wing is as close to the rear axle as possible.

i think my main problem is that i have to much downforce on my rear wing and no front wing. also im running a very low weight set up. long story short, im using a 1/18 motor in a 1/10 kit w/ 1350mah lipos. im also using super sticky (their is no way the treatment im using is legal in competition) 2.5 inch foams, the added traction and an extremly heavy throttle finger really isnt helping either.
i have some ideas for keeping the wheels on the ground and this shootout has resparked intrest in my kit. (havent touched it since jan)

i had my garmin mounted to the motor pod, and every time i would try to make a pass or even give it gas in my hand, the GPS unit would shut off when i gave it throttle. could it be the magnets? or RF noise? or just coincidence? (im running old school brushed)

I am using a crew cab truck body.
Our main thing we didn't want was people to use high downforce/touring car bodies for the crawler class.

Sorry for the delay in replying. The rear wing down force doesn't kick in till the car gets to about 50 mph. If you are popping wheelies after that point yes, you will need a wheelie bar. If you are popping wheelies from start line to until the rear wing kicks in, that's due to a combination effect of motor torque and low weight/weight distribution (40F/60R is a good starting point for a 24" car) which absolutely requires a wheelie bar. I am not saying what I "think" to be true, this is what happens at a RC drag race with high traction.
You are spot on that you will have to be very careful with the throttle when you do speed runs. A wheelie bar just makes it more forgiving.

nope, however drivetrain efficiency plays a big part in top speed. a 2wd car, such as the drag race designed chassis use the most efficient drivetrain you can have in an rc. 4wd is great for handling and racing, however if you can get straight line traction with 2wd, why have 4wd???

You answered the question yourself, because a 4wd sedan would be much easier to drive to higher speeds, and in a shorter distance. 2wd on an unprepared surface is squirrely at best.

So....... i guess we will have to do this again at a later date? I'm sure this can be done in all fairness to everyone that has entered the shootout. How about a prize ( a t-shirt or something )to the ones that did have their videos done? Just a thought to be fair to the rules. Or extend the deadline to the end of the month or so and maybe the weather will clear.

I'd have to agree with this.
I'm all for doing it later when we all might have a chance to get our runs in but,in all fairness,I think the ones that did get the vids in on time should be awarded something.
I can kick in a set of Axial 1.9 rings if that would help.

Alls good though, had fun. It's been a combination of things for most of us. Weather, no radar gun, GPS won't fit on the car, build time, and $$$! I have 3 cars for this. Getting them done along with my other builds has been tight as far as $ goes. But the weather is the main thing right now.

I worked with derwood21 and he got the GPS to fit in the car and he busted ass on getting his done in time granted we do live in cali and it doesn't rain as much but the people that got there stuff in on time should get something because they adhered to the rules. Then you can start the comp over again in the spring or summer. If it was me I would have run my car in the rain and most surely there would have been carnage. Here's my $.02

thing is some people have been into this since it was started, other have thrown something together in a few days and gotten a vid in. im at a disadvantage here, my car has been done for 2 weeks now but i cant get a vid in as all it does is rain. i honestly dont think people should be rewarded just because they live were it doesnt rain. honestly having this sort of contest at this time of year wasnt the greatest idea, i understand it was done because its sort of the crawling off season.
as i said before, i think the contest should remain open till spring, id bet we will have a bunch more entries.

ok then instead of having a second annual one in the summer. how about we just move the deadline until the summer?
that way we dont get any "i just found out about this last week"
also elimates any weather "excuses"
and also give plenty of time to everyone find/borrow/mount a GPS etc.
seems like it makes it fair for everyone.
i dont think this is anyones fault. just an acumulation of things, that it just didnt go off as hitched. so instead of just shuting it down. lets keep it open and going, this way no one is unjustly rewarded or denied anything do to any circumstances. keep the oportunitys a level playing feild for all.
let the games begin! (*ahem*... continue!)
new extended summertime deadline to be announced!!!

that i do, however were his can get moving in the rain having a speed controller and some rubber tires with some tread, i have a car with microswitches and foam tires. i tried to get some runs in saturday when the rain stopped breifly, touch the throttle and the car swaps ends. even tried push starting it, as soon as i hit the throttle around it goes. partly my fault because of the way its built, but 95% of rc cars were never designed to run in the rain anyways.
however, putting all that aside, thanx for continuing the contest, im excited again for this. the car might just get a few more mods after christmas to make it a little more drivable, as long as there is some money left my new 1/5 scale doesnt eat.

my little modded nitro motor pushed a 6 pound on road car to 89mph in 300 ft on foams. now it's in my 40 oz drag car, i guess i'll run it out to 300 ft after the chain drives complete . and show you boy's how it's done on foam.:-P"thumbsup"
It would be even better if you could show us how its done via electricity, like is stated in the rules. "thumbsup"

ahh first i'll show you with nitro....."thumbsup" then an electric car that makes about 5 hp. even easier.all it takes i the right weight. it's easyier to go fast, heavy than light.and the right traction compound helps out a lot.also amazing what cheap grape soda sprayed on the ground when sunny, does for traction ,on foams, some crc belt dressing sprayed on the foams.[let tack up] couple rows of medium kofords around tires . an BAM !. like i said before check out the rc drag sites. your doing the same thing we are .a drag car is the world record holder for speed runs. over a 1000 feet ,on foam, dust storm. hmmmmm

Ooh, an extension? Cool! That'll give me time to (1) buy a star, (2) start on my project, (3) save enough money to finish said project!
Question though. What if my entry falls in between classes? Will it simply be bumped into the higher class even though it may not meet the min requirements for that class?

Probably. Wouldn't be fair to the lower class if you weren't in spec.
Personally, I'm just going to keep working on my car without any real direction to any class at this point. Just going to let it fall into whatever group it fits.

Cool, I think I'll follow suit and just build till it's done.
How bout a dirt class? Fastest on dirt instead of pavement!

I was thinking of a Shootout Triathalon. Land, sea, and air all with the same vehicle. THAT would be interesting...

I think it'd be wicked to have a duathlon: one high speed run, plus some sort of standardized rock crawl run. This would show that the rig really is a rock crawler at heart, not just a hybrid 4x4 made to go fast and nothing else. Unfortunately, there's really no way to "standardize" this unless maybe the driver simply submitted video "proving" the rig can actually crawl, too.

Humm. I will be getting a star, but even if I have not been registered since April of this year, may I compete? I got an old eletric 4-tec that needs some love. Sportsman looks like thats the class for me. 9X2, zapped 6 cell pack, and tall gearing would be in my price range.
Found a pic of it...

bringing this back from the dead, maybe its time to start thinking about a deadline for this. not anytime soon, mabey have a may or june deadline to ensure good weather for everyone. just a thought, might get this competition fired up again

I am in, but we have to have a width limit on the crawler class. Otherwise, the most motor wins, which may actually help me:mrgreen:
But at 11in wide, I can only hold 30 for a split second before it rolls:shock:
If no limit, then 15in wide baby, so I can hang on to it!!

That top speed chart is awesome!!!!
Its tougher than you think to get over 50mph with a 4wd crawler. Figuring a hopeful drag coefficient of .75. The drag coefficient is the largest factor, so anyone calculating it, you better be honest about it, or you will be fooling yourself.
My current TT/crawler motor esc has the potiential of 52mph in 5seconds. I don't think running longer than 5 full seconds is dooable.
Pretty cool stuff!!
