View Full Version : Dually Tow Rig.....................Goes Prerunner/Crawler

I've been wanting to build a 2.2 rig that was more scale oriented then performance. I wanted to do something a little bigger then most scalers, 1/8 scale body, but wanted it to be a little different too. I wanted to come up with a way to run a dually rear end using TLT axles. I finally found a way to use these 24 Series touring car rims on a TLT project, and they work great for the rear axle. I mounted the first pair of wheels on the rear axle the standard way, then flipped the second pair around. Using barrel nuts from a set of wideners, you can bolt all the way through both rims. I need to make a small spacer to put between the wheels on each side, the Moabs are just a little too close together. After bolting the rear axle all together I thought it was still missing something. The center of the wheels needed a cap to look more like a real dually. I started going through the R/C scrape pile and found the caps to my 23mm wheels. It turns out they look pretty damn good.
I think I'm going to do a custom frame that runs Jugg leaf springs in the rear and 8 stock TLT shocks, 2 on each corner. The wheelbase will be about 13 3/4" to match the body. Racks, brush guards, spare tire and gas cans are all in the plan as well. I may eventually build a trailer for it too.
This build will probably be a slower one, but we'll see.

Now ya need some 1 ton looking rear fenders. Need to find a pickup body with some big flares. Didn't they make a Blackfoot body like that. I think it may have been the original Blackfoot. Cool buildup. Would the Tamiya all terain type tires fit on those wheels. The type that comes on the F-150 or S-10 kit.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it's going to look with the second set of rear tires hanging out beyond the body. But, it might look cool in a redneck kind of way.
I was thinking about trying to find a toy body that I could rob the rear fenders off.
I'm not sure if the BFG replicas will fit those rims, but they're a little too small for the 1/8 body IMO. I want it to have that 18" of lift look, kind of like a scale version of Griz's tow rig. :-P

When I bolt the 24 Series rims up to the TLT axle without the wideners, the body covers it pretty good. Which body were you thinking?

Got an old Midnight Pumpkin body you can rob the rear fenders from?
For that matter, see if you can still get a 1/6 scale Ranger cheap, for a while they were $30 with free shipping from KBToys.com. You could use the rear fenders from that as extensions.

I have thought about those tires too. The Moab's rounded profile lets them sit really close together without bunching up. The Geolander tires look cool, but they don't seat right on the rims because of the square tread profile. I'm still undecided on the tires, I may have to pick-up a set of Dirt Hawgs and try them out too.
I'd love to get that thing in the mud.
She'll be a runner, I can already see the center caps getting knocked off and lost in the rocks. I think it'll be a fun trail rig that's still fairly capable because of the extra wheel base.

If you want a dually body the pro-line f-650 has them molded on already.
I actually bought the F-650 body first, because it looks better IMO. But it looked too small as a tow rig for the CJ8 body on my comp 2.2 rig. This body is quite a bit bigger then the F-650 body.
BENDER
12-24-2005, 08:12 PM
I snapped a few pics of the F-150 body with the CJ8 in tow for size comparison.
I dyed the rims black, because the chrome doesn't really cover the back of the rim. I bought another set of 24 Series rims and the chrome covers the back on the new set pretty good. So now I'm not sure which way to go, I may end up sandblasting the wheels and spraying them flat black.

The hex is the same size, so they bolt right up. But, you'll need a widener of some sort, otherwise the tires will rub the links and shocks.

I did try them on the 24 Series wheels, but the ID on the tires is a little too big. I could make them work if I spun up some adapter rings for the wheels.

Looking at the pics it would take some work to mak them fit but then again, F-150s dont come dually
From the body line above the wheel well out to the widest point is about .86 inches
The bulged portion of the fender is about 7.5 inches long
From the upper body line to the bottom of the rocker panel is 3.6 inches

Yeah, I do have some stock Clod and TXT wheels. I'll have to take a look at them to see if it'll work.
Slugz, I think that would look cool. But, it is alot longer then the bed on this body. I also agree that it probably would be a PITA to graft the 2 bodies together. I'll have to see if I can find one of those bodys.

I'll probably just run a 65t lathe motor at first, and see from there. I may got to a 45t to get a little wheelspeed, it all depends on the final running weight when I'm done. I want to do a winch in front too, so I'll probably use one of my SR's for the esc.

I'm going with single Moabs for sure, it looks the best with the longer 14" wheelbase.
A little more progress, figured out where to mount my D-rings. Stole the tow rope of the LAV, stretched the wheelbase a little to get the bigger Moab tires out of the rock rails. I also started mocking up a front bumper, by recycling the old SW2 stinger. I'm not really sure what the finished bumpers will look like yet.

Looks good B. The rear bumper looks kinda like the one on your jeep, just needs the pressure gauge & coupler. Where's the D-ring from? Toyo?
I think its starting to look like a chase truck.

Thanks Sheldon.
The rear bumper does look the same as the one I made for the Jeep. It's clean looking, but a little plain. I'm going to work on designing something around it. The D-rings are from toyofast. This rig does have a baja look to it, especially after I cut the body, so I'm going with it. It'll probably end up being a tow rig/chase rig/rock crawler/rock racer all in one.

