Do you offer different backbone lengths? I want something that is 18", and not some knockoff stick! If it would bolt right in to my stick, that would be pretty awsome ;-) Whaddya say Kevin?

It's in the works guys. We have a 12.5" wheelbase backbone "re-tested" already. Just waiting for the new jig to be finished. Then we can do some different lengths. Not sure of the price on custom length backbones and kits yet. I'll post any new info here.

Happy New Year guys. I just wanted to post up an update. Morrison is making the new jig as a favor and has a newborn and a new house so his time is limited. I spoke with him this weekend and he's really not sure when he'll be done with it. Sorry about the delay guys. I'll continue to post any updates here.

Again, sorry about the long delay on these. Our jig to produce backbones is made for the 16" wheelbase trucks only. I just ordered a bunch of tube that will be in sometime this week. Then it will go off to Morrison to get machined on a mill instead of waiting for the better jig to be made up.

I'm not sure of the exact date of availability yet. You can buy either the complete chassis kit just like you can now, or you will be able to purchase just the backbones.

My apologize guys. The slight hiccup I mentioned turned out to be a large hiccup. The jig we were having made had one set of holes drilled at the wrong angle. We attempted to fix it, but could not. $200 in materials and 10+ hours of labor down the tube. We'll be starting on a new jig but I'm not sure when we'll be done. I'm really sorry about this long delay.

None of the backbones that where made on the new jig where ever sent out. Actually there is an entire bucket full of them here that will probably go to scrap. The are all drilled and tapped, with the shock mounting holes drilled at too shallow of an angle.

Ok guys, the new jig is finished. Two test backbones where made up and tested on my truck. All looks well. We'll be making a short run of the normal size backbone and the 2.2 backbones. They should be available in 2 weeks. If all goes well with them we'll make a full run of them. It looks as if allot of you are interested in an 18" wheelbase version. I'll have some of them made up as well. Any other sizes you guys are interested in?

Kevin.
Can you classify the bone length 12/17/18 and the ideal wheel?
fotr example:
12" + 2.2
16 + 40" (the original)
17 + 40"
18 + 40"
Kevin, Can you write shortly what are the advantages and disadvantages of the various length/wheel tested ?
Than , when you are ready, you can post a photo of the whole family complete!
Bye

Hello Mario. You have guessed the correct wheel size here:
12" + 2.2
16 + 40 series or maxx size
17 + 40"
18 + 40"
For the 16"-18" the biggest difference is vertical climbing performance versus handling. The longer backbone will climb much better the more vertical you get, but you loose allot of maneuverability. I'm not sure I have enough trucks around to assemble all sizes together for one photo, but you guys can post your pictures here once you get the 17" and 18" versions. Thanks.

Hi Jason,
I would like to ask You the advantage of choosing 17" instead of the 18" version of backbone.
I tought the 18" can climb greater rocks or stairs or others.
Infact I asked Kevin for a 18". I tought it was better than 17".
But I own only a 16"stick, my first crawler....
I haven't experiences of other wheelbases.
Let me know What do you think. And all of you what do you think...
J Rock
04-29-2007, 06:43 PM
It is personal preference based upon the type of terrain you crawl on. The longer the wheelbase is, the greater the vertical climbing ability will be. You also have to consider that the longer it is the greater the chance of getting high centered will be. You have to find a happy medium between the two. In my opinion that will be the 17", that's what I'm going with. But remember it's based upon the terrain also. Do you crawl a lot of steep vertical climbs? This is all just my 2 cents though. Good luck.
Jason
I want a 18" backbone for sure.
