OK....

When I was a little boy about yey high I thought to myself...... Wait you ment on the rig?

Well I had the clod axles laying around the house since December. Thought about selling them, but never could get myself to do so.

So now I have a project I think you'll like.

It will have..
the axles and lathes of caurse.
I have a tq3 and a 4 channel, but I haven't decided on which one yet. I still need to get the 4 channel operational.
It will have a 1:6 scale body on it. So I'm kinda going for a scale look. (There were two on ebay the other day. Ford looking)
It will have a Ladder frame. Which I'll work on tonight. :)
Still working on the suspension set up.
I need to get some maxx adapters or figure something out. I have some wideners I got from RBL a while back to trade. I'll post in the wanted section.

I have moab XL's and 2 sets of 1:6 nylint wheels so I'm going to see what I can come up with. If I can't trade for the maxx adapters then nylints will be on it.

OK I've given more than I wanted to allready.. Man I just can't keep a project secret..

jason

So basically you've got nothing but a set of clod axles and some dreams?

Double J
09-14-2006, 10:49 AM
No Dreams.. It is REality.. My reality.. Do you want in?

Edit: I have everything...except the maxx adapters. Just need to put it togeather, and brace the chassis

When I'm done the chassis will be under a pound easily. I'm using a speacial top secret metal that is light. Right now the two rails weigh about 2 or 5 oz. But I will weight it when I get home and let you all know.

Double J
09-20-2006, 02:18 PM
I'm wanting to promote 4 seasons RC so I need to talk to the owner today and see what we can come up with. This guy is supper nice and helps me out a bunch. He has an outdoor road track, Indoor offroad track and the little crawler course. But he doesn't get much business cause of bad location and NO advertising. He has been there since or before I moved to Olympia in 99.

SOOOO I say this because I want to have kinda a big GTG and get some on lookers to come also. I have to plan for it and see about a few small giveaways or something to kinda get people into the location. And not just Rock Crawling. So what I'm wanting to do is kinda have all three going at once or something. I'll work out details and bounce some ideas off the RCC board.

The leafs are homemade from a lawnmower retrun spring. I was going to use the stuff I found at harbor frieght but they didn't have a 1/4" wide available. The pics shows it supporting the body with no problem and the electronics really won't weight that much, except the battery but that's not to bad. I'll weigh it at lunch with just the frame, axles and wheels. It really isn't to heavy at this point. Once I add the shocks it will support just about anything.

I wanted to use really long shocks but it lifted it way to high so I'm going with the Tmaxx shocks I have.

I'll get the cage tacked on at lunch and snap a pic or two.

Here is what I did at lunch yesterday. It's a quick cage nothing fancy and I didn't even fish mount the corners (cause of time) like I would do for customers. So it only took a total of 15minutes.

The truck may look like it's slanting, but it's cause the shackles move and I don't have the shocks on yet.

At lunch I'll mount the bed and set up the shocks. Maybe get a couple of flex shots.

I'm debating on what type of shocks to put on it. I have some really long shocks (savage? or something, can't think of what they are off of at the moment) and can make hoops for em or just go with the maxx or evader rear shocks?

Google True Fire or Real Fire. There are kits, DVD's, Stencils and a few different versions. Find the one by the guy from Overhaulin or also seen on Rides and all. I think his website is Killer paint or Killer graphics, He is located in WA. I have to deal with some kids right now or I'd find it for you.

Well Double J, for shocks I dont think you would need anything longer than a Maxx sized shock, The leaves will pretty much only move so far. True fire would be a wicked addition to the paint scheme, but I think something more traditional would fit the rig better. Maybe solid black with red accents, something that screams I'm going to eat you.

I left the springs on because I ran out of material to add extra leafs so it gives it a little more support. I went through a bunch of material for the leafs to get it right. Trial and error i guess......... Coil overs. :)
And I'm not really loosing that much articulation.

as for the moabs I agree but I'll see when I have the rims and their mounted. I'll also narrow the rims. So far I'm liking the nylints. and they flexed allright. I also want this to be able to crawl somewhat. So well see how they handle.

the cage is more of a function so I can mount the body on. That why it's not that braced up (but my 4 yr old rolled it of the table and it's about 4ft high and nothing happened to it as you can tell). I also don't think it looks that great. not my best work. I could make it look better. But I have to many other tubers to build right now so that's all the attention the cage will get, and I have to save the material for the customers:).

Good idea though.

I guess since I didn't make it to the PC I can work on the bumpers this weekend after I get it rolling under it's own power.
I have some nice 9 t pinions from Kevinlongisland as well as some motor mounts (should be here today or sat.). The moped (not the green one) a TQ3 and mod it to rear stear. I'll save the 4 channel for another something I'm working on soon.

Now what kind of bumpers. HMMMMM Big and bold, nice and slick or mean as hell.?? so many decisions to make and you all don't help out much do you. :)

When I'm done the chassis will be under a pound easily. I'm using a speacial top secret metal that is light. Right now the two rails weigh about 2 or 5 oz. But I will weight it when I get home and let you all know. It's not going to be to heavy as I'm planning on being able to crawl this bad boy.

