I'll have to clean up/smooth the joints on the frame before he goes to be powdercoated.

Looney...of course you can drive it! Never a problem to drive one of my rigs, you know that.

The WK isn't dead, it still lives. I'm using empty axle tubes for now.

ScG, you'd have to ask rckjeep, he built Ralph's frame ages ago.

Wildrice, this rig sees abuse on a weekly basis.

Plans:

WK axles
TXT tranny
Revo driveshafts
Powered by Novak Crawler system
Steering servo is a JR Sport 125MG
DX3
All-Ts on RPM Revolvers

It's the same basic stuff with the exception of the WK axles, Revo shafts, and the suspension links I'm making.

Servo and battery placement will also change.

I might have some build progress to post up later tonight.

Bah! What's worse is my bin of ideas. Too many ideas, not enough materials or time.

I started on the suspension links. Wanted to use a bit of a different setup on this one.

I'm using 4-40 and 8-32 blind nuts and some 3/16" and 1/4" brake tubing to make the links.

First thing I did was sand the finish off the flange on the 1/4 brake line. Also used a Dremel to take some finish off the blind nuts. Drilled the ID of the 1/4" line to 7/32" and slid the blind nut into the tubing.

MIG welded the flange of the tubing and the blind nut together then brazed the joint.

Ground down the excess material then put the link in the cordless drill. Sanded it with 120 grit to make it look presentable.

End result is pictured below. I think it'll work so I'm off to make a few more.

With the abuse you put poor old Ralph through, do you think those links will survive?...Doesn't sound like he's got any New Years resolutions to go on a diet.

Clever Idea, and nice execution.

JasonInAugusta
12-21-2006, 09:28 AM
Looneybin, The end result will be worth it.

wildrice, The way I'm building these links they'll be plenty beefy. "thumbsup" I still have more more steel to add.

With the suspension I'm putting in a conventional link just won't work. I figured this was the best way to get the job done.

As young as rockcrawler505 is, we'll all be old and grey by the time he's just hitting his crawling stride. :)

Interesting idea about the links, I like it. So the majority of the inside of the link is hollow?

JasonInAugusta
12-21-2006, 07:10 PM
Yeah, basically the entire link is hollow. (I know what you're thinking and it won't be weak. "thumbsup" )

I wanted to have more progress pic but I set the MIG wrong and burned through one of the 3/16" tubes.

That wouldn't have been so bad, but there was threaded rod under the area I burned through. The rod wouldn't come out so I'll have to cut the tube and screw. Once I noticed this I left things on the bench and cooled off.

I'll try to post up more pics of the build later tonight.

Yeah, that's about what I was wondering. How it will have more strength by having less material inside a hollow tube. I have an idea though, you can fill it with the hopes and dreams of people who have had hollow tubes break on them when they hit it from the side.

Seriously though, I like the idea and I really would like to know how it works out. I don't know anything about the tubes aside from I can bend and braze them. How do you make a flange on the other side of the tube?

Here's the near complete link assembly.

Lowers are the regular aluminum links that have been used on Ralph for ages.

The uppers are the crap I've been working on. Basically they're a larger version of the stock Wheely King upper link.

The center section is made from 3/16" brake tubing with the 4-40 blind nut welded and brazed in place. This is what attaches the "V" of the link to the axle. A 4-40 screw passes through the upper link mount and threads into the center of the "V".

The two outer links are the 1/4" brake tubing with 8-32 blind nuts welded and brazed in place. Sections of 8-32 threaded rod and some Kyosho 6.8mm ball ends with flanged balls complete the upper links.

More steel will be added shortly.

nightcrawler
12-21-2006, 10:54 PM
Is there a reason why you opt for U link rather the 4 link?

JasonInAugusta
12-21-2006, 10:59 PM
The Wheely King axles use this config in stock form.

I decided to carry this over to Ralph instead of making a bunch of aluminum bits to mount a conventional 4-link.

An advantage to doing it this way is that the Wheely King axles stay, for the most part, intact.

I also have no detectable axle steer.

Very cool JIA. I learned something new with the flared ends. I might have to pick me one of those up, I like how it looks. Granted, I suck at measuring it in the first place, so they're always short or long anyway. Pretty ends won't make mine look any better. heh

I really like those triangulated 3 link uppers like that. You're right, that will be very solid.

JasonInAugusta
12-22-2006, 12:13 AM
It's stout right now but to make strong enough for Ralph I'll beef it up a bit.

Cross support bars parallel to the base?

JasonInAugusta
12-22-2006, 07:25 PM
Just one on the wide end.

