Nice. But I still think that body would look better without the poop scoop on the hood.

It'll most likely be powered by a Novak brushless...if I decide to yank it out of the FM1-E.

Nice. But I still think that body would look better without the poop scoop on the hood.

Agreed!

I thought about doing something similiar but was thinking about using a maxx diff on the front with drive shafts and attaching a disc brake (from a t maxx possibly) to the output shaft on the diff and using a servo to lock up that disc/diff similiar to line locking so I can light the tires up

Frakk,
This will be something to drive around in the street and make a few runs against the local guys with thier "Nitro is better than electric" cars. ;) Not a dedicated, full-on drag car, but just something fun to goof around with.

The chassis is from the HPI Super RS4
Rear suspension is made of narrowed parts from a HPI RS4 Mini
Front suspension is mostly from the RS4 Sport (and still needs to be narrowed)

The rear suspension will be locked solid and I'll be using a 71 tooth belt from the Pro 3 instead of the standard 54 tooth rear belt. This is so I can move the 2-speed farther forward and clear the tires.

Oh yeah, there's also an electric 2-speed going in.

rindean,

I'm just using the Super RS4 chassis. Didn't want to drop a ton of cash on this so I'm just using what I have available. What I don't have I'm making. ;)

How fast do you think it'll go?

JasonInAugusta
01-25-2006, 08:41 AM
Not sure. I'll have to put the GPS on it when I'm done to find out.

...and no, I won't be taking it off any sweet jumps.

This thing is sweet, in my opinion I would go with a really low turn motor and and a novak h8-28 ESC (I think thats the model name). It can handle anything from 8 to 28 cells, or maybe a tekin 420g2. I have learned that in clod buster drag racing that typically in a short distance the brushed motors spool up much faster then the burshless motors. Just a couple of weeks ago at the Monster Bash in PA, I was watching my friend Brians clod buster called "Dragula" raced a brushless emaxx, and his truck was killing it. He ran a 10 cell matched pack and 7 turn motors on a cyclone  trucks is rediculous fast.

If you are going long distances then go brushless but if you are going scale down 1/4 miles go brushed

Mike

BTW the 2 speed sounds SWEET

JasonInAugusta
01-25-2006, 09:18 AM
I've got a 6 single here but don't want to use it in this car. Want it to be driveable.

This isn't intended to be a full-on drag car, just something that will be quick enough to hurt the feelings of the local nitro guys. I used to race RC Drag cars years ago but got out of it. So much money to spend for a 3 second run.

Here's the 2-speed. :flipoff:

Jason, How many cells do you plan on using?

JasonInAugusta
01-25-2006, 10:13 AM
HOLY ****!

Just crunched numbers on this.

The Novak 5800 setup will handle up to 7 cells at 1.2V per cell. The motor spins at 5800RPM per volt.

After crunching the numbers here's what I get.

1st gear ratio: 4:1
2nd gear ratio: 2.6:1

Tire diameter: 3.4"
Tire circumference: 10.7"

Motor RPM @ 8.4V: 48720

So, after doing the math:

Max speed if in 1st gear: 64MPH

Top speed: 98.7MPH

Of course this is all in theory. Wind resistance will make the top speed a good bit lower, but still...not bad for a pile of junk that was laying around.

Rockpiledriver
01-25-2006, 10:45 AM
Sounds interesting. Can't wait to see how it works out especially with the 2 speed.

With that kind of power you might want to go with foam tires. I doubt the rubber will be able to hook up.

Charger body for the Savage and a handful of HPI parts.

http://projecttwin.com/files/2.jpg Very nice, my drool bucket is full. You may find the nitros are running quicker than when you left drag racing. 1.60's for diggers and 1.9's for full bodied cars. I've got a project going with a ntc3, 2 wheel drive, 2 speed. I think the record is held by electric. What wheels and tires are those? I'm using a 37 Chevy pro mod body and your wheel/tire combe would look killer.