It's alive and running. I also got a little more detail work done. I picked up an RPM front bumper that was designed for the Maxx. I cut the front of it to be the fairlead for the winch. Scored a set of stainless D-rings from the hardware store. Made a matching rear skid plate. I cut the spare tire and wheel in half, like rbgerrish did on the Courier, it was sticking up way too high for me before. Next step will be complete teardown and paint.

Thanks for the compliments Griz. I wanted to try a frame mounted steering servo, but not sure there will be room with the winch installed. So, I stuck it on the axle like my comp rig, and decided to try and hide it with the skid. I'm going to paint the frame and link mounts black, and may go bright red with the skid plates to hide the servo/link mounts even more.

I probably will do a little more with the rear bumper, such as light guards. I may scrap this bumper and make one that wraps around the rear fenders more too. I've thought about adding another rail on top of the existing rock rails. But, it won't look that scale because technically it would block the doors more then they already are.

The straps in the pics I just posted are flat shoelaces. The ones I originally had on the front are on the rear now, they were made from an old snowboard leash. After I cut the shoelaces to length, I burn the frayed ends a little with a lighter. The laces have a little stretch to them, but the snowboard leash doesn't stretch at all. That's why they got moved to the back. All 4 straps are functional now too.
I'm still not sure what I'll do with the shocks. The diameter of the shocks works pretty good with the 1/8th scale body. I see no end in sight at this point.

Thanks. I did use the stock Hitec servo horns, with long plastic screws connecting the two. I also put fuel line on all the screws, between the horns. I'm hoping that stops the string from fraying over time. The winch will pick the truck up off the ground, and it's got to be in the 7-8 pound range now. I have to give Grizz credit for the winch servo, he modified it for me because I'm electronically handicapped. ;-)

The top of the snorkel is a scrap piece of Delrin I had laying around. The sticker on it is from one of my HPI bug body decal sheets. The tubing going into the body is protective coating for electrical wires. I have a 1/4" diameter aluminum standoff that goes through the center of the tubing to make it rigid. One long M3 screw holds it all together and ties it to the body.

Thanks man, I'll let you know if I decide to add any lights. ;-)
Just something about this truck makes me want to build another ''comp'' scale rig :)
P.S. did you notice any amount of difference with the weights on the diffs?
Thanks for the compliment. I don't really notice the weight on the axles with this rig, I'm going to pull those off when I start painting everything. The front axle is out of one of my old comp rigs, I just never pullled the weight off.
Lookin sweet Bender!
Sparky's came out sick as well!"thumbsup" I like the winching of the 650 w/ a 150 pic:lol::lol::lol:
Thanks, ya these 2 rigs together don't quite look right, as far as the scale appearance goes.

Found a couple cool things at the local hardware store. I wanted a hook for the winch, so I fabbed one out of some small chain link. Also spotted a small pulley that turned out to be a cool functioning snatch block, after cutting a slot in the side for the cable.

Thanks again for the compliments guys. 8-)

The dually set-up didn't quite look right without the body to match, so it got ditched in favor of the current set-up.

The add ons are done, she's pretty hefty now too. Only thing left to do is tear it down and paint the frame, link mounts and skid plates. I've already got a little rust starting from the snow and water crossings.

Thanks Jason. I made the plow using thin flat aluminum stock, that I formed around some big round stock. The plow is basically 4 linked and tied to the front axle using leftover Maxx turnbuckles, and TLT suspension stays. I use the winch to lift the plow, but I can't angle it until I figure out a better mounting set-up.

I got the front D-rings from toyofast and RCRockGear. I'm not sure if they are still available though. The rear stainless steel D-rings I found at a local hardware store.
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23725&highlight=%2Ad-ring%2A
The chassis came from www.rc-fab.com But, I don't think they are available anymore either.
The rack, Hi-lift jack and rock rings came from Unimoger and www.montanascaledesigns.com
The G-made wheel wideners came from Kevin at www.thecrawlerstore.com
The Pede tranny came from rockpiledriver at www.rcpcrawlers.com
I'm running TLT axles, Integy 65t motor, Super Rooster, Hitec 645mg steering servo, 645mg winch servo, Savage bumpers, 2.2 Moabs, 24 Series touring car wheels from Pro-Line, stock TLT shocks, Maxx 2.5 driveshafts and DX3 radio gear. This build has been in the works off and on for about a year. Everything else was fabbed by me. I'm not sure about the overall cost, I've never added it up. I bought as much as I could from the Vendors here on RCC. ;-) "thumbsup"

Check Home Depot for the D-rings, that's where I got mine.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to help you fab parts. I'm also a Vendor here on RCC and that keeps me busy for the most part. What little time I have left is spent wrenching on my junk. Most of the parts on this rig are hand fabbed by me, which is time consuming. ;-)

That I can help you with. ;-)
The skid plates are bent and tie through the frame along with the D-ring mounts. I cut into them on both sides with a bandsaw to make bending it by hand alot easier.