Since the upper links remain stationary in relation to one another I'll cut some sheet steel and make an electronics shelf that will be welded/brazed to the upper links.

Between the cross brace and sheet steel it'll be stout.

Hey JIA, What are you using to attach the shocks? Or are you attaching them to the axles? I'm just curious cause I'm re-doing the rear four link on my Gecko 2 to give it a 16.5 inch wheelbase and was wondering what I should use to attach the shocks.

Got the front end completely wrapped up after the in-laws left today.

Used some sheet steel (22ga if I remember right) to brace the upper links. Cool thing about this brace is that it doubles as the servo tray.

Used some Associated servo mounts to get things in place. The steering link in the pics is from a TLT kit. It'll get replaced with a 4-40 rod sleeved with carbon tube.

Cool thing about this setup is that the servo still moves with the axle. I tried and tried and I can't find a bit of bump steer in the system.

Mocked up for servo placement.

Here's a couple more images. Keep in mind the rear only has the lower two links installed at this time and not a single tire is glued.

Front shot.
http://www.projecttwin.com/files/ralph/upf.jpg

The flex shot. No battery is installed yet, even with the fuel tubing "bump stops" on the shock shafts, the shocks still have more travel in them. The tire will actually rub the frame at full stuff. I also have fuel tubing inside the shock bodies (on the shaft) to limit droop.

Oh I love Ralph by the way.

As of now it'll cost you two Wheely King kits. All the parts required for the 4WD conversion aren't available just yet. So if you absolutely have to have a 4WD WK you'll have to buy two and use one for a donor right now.

highmark, hugacious  I like it!

wayfastwhitey440, the upper link is a solid unit. There is no flex in the unit itself, just in the three ball ends at each corner. The upper link mounts on the axles are held in place by three screws and can be removed and flipped depending on if the axle is used front or rear. HPI's site has an exploded view.

Dave, Yeah, he's definitely growing up. Finally decided to transport him in style...

Probably already asked, but how well do those All-T's work? I have been thinking about picking up a set.

The more weight you have on the All-Ts the better they are. Ralph tipped the scales at 9+lbs with TLT axles. I'm sure he'll be closer to the 10lb mark this time around. Have to keep in mind that Ralph is by no means a comp rig, just a fun basher. I'm not too worried about tire slippage but I don't find myself looking for more traction either. I just drive the rig and have fun.

Vids of the truck here:

I'm going to stick with the curent scheme for a while. When I made the first panels they didn't come out exactly like I wanted.

The next panels to go on will be very close to what the can looks like.

Just need to get the paint masks so I can make the new panels.

I just finished and threw away a Rockstar can... Should I dig it out and send it to you? :-P

Thanks for the DX6 tips by the way. That set up feels more natural! Now I just need to upgrade to brushless for the drag braking... "thumbsup"

I already sent a can through the band saw so I could scan it for paint masks.

What's great about having the DX6 set up like that is that you can't accidentally hit throttle while steering. 8)

Nice! I seriously think I am going to use a Monster paint scheme on my 2.2 comp lid!

That was the problem I was having with using a stick per axle setup!
The only twist I added to your hints was setting the mix to one of the switches so i could turn it on/off as needed. As I said, no brushless yet, so no drag breaks... so I turn it off to give a little revere throttle to the back axle during a dig. And I can do zero turn and back dig!
Thanks again! "thumbsup"

Problem with that is accumulating reverse penalties.

But yeah, turning within the wheelbase is cool.

Not too worried about the bellcrank.

JIA, The rebuild is looking good! I was looking at mounting my link/shock mounts like that but the taper of the axle tube and the width threw me off. What did you do to get them to stay located? If U don't mind me asking! Yes, this is a repeat post from a different thread; I can't see what you did to accomplish a 90 degree rotation.

JasonInAugusta

The two lower links have ball ends just like any other suspension link.

The upper 3-link has a ball end at each chassis mounting point.

The axle end of the upper 3-link has a 4-40 screw that passes through the upper link mount at the axle. Inside that upper link mount is a ball that rotates inside the link mount...just like a ball in a ball end. Think of the way the heims on a Stick work and you'll understand.

Creep
01-05-2007, 08:36 PM
Oh I see... you thought I meant something else! What I was talking about is the little sandwich clamps that hold the links and shocks onto the axle. In stock form, the shock mount is above the axle while the link mounts are below the axle - I know this can be rotated 180 degrees and still mounted normally. But I was wanting to rotate them 90 degrees and couldn't because of the taper of the axle tube and different width (it is not square) - then I saw you were able to rotate them 90 degrees and was curious how you kept them from sliding around on the axle tube...? I have decided to drill a hole in the pinion-side of the axle tubes to mount my shocks that way instead. Still curious how you did it though... I hope this makes my question clear...?