JasonInAugusta
01-25-2006, 12:18 PM
I won't be running against nitro drag cars, just the touring cars that the locals think are fast. ;)

Rear wheels are Torkerz (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEV84&P=7
) with Pro-Line Striker IIs (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDT97&P=ML
)

The Torkerz are a pin drive, not a hex.

Fronts are narrow 1.9" HPIs (I think they're discontinued) with these tires (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXM977&P=7).

Sweet. I made a pan car/dragster but lost interest as soon as I finished it.

It has a custom G10 chassis, no suspension, solid axle rear, direct drive, 32p gears, buggy rear tires and sedan front tires

Heres my axle, maybe it will give you some ideas
http://www2.mini-zracer.com/albums/Maxxcrazy/DSCF0207.jpg
It spins on 1/4x5/8 bearings and uses 1/4-20 wheel nuts. That is a T Maxx spur bolted directly to the shaft

im not positive but i think the lhs has a set or two of those front rims in the bargin bin, if you want ill take a look and see if you want me to.

I thought you were using Duratrax Street Trac tires, those could be an inexpensive alternative.

RD400
01-25-2006, 06:09 PM
JIA, be careful with that 2 speed, the clutch finger for 2nd gear will rip the pin right out. I did it in my HPI three times. Thier 2 speed can only handle down to about a 12 turn motor;-)

That is the two speed for the electric TC?

JasonInAugusta
01-25-2006, 06:40 PM
Yup, the electric version.

RD400
01-25-2006, 06:51 PM
Good luck, if those rear tires hook up well it will eat the 2 speed. Tires that big should have a heck of a lot more traction than my little TC tires. If you need extra parts for the 2 speed, I got them.

JasonInAugusta
01-25-2006, 07:18 PM

I kinda thought I'd be pushing the limits of the 48P gears.

We'll see.

nice job, that hpi chassis should be pretty stable, i like how the wheels are tucked in the fenders too.

i did mine on a pan car chassis

http://pic17.picturetrail.com/VOL856/887480/7799029/102793841.jpg

motor is a 15 turn just to get it to move. i built it for the fast and furious thing i've got going on (have the supra, eclipse, skyline, and rx-7)

a better shot, body needs to be lowered a bit tho

http://pic17.picturetrail.com/VOL856/887480/7799029/102793853.jpg

this is the real drag vehicle (besides my new era rail)

http://pic17.picturetrail.com/VOL856/887480/7799029/102793856.jpg

chassis is 10l4, motor is 6 turn cobalt, novak 828, and anything from 8 cells up... rc car action did almost the same car, but used a 12 turn and 8 cells, their radar'ed top speed was 64 mph.. i think i should beat that.. :) although it's got to punch a big hole through the air w/ the truck body..

The color though. Do you have anything in mind?
Single color, or something more graphically intense?

Did some research...

Thought the front wheels were 21mm...they're 22mm and still in production.

Tower has them in white and chrome flavors.

In other news...found an old body laying around at the LHS.

I thought it'd be cool for another drag car, but I just had to size it up on this one.

http://projecttwin.com/files/32Ford/322.jpg

http://projecttwin.com/files/32Ford/323.jpg

That's the Parma 5-window body.

Now I'm stuck choosing which to use.

If I use the Parma body I'll end up doing sheet metal work for the firewall, have to build a Hemi, etc...

Maybe I'll just use the old Nitro RS4 2 that's in the closet for another build.

Got Rocks?

Will probably end up with two sets of wheels/tires as well.

Haha! Nice, Super's are friggin awesome. Too bad they discontinued them. By the way, I'd just ditch the two speed. My brother put one of those in his rs4 rally and it was crap.

sorry i took so long they have them but there 10 bucks a pair, and jason said they have them on tower so that would probbbly be cheaper, and i dont like my LHS so if i cant avoid supporting them than i will.
