After floating around here for awhile now Ive decided that its time to pay my dues and add my own build up thread. I cant help but admire Brandos skills and the speed that he can build a truck. Or looking at rckjeeps truggy with as lustful eye. So here is my own creation....
By the way the etch a scetch is only a prop for the pictures. Ill be using my own frame, HPI jeep body, TLT axles and a pede tranny. I am looking to go for a scale crawler that has a few ideas that I have not seen done yet to make it a maor capible trail rig. Comment are always welcome!!

Yea, you should leave it like that. Put a tube around the windshield, or maybe a little bit behind it. That would look helllla dank! Then make some tube fenders, or outline the fenders in tube, I think that is a really nice detail. You definetly should leave the body just the windshield though.

made a little progresse tonight. I added the rock rails, they also help hold the body in place and I started the main hoop for the family roll cage to be welded to. Went down to Earls (lhs) and picked up some moabs and a TLT.

Got most of the tubing work done this weekend. The tranny is in and the axles are built ready to intstall. I was able to fab a faux roller fairlead on the front bumper to pass my winch cable through. Has anybody tried to put on hydrolic bump stops? I might try to build some with mini-t shocks. I hope to have it running by the end of this week.

I was able to get the axles mounted and the WHEELS on! The wheels are from RC4WD.COM and I have to say they are worth every pennie, or dollars. The fit and finish is perfect. Im not a big fan of the red rings but I,ll see how they look after the jeep gets a little color. Im going to get a few more brackets welded on to hold the battery, figure out how to keep the body on, then its time to strip it and go the the paint. I can feel my blood boil now!!

great work Crawldaddy, any close up pics of how you did your fairlead? I just built mine, but it doesn't look as nice as yours, what did your use to make it? brake line?

crawldaddy
02-13-2006, 09:24 PM
Here are a few pictures of the fairlead. I used a hook off of a peg board for the rollers and 1/8 " steel for the back plate. I welded the rollers to the plate. My LHS says that they have some chrome paint for models that I can use on the rollers after the frame is painted. I put the stickers on the winch since this is a donner body to see how it would look. Im going to paint the frame and cage black. Any suggestions on body paint color? The body will be trimed out just like the doner. I was thinking candy green but wonder if it will look like Santas jeep with the red rings on the wheels.

Mr. longtravel
02-14-2006, 04:16 PM
i think those red rock rings are cool looking. if i had the money, i would buy them. i think you should paint the body silver with those red rock rings, that would be cool.

crawldaddy
02-18-2006, 06:54 AM
I was able to get things painted up. Im not sure if I like the red rings on the bead lock so I might strip the ano off. Now its time to start building this up.

Looking good, as for the bead locks. You could have them powder coated the same color as the body or a nice contrasting (check a color wheel at a hardware or paint store). And powder coating will hold up pretty good under use. Keep the pics coming.

I dont remember what the proper name is for the color but I did get it at Checker Auto. Its kind of a rusty orange. Im stripping the ano off the bead lock rings right now and painting the bolts gold. That way it will look like the rings are held on with grade 8 bolts.

She's a roling chassis now! Ive got the axles mounted, links done, and all but one bead lock and tire done. One of the proline moabs has a bead that is to big for any 2.2 rim. I'm waitng for Earls (LHS) to get in a replacment. I stripped off the ano on 4 rings so that I could go back to red if I wanted to, but I am very happy with the polished rings and gold bolts. Now all that I need to do is get drive lines on, and some electonics in this. Then its time to go turn up some snow!

Thanks for the compliments! The cage is made of 1/8 inch solid steel. I feel like it looks alittle more to scale. As for strength, its plenty strong. I can stand on this cage. These trucks dont weight much so they dont need to be super burly tubing.

What kind of paint did you use? Rattle can? Does it hold up?

crawldaddy
02-20-2006, 07:35 AM
Its just a rattle can. I messed up on the paint so this time I painted the outside of the body. I'll get it right next time. I used this same color on another build and I still see it around here now and then. It looks like its holding up fine for 1badjeepbruiser. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16182&highlight=scored

Thanks for all the compliments! Today was a great day, I was able to wrap everything up and finish the jeep. The only thing not done is a servo winch behind the bumper. Im going to run the line through the fairlead on the front bumper. Here a few poser shots before I take it out and get dirty.

No interier here. It would look more scale but I want it to crawl well. Now that I have ran my 1st battery through it I found a few little issues that need attention. It handles great, and crawles really well for an 8lb jeep. I guess I forgot to lock my front locked axle, whoops. It side hills a lot better than I thought it would for being narrow. I have a light sway bar an the rear that works wonders! I also had to trim the fenders more for the tires to clear. 2nd battery is charged, need to go play....

I've been able to whale on old sleepy and I have to say its a good time. I've found a few short comings so far. She's heavy(8 lbs) and likes to eat batteries alive with the titanium geared servo. I switched it out to a standard servo that helped with run times but its a little weak for me. I ended up getting a new fuel tank. Its an Orion 4800 mah lipo. Its awsome! I can drive this for about 2 hours and I get better wheel speed with the small pinion that I had to put on this pig. The rock sliders work awsome. I chopped of the fenders and am adding tube fenders to the front. Ill get some pics on the rocks as soon as I get it done.

Im trying to get old sleepy ready for the Montana comp so a few changes were in order. I never really like the cage so I re-did it in 3/16 brake line. I'm alot happier with it now. I also added a little bit of scale...a rear view mirror. I also worked on getting this fat pig to loose some weight. I chopped off a full pound. Ill post more pics as I get it finished.

The new cage looks a lot sleeker. Nice work!

fullmodtxt
06-04-2006, 01:06 PM
I agree, the new cage is much better looking. 3/16 tube works out to about 1-3/4 tube in 1/10 scale, or roughly 1-1/2 in 1/8. That works out to what the major structural parts of a real cage would be.
