What I have found that might work great as a thicker leaf spring than the lawnmower pull start is from doing drywall work. Any way I was helping a friend redo some drywall and when we were mudding and taping I noticed the mud taping knife was flexable. He had a new one there and I asked if I could barrow it.........well he said NO you will just cut it up. It is made with blue steel fairly stiff and yet flexable. I will be getting a taping knife in a few day to try it out. I dont need leafs but who knows some day I may. I am just waiting for parts for parts so I have to keep thinking.

Different motors use different width recoil starter rewind springs. I made some leafs out of a recoil spring from a 3.5 HP Briggs and stratton. the spring was 1/4" wide and it fits between the TLT link hardware. Two leafs per pack was able to support a 12" wheelbased truck made from split 1/2" square steel stock and it flexed real well.

I thought everybody used the metal packing tape , and if you wanted more strength then just add another strip .

well we sell the 1/2 inch metal strapping for 85 bucks a roll
that's 100 lbs of the stuff plenty to start a fleet of scale leaf sprung rigs

you could use lawn mower recoil to make leafs like every one mentioned but that's not the point of this thread .
