Tread cutting

What is everyone's personal tread cutting pattern for diffrent tires?

I got a stock set of clod tires and I have no clue how i should cut them. Whats the best pattern for clod tires?????????

I'd say look around the net and see what others have done to their tires. It's a personal descision on looks and function.

I'd say try something different.... figure out some other way to cut/groove them, a way that hasn't been doen yet.

I kinda like the looks of what you did with your Kongs. How do they work? Cash permitting,I'm gonna get a set soon and am looking for ideas to use in my pattern. I'd like to use 2 or 3 different designs to come up with a unique pattern.

What do you think of this pattern? :twisted: I wanted to add tread like a rock crawler tread instead of a mud tire. I also cut the side blocks and sandedn down the side wall.. This allowed the tire to flex easier.

All kidding aside,the close up shot,(1st link of your list) I can't help but think of Pro Comps Xterrain. The way the treads are and all the sipeing,thats the 1st thing I thought. Do they work good?

Yeah it does look like an X-Terrain !

I only have one tire completely done and all the tread blocks glued on another. It's kind of hard to tell.

What I do notice is that the tire seems to conform to the terrain better than the non siped Kongs. Mainly the side lugs. Since I undercut the side lug. Basiclly got rid of the rubber on the sidewall under the edge of the lug. It flexes allowing more of the inner lugs to grab. It seemed like before, The edges of the lugs would do most of the contact. I'll know better once they're all cut. Big pain in the ass.

I'm hoping, with the additional tread, that the tire will spin less before grabbing. The additional tread is a softer compound.

Hey great job on the tires!!! First thing I thought of was X-TERRAINS!!!


One thing I have read about the 1:1 X-terrains was about it's tread pattern, it has great traction going forward but less going backward. I guess b/c the way the lugs are shaped. THere was an article I read about $300+ tires - Are they worth it? in some offroading magazine where they explained the whole bit. Also the lack of side-biters vs others like the bfg crawlers......

Have you noticed this with yours?

I'm not finished cutting them up so its kinda hard to tell. It does flex better.

As far as direction its hard to tell. I'll try to experiment more with that.

I'm on the fence about side lugs. It can work for or against you depending on how the tire contacts the rock. On the other hand, the side wall flexes alot more. If I had lugs there, I would be able to put more tread to the ground.

I'll have to wait until all four are done before I can draw a conclusion.

It seems the most popular pattern for Swamp Dawgs is to cut out every little tread (turns out to be every other thread.) I tried that pattern on mine, they hook up 100x better than stock. I also cut a slot in the middle of each tread with wire cutter so the treads would flex easier.

That pattern in chevrons would probibly work well. Or just cut out half of each tread.

This isnt mine, but it is the pattern I used. I elaborated on the side lugs a bit.

And belive me when I say they HOOK UP!
