i like both Auburn and Alabama!!!!!!! LOLO. What does everyone crawl with? Right now I have a mostly stock e-maxx but it can crawl and has, I have put beadlocks with maxx mashers from proline on it. Hitec 645 steering servo in. and some cvds i like alot. also gonna do 27 turn stock motors something better than the 550 motors anyways. maybe a 55t or 45. Might ever go down to 19 turn motor just for speed. Maybe do both.

Hi, I am Joe and I live in Berry, AL. It is in Fayette county about 45 minutes from Tuscaloosa. I work in Tuscaloosa. I am getting into crawling soon! I am probably the only person in Fayette county that is into RC. Well they might be 2 more that I know of but mostly planes. I am buying an AX10 hopefully within the next couple of weeks. I havent been to any comps and dont know a whole lot about them so I am not sure if I will be getting into competing or just crawling for fun. I have been studying everything I can about crawlers so when I get it I will know a little bit on settingit up to get good performance. I have started getting a bunch of decent sized rock that I plan on building a crawling pile with in my back yard.

Hello Ty,
I have had the WK out twice and broke the steering both times. I've got to do a major fix but can probably get it going for this week-end. It's really a pretty good crawler. It exceeds my expectations.
I got rid of the stock wheels and tires and put the G-Hawgs on it with beadlocks. I put bbs in there too. Big difference.
If y'all come up here one afternoon text me. I've got family stuff and church stuff all weekend but might can slip away for a little while.
Maybe we can let Jeff and Jay know too.
Thanks for staying in touch.

I don't have any - but it looks like I have sold my 2wd race truck, so I'm that much closer to owning a crawler. I'm keeping an eye out for used stuff, but if I go new, here is my plan - please critique...
Axial ARTR
Novak Rooster Crawler combo (brushed)
1550maH 2c MaxAmps Lipo (currently in my RC18B)
Spektrum (already in hand)
Servo - ??? Gotta be low end for now.

Wow. Sounds like a very nice rig. You'll whoop the pants off my WK and me.
You might like to look at the Hitec HS 645 MG.
That's what I plan next for my WK.
The stock servo is OK but I'm told this will be a big improvement.
I'd like the other's opinions too.
rctoyguy
07-08-2008, 11:14 AM
I'm thinking that will all hit me right at $400 - which is really more than I need to think about, but I can dream.
The Axial Kit would be my 2nd choice, but it isn't much less than the ARTR, and I hear the ARTR is worth it for the tires if nothing else.
I've also considered the RTR, but I know I'd be replacing stuff right away with it - I don't care for the plastic links, etc.
Douginala
07-08-2008, 11:22 AM
When I started all this I had my heart set on the Axial but they were, and had been, out of stock forever. Furthermore, nobody had any idea when they might be available. In that light I opted for the WK and don't regret it. It was reasonably priced and the conversion has been a really fun learning experience.
Since you're seasoned in the hobby something a step up from the WK will probably be smart. That way you won't be tempted to want to trade up almost immediately.
Maybe we can go over to the church Sunday PM. I'll try to get in touch with you.

Speaking of Wheely-Kings, I want to buy another one.
I'm in tha market for a used one but might have to break down and get one new. My plan is to use the parts for a 4X4 scale off-roader.
I figure that the axles, transmission, ESC, receiver and transmitter, and servo are worth $200. I'm thinking about how to rework the shocks and even use them, or at least machine new housings and use the guts, including the o-rings. If I can salvage all that for $200 I think I'll be satisfied. And, if I can find one used it'll be even better.
I would like opinions on this project too.

Well, I sure have enjoyed mine. It's a great entry level crawler IMHO. And it's a pretty darn good crawler. It won't do what these thousand dollar rigs will but it's just fine for me.
If your buddy has any questions with the conversion I'll be more than happy to help as best I can.

do you have some good meeting places? good rock crawling spots? I'm interested, but I'd really planned on running my HPI 1/10th this Sunday at the local Hobbytown get together.