JasonInAugusta
01-05-2007, 08:48 PM
Oh chit! I fugged up!

The axles do taper but HPI was smart enough to put three bosses that run front to rear on the axle housing.

The two outer bosses serve to "level the shock/link mount while the third, taller boss keeps the mount located laterally...it won't slip left/right on the housing.

The axle measures 18mm x 16mm so it's not perfectly square. 2mm is nothing more than .079" and some change. A couple of carefully placed pieces of .040" lexan sheet (bwteen the outer bosses) work great to get things back in shape.

After using the lexan as a shim you might want to attach a couple of pieces of lexan to the axle housing on each side of the mount to keep it from sliding left/right. I haven't reached this point in the build yet but that's my initial plan.

We'll see how it goes from here.

Ralph got powdercoated last week. "thumbsup" I figured that, after all the beatings he's been given, he deserved some attention. The color is called "Blasted Aluminum". It has the look and feel of sandblasted aluminum. Shines like a metal flake at times too.

Eh? So I can expect to see Ralph on the cover of the May issue when it turns up in my mailbox? Ok, I'll settle for anywhere in it. But look, you gotta come clean on this one. Are you going to show us how your made enough space on those mounts to mount the bottom link and the shock both there? I'm looking at the stock link and stock shock, and there isn't enough room for both of them there. If you're not going to tell us about this, can you point us in the right direction here? I've managed to secure the bracket 90 degrees out like you did, but apparently the ends are too large.

rckjeep just sent me an email...

"It's David LUKE, not PACK"

I've thought his last name was Pack since I bought the rig.

He must know that Ben Chandler guy.

So...Dave - Sorry about the cranal-anal loopback in the article.

No worries. Just stoked I got a mention. A lot of people wouldn't say anything about the guy who built it. Thank you for Keeping Ralph in the mainstream of RC Crawling. Nice work. Ralph may get a twin of sorts when I get a house and/or a garage. I miss that thing.

Ralph is sitting on a chest in (of all places) the bedroom.

So while not technically on a shelf, he's collecting dust.

Haven't had time to hit Pointes West during good weather.

It got down to 32 here last night...too cold to make a morning run with the wind coming off that lake.

I know!

It was mid 50's in CT for three straight days and I was crawling on snow up there.

"So do you think you'll like it up here?"

"Yeah, but you guys have to get all this white crap off the crap off the ground."

Nothing has really changed except he's now sporting a 7.4V 6400mAh Li-Po saddle pack. "thumbsup"

If HPI doesn't jump on the Crawler King name and build a crawler from the WK axles, it would be a shame.

Yeah, he's still missing that one rock ring. :-(

I think Pyro has one on the way. "thumbsup"

Stock foams on double-narrowed Revolvers. The only cutting I do is to cut a cone out of each side...from the outer edge of the foam to the inside portion of each bead.

It's not much but it offers support and allows the tire to flex.

I'm not too worried about traction with Ralph...he's on the hefty side at 9lbs.

I could put TLT tires on him and find traction.

That's still an absolutely sweet rig. No matter how many times I see a picture or video of Ralph, it always impresses.

I'm running my All T's without foams, on Axial beadlocks...they seem
to be working fine.

But, My WK is alot lighter than Ralph "thumbsup"

My dad is in town right now. He saw Ralph and the two of us were discussing when I took the rig crawling in Florida.

"When he rolled everyone said DAMMMNNN!"

Dad was like "When who rolled?"

That's when dad learned that this rig has its own personality. Folks don't refer to it as "it" but "him" or "he".

Definitely a unique rig. "thumbsup"

they are both nice looking rigs im working on a tlt sw2 right now

[quote=JasonInAugusta;608087]Trikster,

Dad's tuber is a great little scaler that shares a lot of Ralph's traits. They're both cool looking, heavy, too big for the comp 2.2 class and too small to be classified as a Super.

You might have already said this but...with ralph being too big for the 2.2 class, do you run in the super class? and how does ralph stack up against trucks that are 2-3 inches longer in wheelbase...

i told my gf she needs to marry somebody like ralph someday...the strong handsome silent type...

Just wanting to look at some pics of Ralph, I'm planning a solid tube slightly larger tuber. Where's all the old pics Jason?
