Stang, this is Sunny from GCRCDR. Hellbounder posted about the speed runs and I came over to check it out and stumbled onto your build thread. Cool man, you are almost there. Just need the electronics. Good luck!

Not to worry man. I don't have a star yet even though I'm a member since 2007  Sold my clod crawler early last year and got away from crawling. No comps close to Houston at the time.

well i got electronics in it. i had a 15 year old reedy Fury 12T, and a 15 year old Novak Racer esc and put those in. with a 3600 stick pack.

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/5035/promodelectronics.jpg

then i was all amped and ran to the school parking lot behind the house for its first run.

made a pass and then on the return trip i hit a speed bump at about half speed. lol two damn passes and already crashed it. went from about half speed to 0 mph in like .0000001 seconds. just BAM. :(

sheered the zip tie on the battery and ejected it, and the industrial 3M double sided rubber tape on the esc and receiver same thing. sheered that and sent them flying too. it was funny to see the car stop and everythign else keep moving. bent the traction bar a bit but somehow didnt break a single thing!

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/1158/crashn.jpg

even the motor moved forward about 1/8" screws still tight and all
http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/3295/crash2.jpg

was a pretty hard jolt i guess. :D

in the mean time i had ordered some new parts. for one, those teeny tires werent gonna cut it. they just look rediculous, ricer tires on a pro mod, i think not. so i ordered a couple different size tires, bearings for front and rear, and some billet hubs, because just as i was warned the plastic ones split during assembly. still useable, but the spur gear screw holes split.

http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/6479/pmparts1.jpg

http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/2998/pmparts2.jpg

i used the stock bushings outside the new bearings to space out the rear wheels more to fill the wheel wells better, worked great and the pinion still reached.

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/4021/pmparts3.jpg

also borrowed a couple goodies from my old man for the shootout.

use a filament packing tape to secure the batteries. it will shave off weight compared to velcro or zip ties.. and it is strong as hell + it wont catch on crap on the pavement and rub threw.. that is what we used on pan cars works great.. should be able to get it at office max or something like that..

I agree. I use a similar tape from ACE Hardware: Strapping tape. Strong because of the fiberglass strands that runs the length of it and holds well.

where'd you get the billet hubs?
do they use the same stock hardware to mount the wheels onto them?

STANG KILLA SS
10-14-2009, 08:33 AM
bought them at an online RC drag shop, they use 4-40 screws to mount the wheels. yep bolted right up. and a MUCH better system. when removeing the old hubs i found out they had been slipping on the shaft, cant be good when your trying to put the power down. especiall if only one side slips, gonna make for a wild ride!

Cool build!
Hubs look great!
What is the wheelbase at?

What body is that in the first pic?

NeXt559
10-14-2009, 09:28 AM
the body looks to be a willy's pro mod and if i remember correctly the wb sits at 11"

STANG KILLA SS
10-14-2009, 11:47 AM
both are correct.

got some work done on the body

got some wheel well templates drawn up in cad since the body didnt have any.
http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/3765/promodcad.jpg

then got it cut out, because of the rake with the bigger rear tires i had to cut 1/4" off the front, starting at the back of the front fenders going all the way around the front to the other side.
http://img66.imageshack.us/img66/3379/promodbodycut.jpg

then i made the masks, and put them on and taped off the rest of the body.
http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/5417/promodmask.jpg

then i started laying paint. painted the gunmetal first then removed the masks.
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1005/promodpaint1.jpg

thats when everything went to $hit. this is the second time ive used House of Kolor Polycarb paint. and both times it has ruined the body. not only is it super transperant, but the worst is it shrinks horribly almost instantly(20 mins to 3 hours). it cracks open on flat surfaces, and on tight inside corners, it shrinks so much it pulls the paint away from the body, leaving a air pocket void sealed between the paint and the body. SO frustrating. it did this on another body and color i used a year ago. needless to say this will be my last time. also because its so trasperant, the finished product looks like camo. really ruined it. :(

funny story, i was in the empty back parking lot of a bingo land taking the pics. about half way threw a old granny in a beat up 91 sentra pulls in and parks in the corner about 75 to 100 feet from the pro mod. im about halfway done taking pics and i hear her yell:

granny-what is that?
me-huh?
granny-what is that?, some kind of animal?
me- :lmao: i laughed to myself and thought i hope so

...on the way home i thought to myself, "and they let this lady drive?"

mini update.

i finally got my GPS to work and went out in the front street and did a couple quick tests on a not so fresh pack. i got 42.8mph! not bad at all. i was expecting high 30s to be honest. so i ordered a bit faster motor and with a fresh pack im hoping to break 50. not bad for old school power.

9T Double

good to hear you finally got to run with your gps, and that speed isnt bad at all for no testing or anything you should be able to get 50-60 with some more tuning and motor and maybe even after that try to get 70 out of it:twisted:

well i got the 9T put in today. seemed alot slower :( GPS will tell.

but on the 3rd pass i had my first epic crash. right at the peak of my pass it got sideways and started doing the death roll on its side. holy smokes, rolls 20+ times, many in the air at a time. landed on its wheels and drove away. body got pretty banged up, but saved everything, body posts most importantly. this was the first time i ran with the body on. good thing i guess. but no more pretty pics/vid :(

rockrawler
11-01-2009, 04:07 PM
Maybe some more downforce? did you lose strearing when it went sideways? or did the rear lift? Hopeto see some video soon.

STANG KILLA SS
11-01-2009, 04:09 PM
i think it happened as i was coming off the throttle and onto the brakes, i think i was also at full lock steering. probly all driver error. i wasnt going that fast, maybe 40. i never had that problem during all the body off testing.

yeah cause the brakes suck. takes me as long to slow down as it does to get up to speed.

well i give up. ive spent the last 3 days trying to get a speed recorded with 0 luck. im so ****ing frustrated. EVERYtime i give it gas it shuts off the GPS unit. sometimes when i just raise the rear i give it gas it will shut off instantly, and sometimes it rolls 5 feet at low idle before it shuts off. but in MANY MANY attempts ive never got it to stay on for a pass. ive tried new batteries every pass in the GPS, ive tried mounted laying down, mounted upright, in the rear, in the middle, up front. ive even mounted it to the body, once in the top and once on the side door. NOTHING works. im so agrivated. and today i got kicked out of the church parking lot i was using.
out of curiousity i fired up the GPS as i was headed back to work, and it works just fine in the jeep.

id bet the motor is causing too much emi and causing your issues. some electronics are very suseptable to it.

see if you can get a lead sheet and wrap the motor,,other wise you might try running a wire from the negative side of the GPS pcb to the motor can,,you might be able to stabalize the field enough that way

Even easier, get some wire screen (for screen doors) and wrap the gps in it.

What gps are you using? I kept a close eye on my Nuvi and its been working fine. Usually just zip tie it on top of the battery.

i had a thought...wrapping the gps in metal mesh would probably make it lose its signal.

You might just try making a shield instead to put between the gps and motor. Fold the mesh into a square a few layers thick and find a way to secure it. Should work.