The deerfoot baptist church has the best rock formations that i have found so far in the area... if anyone has a better spot, or knows of one thats close to Bham, i'd like to know.

Hey , remember telling you about my friend that was 15, well his WK crawler needs some stuff... like motor and esc, but axles and trans are good, chassis is the widow king, but im sure he would part with it, b/c he has no money to ever put it back together.

well today me and my buddy started cleaning out this old shed thats by his house... its dirt floor but figured we would build an indoor crawler course, like shape it with dirt and pour a mixture of concrete to make it like a rock, but we still have a lot of cleaning out to do. I have a skid steer so it should make the movement of dirt go fast, we had a pretty nice 1/10th scale dirt track in another old shed, but recently tore it down. but this building is 25ft wide and about 60 long. so plenty of room to put obstacles in.

WooHoooo. I bought a crawler tonight guys. It's a Wheely King that will need work - LOL - but the basic stuff is there to build from. First off, I know it needs all new upper links, and all of the steering linkages - not sure what all else. Heck, I've looked at so many, they kind of all run together. I just bit the bullet and bought it... I found it here in the for sale area.
Have yall ever had any problems with the people at Deerfoot Baptist giving you trouble about being there? I'm just curious... I am a pretty active member of that church. Not that I have any pull or could do anything about it - I'm just curious.

I expect that we can work this out with them. I think though, that it might be wise for us to avoid going up there until I can get an appointment and discuss what's going on with the person who has authority to say yes or no.
It would not do our case any good for one of us to have a run-in with the wrong person in the meantime.

Hey Jeff,

We've pretty much decided to avoid the church for a few more days.
You can take 59-N to exit 141.
Bear right onto Chalkville Road.
Go a mile or so to Poplar Street.
Turn left to the Y intersection.
Turn right then drive past the school and look for the signs to the "Trussville Sports Complex".
Turn left and follow the main road.
Cross the stone bridge and follow your nose and the ball fields will be on your left.

Good news on Deerfoot Church
I had a very pleasant visit with Mr. David Nelson this morning and he could not have been any nicer.
He approved crawling there subject to a few (very reasonable) restrictions.
All day Sunday and after 3:00 PM Wednesday are off limits.
Don't move his rocks around.
No trash, cigarette butts, etc.
Maximum crowd of 6 or so at any one time.
Everyone should be advised that anybody without a church home is welcome to visit Deerfoot Church any time.He asked that we all make a note of his name and if questioned tell them that he approved our being there. He also will supply us with some of his business cards so that each of us can carry one with us.
I personally appreciate him giving approval and am thankful that it worked out well. It really is a great place to crawl.
Also, I appreciate everybody's cooperation while this deal was up in the air.
Thanks,

Thanks, I was happy to handle it. I'm glad that it was a success.
I, too, thought that the terms were more than reasonable. Nothing but common sense and common courtesy really.
Also, Jay, I appreciate the links. I'm going to try to get time this afternoon to digest them all.

I only live about 2-3 miles from his track and several of us go crawl at Deerfoot Baptist from time to time. Try and watch the thread (as Yukon posted below) we try and give everyone a heads up if we go some where close by to crawl so you can come and check ours out when we go. In this area there are 7 of us: 3 within a few miles and Yukon is in Trussville along with Jerry and then 2 more out around Moody/Odenville. I am sure we will meet up down the road sooner or later.

If all goes well I'm shooting for 5:30 on Thursday.
I talked with Mr. Nelson again yesterday. He was very nice as always and both he and the church are all smiles.
I've copied the "rules" below just as a reminder.
08-04-08Good news on Deerfoot Church
Thanks,
Doug

59N to Deerfoot Pkwy exit
at end of exit ramp, turn right (go back across the Interstate)
Take the first left (there is a big church sign there at the cemetery)
Follow that road straight to the church - you won't miss the rocks.
59S to Deerfoot Pkwy exit
at end of exit ramp, go basically straight across Deerfoot Pkwy.

*note - there is some road construction going on in the area, there will soon be a different entrance to the church off of a new road...
