got the chassis plates cut and drilled. i designed the pattern in autocad(being a architect i tend to over do things for the sake of precision) its 1/4" acrylic, this is my first "plastic" chassis so well see how it holds up. i think it will do just fine with the way is supported by the aluminum...
and cut the shock mount, body mount, chassis mount rails to length.

chassis upside down, ie table = bottom of jeep body...

o well when the projects finished i think they'll add to the realism.

any way. got the rails drilled and mounted (yeah i work slow, helps the time pass :D )

axles and links mounted. next up shock mounts (origonal plan was to bolt them to the angle aluminum, but as you can see there way too long :-( ) i tryed my RS4 shocks (2.5") and they were perfect, but only had .5" of travel...not gonna cut it.
also got my jerry can painted up (in the background)

got the shocks all mounted. and got my adjustable motor plates at lunch! ill be mobile tonight! thinking of choping off 1.5" of the black chassis plates adn raisingn the lower link mounts the same 1.5" to make it look more scale with the body one. so they dont hang so low.... what do you guys think? also in the works with diaz are scale chassis rails for it...(ditching everything you see here minus axles and links)

i finally got the rear shocks and mounts stuffed under the rear seat.....

STANG KILLA SS
06-22-2006, 04:45 PM
well made a MAJOR improvement tonight, decided to hack off 1.5" of the chassis plates, and raise the lower links the same 1.5" drew it up in CAD, made me a pattern, tore the chassis apart, transfered the pattern, drilled the holes, cut the parts off, and reassembled. made a HUGE difference. looks MUCH more realistic. plus i gained 1.5" of ground clearance, shed some weight, and didnt raise my CG at all. woot!
(just realized from the pics it looks like the body raised too. it did NOT. just swung the links upward and hacked off the extra, the body and chassis rails are sitting at the exact same height)

STANG KILLA SS
06-26-2006, 12:33 PM
i know i know im like hated in this forum, but i like to be different :D thanks for the props, means alot coming from you...

well im fixing to tear into my "new" axles, to figure what the grinding noise is, i took the rear (loudest) axle off the chassis at lunch, once i had the motor off it i could see white powder/chunks inside the casing, ie probly the gears ground to hell (although the spur apears to be perfect) so ill tear into the cases after work and find out what the problem is...

STANG KILLA SS
06-28-2006, 11:23 AM
well got her all fixed up. took the "rails" out for a test run. everything worked good. exept the springs are WAAAAY too stiff. they dont allow the axles to move hardly at all. and all my assosiated springs wont fits these MAXX shocks. and this OOOOOLD *** futaba esc its just not gonna work, its just isnt sensetive enough, not enough throttle position sensativity. it jumps from like non to way too fast, with no incriments inbetween. and it gets REEEALLY hot. but the springs/shocks are the first thing that needs attention...

plenty of center clearance...
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/4448/test12rl.jpg

this is one of the FEW times the chassis actually articulated, most of the time the stiff springs kept the axles perfectly perpidecular to the chassis...
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/8834/test29kb.jpg

thats a 14" tall "wall" without touching the links...

Got Rocks?
06-28-2006, 11:25 AM
maybe the weight of the body will help;-)

STANG KILLA SS
06-28-2006, 11:37 AM
tryed it, even that big heavy body doenst even phase those chuck wagon springs lol. the springs are SUPER heavy, and i took a spring off (too see if the assosiated springs would fit) and even with no spacers, the springs have about 1/2" of preload :( so that aint helping.

STANG KILLA SS
08-16-2006, 11:48 AM
FINALLY finished it!!!
switched to assosiated springs and cups, and added a brace up front to keep the rails from flexing like a torsion chassis. came out good. flex is ok for a scale rig...

the magazine shot :D

we never get ice/snow here and i had a few minutes on my lunch break so i grabed the jeep and the camera and headed across the street. most of it has melted but thing really impressed me on the ice! it could go alot of places i couldnt. inclines etc. and climbed pretty well on the few rocks seeing as they were covered in ice. i dont think the battery and motors liked the cold though. i cant feel my face or hands right now lol, but was fun. a rare ice wheeling chance here in texas, just wish there was more rocks close by the house.

that is one SERIOUSLY awesome rig - i usually done like to see credit for "premade" bodies, but you outfitted it well, the driver, accesories, and setup of the chassis make it very scale.

great job!

Gotta say this clod build never ceases to amaze me, it's almost....scale:),
just love it, i have a h2 body i been meaning to build on a set of brand new clod axles that been sitting around for over 6 months already, i should get to it sometime this year:roll: , gotta finish my other 4 unfinished builds first:lol:

not crazy scale, but kinda fun. i also cut off the fake plasic bumper lights, and put some billet ram lights on.
damn aluminum diamond plate was $36  . for the hitch i just put some fuel tubing around a 4-40 screw, allows the trailer to flex about 45*
i made the deck a perfect fit for a TLT rig to fit on it. found the 1/6 raptor at walmart, its RC too ;) even has a little rider with helmet/gear etc.

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/7730/trailer25ud6.jpg
http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/8013/trailer3hd5.jpg

the axle housing is just 1/4" brake line, the axle is 10-24 all thread. made the wheel adapter by taking 10mm nuts drilling them out to 1/4, and sliding them over another peice of 1/4 brake line, and braising them on. works great :D

took the jeep out to last weekends TXRCRCA scale run. my giant rig ended up being the camera vehicle, but at the end we took it off and i got a nice river crossing in. about 11" deep and good 25 feet across. made it all the way unassisted, in some of the really deep spots where the water was over the hood, the 20+ pound truck floated alittle bit:shock:

let's just hope that Big Joe's scale doesn't get out of hand at the next comp with AustinCrawls 1.9 Lara Croft

have you limited the flex on that thing or did you convert it ot that comp looking rig ? ? ?

STANG KILLA SS
06-05-2007, 08:11 PM
naa big joe is on the back burner, spending all my time (and $$$) on 1.9s

yeah i need some limiting straps for her bad. it has always been my intentions that once i reach the scale limits of this "street look" that i will tear it down and make it a comp looking rig, tube fenders, cage, stinger, sponsor decals, maybe even removed or hacked doors and a dovetail. and angling in half of the door/fenders would look wicked too, like the 1:1s

Hey STANGKILLA SS.., Whats up dude..? I just read thru this whole thread, and I was AMAZED at how scale and realistic your Jeep build came out.. Sweet job man..! And THEN I read about how it went on the backburner for a 1.9 tuber, and how you eventually wanted to build or re-build joe into a 1:6 scale comp style tube buggy, like a Poison Spyder "Bruiser"..., Well, It just so happens that before I built my blue Poison Spyder "Bruiser" TLT.., I actually did just that..!! Its still not done yet.., actually its sitting downstairs on a shelf with about 1/2" of dust on it right now..!!
