View Full Version : New scale trail rig...

thaclodking
04-10-2006, 10:22 PM
Finally getting around to building a scale rig to go with the 4runner (another future project). Went with a Bruiser body so the scale will be close to the 4runner. Alot of similarity to rbgerrish's courier on the frame, but I decided that I had to have a steel bumper with a roller fairlead. Although it doesn't function, it still looks halfway decent. The bumper is made from 22g sheet steel cut to shape and welded. It is stout.

Got the body off ebay(where else?) from 3 different auctions and cleaned it up. Cut off the bed cap, and painted it with Tamiya TS-52 pearl green.

Plans include an exo around the cab and along the bed, a canvas topper for the bed, winches front and rear and lights for midnight runs. All electronics are waterproofed as are the batteries.

I hear ya! My built times are normaly measured in months, I threw this together in a total of about 14 hours. Most of that time was spent on prep/paint and scrounging for parts. I will have it ready by this weekend!!!!

Jay, that looks awesome! I love the color, I may have to steal that idea for my toyota trail rig. If you need help with the cann-back let me know, I can steer ya in the right direction. Also, if you do a cann-back a MSD roof rack pkg would look awesome on it. ;-) hint hint. maybe even some MSD bead rings too, look at the bruiser on our vendor page, it looks awesome too!

Thanks, I definitely want to get a set of rings for it, might take a while to spring for a rack though (back in school, tired of turning wrenches!). Heading down to the shop now and trying to get it done for this weekend.

Looking at how you have the exo done there. You could braze a small 3mm bolt through the side step. Then you could drill a hole in the exo and put it over the bolt. Ansd use body pins to hold it all on.

Hope that makes sence.

Well I am stuck on the Tamiya paint, so when I looked through the rack I chose the most abnoxious color they offered. It was that or the circus pink...

Got the back half of the exo done for the most part. The camera is in Texas right now so when it comes back I will post some pics!

The only thing about the cage that I don't like is the top bar across the back, the tailgate won't open! So that will be cut out. Then it's on to the skidplate and possibly wheel wells. After that I will start work on the canvas topper.

Also planned is an aluminum dash, the interior looks too plain. Still on the lookout for a driver figure from a Brat.

Anyone know of any companies that convert air radios to ground use? There was a shop in town that did it for me years ago but it has since dissappeared. I have an Airtronics X-347 radio that I want to use with this.

Got the front winch done. I converted an old JR 517 servo I had lying around. I machined the drum from 1" brass rod and wound it with ten feet of 50lb Spiderwire fishing line. Its got just enough grunt to lift the truck off the ground.

Also removed everything from the chassis but the axles and gave everything a shot of flat black. while apart I took the opportunity to narrow the outside of the wheels.

panaosonic
04-19-2006, 06:02 PM
I like the way you mount steering servo!!!!
can't see the servo from top! looks very scale

How strong is the fishing line??

thaclodking
04-19-2006, 06:42 PM
50 pound test. This rig will probably weigh in at around 11 pounds so its got plenty of strengh.

panaosonic

50!!!! wow very strong!!!! maybe I am going to use that.

thaclodking
04-19-2006, 07:15 PM
OK, finally got a semi-decent picture of the winch hook. Started with some 5/32" music wire that I heated and bent into a "U" shape. I then tried to heat and flatten one end, but when that didn't work I spot welded the end until I built a ball. Then I ground it to shape and drilled the hole. It came out pretty good.

Thanks Bro! Although my wife will argue the fact, I ran out of gas so progress was halted. Got to the store today and picked up some more so I can continue with the can-back frame.

I picked up some more rims at the LHS, enough for the 4runner and a spare for both rigs. Tires are ordered so when they come in I will get the spare mounted in the bed. I actually built a shovel from steel scrap that looks fairly decent that will also get mounted.

I didn't get much done today (had to work on the Taurass), but I will get some progress pics up tommorrow.

It's a bruiser body. If you want one get ready to dig deep into the wallet, as one in halfassed shape will run you about $100. You can find them new also, but be ready to spend about $500-600.

I re-worked the Can-back frame, I will get pics posted tonight.

The body I used was pretty ragged, I took alot of time and fixed it back up. Total I have in this body is about $100. I could have saved much effort by getting a better body to start with but this truck was built to be driven through hell. I thoght it best to leave the better bodies for guys doing restorations. I have a couple of original three speed trucks and couldn't live with myself if I destroyed a nice body.

thaclodking
05-01-2006, 07:03 PM