Ok I just went and put her on the scale. I didn't have the body on it. Just the axles, wheel, motors, servos basically a roller w/o electronics.

I came in at 7 - 7.5 lbs. I think I'm doing good for a 19" WB SCALE clod.

I think when I'm done and a body on it will be around 9 - 10 lbs.

If you look at the servo it has a TLT output shaft on it with part of a dog bone on it. It allows it to move up & down, front to back and in a circle.

I'll get better pics tonight so you can see it better. I'll take one compressed and fully extended as well as a flex shot.

I'm thinking of doing the rear normal (on the axle), since it wouldn't really be seen on a 1:1 anyway, not that you'd see the steering on a 1:1 either.

Here is how it sits at the moment. I went with 4, 4" shocks in the rear for helping with the trailer when there is a load on it. I'm going to make it a cotter pin set up (instead of nuts, maybe) so I can take out the shocks when I want to crawl, same with the front. 4 of the long shocks in the front for looks. Just wish they were all the same color. oh well I'll work with what I have.

Detailed pics of the steering system as well.

Double J
10-10-2006, 01:36 PM
I don't have a pic but will take one for tomorrow.
But to explain.
I used 3/16" brake line for the rod, Cut the TLT dog bones in half and brazed it to the 3/16". CA glued the TLT output shaft to the servo horn.
ON the lower part I brazed a cut piece of washer (about an 1/8" thick) drilled a 1/8" hole on the end, ground it down to look nice and neet. used a couple lock washers brazed to the brake line, plus a cupped thing (black deal in the pic) and a washer to keep it from sliding out. It moves well. I just need to "real world" test it. I'm hoping soon. I have the rear just about ready to put on made the part to hold the servo on to the axles since I can't use the stock brace that comes on the axles. Maybe by this weekend. After I get all the other projects to a decent speed I'll start on the Trailer.

It will be for sale as a RTR w/ a Big *** goose neck. $850 for both. I need to get my 1:1 up and pay some bills off. If you get it now you can choose the PC color for the frame. I'm going for a true fire paint job on the truck. so the frame was going to be red or black.

With out the body. I came in at 7 - 7.5 lbs. I think I'm doing good for a 19" WB SCALE clod.

I think when I'm done and a body on it will be around 9 - 10 lbs.

Most Scale rigs are a bit top heavy. considering how big this is I think I'm doing pretty well for balancing the weight out.

Reminds me I need to see how tall it sites with the body on.

Double J
10-11-2006, 08:02 AM
OK I got it kinda running. I basically slaped it on quickly to test the front steering and see if I thought what would happen when the motors took off.

My steering didn't work. But it is an easy fix. Basically the hole is to large that I pass the rod through, so instead of turning the wheels it moves the shaft around the hole. I'll do one of two things to fix it.
1. make a new plate with a 1/4" hole in it that is about 1/2" long (oval).
2. same as one but add a yoke to the system near the axles so I can have the hole and the shaft will intersect it vertically instead of at and angle.

The other problem is "torque twist" kinda. basically the axles twist the leafs so I'll add a middle link to keep it from rolling.

Here are the other pics of the front steering.

the front doesn't steer as nice as the rear because of the way I set it up and I had to use a receiver pack for better steering. I'll get a final weight on it this afternoon as well. Is the rear steer proportional to the front, full on/off (switch) or? I have two seperate ideas floating around in my head. One involves a single servo (1/4 scale) turning two sets of wheels where one set is about 2/3 the other in throw...

Double J
11-15-2006, 02:47 PM
the rear steer is porportional and independent from the front.

Well I took it out on the rocks for just a few minutes. I didn't do to bad. but the rear steer posed a problem cause it's only attached at one end, but it did work.
The front tire came off. I didn't lock tight any screws yet. :x
I also weighed it and it came in at 12.05 pounds. Not too bad for how big it is.
It was also raining outside so traction sucked as well.

All and all not bad for it's maiden voyage.

Yes, I'm wiating on the gear case to come in then I'll switch the front steering with a "normal" set up. I've started the bumpers but put them a side to finish some tubers.

I've worked on the trailer a little but need some time to get the cuts just right. ;-)

Fixed the steering problem.

Here is a video with me playing with the kids.
It's crappy and doesn't have any music, also un edited. So you get about 2 minutes of couch crawling ins 4 1/2 minute video. But I'm still learning with the camera.

The kids love it. She was crying about 2 minutes before that. Put her in her seat and the fun begines.

BFR is now for sale. Sad to see her go but I over spent during Christmas and need to pay some bills. I'll be finishing the trailer this weekend and sending off to powder coating.

I make trailers for $300.
I'm selling BFR with the trailer for $700. The rig is RTR minus the batteries.

If I were to seperate it would $300 for the trailer and $400 for the CXT.
