I'm from D.C.: I'd recommend going to Great Falls park - look at the Billy Goat trail. While not everyone is an enthusiast, you'll have no shortage of spectators on most weekend afternoons.

i'm not too far away. i'm in winchester Va, x2 on the great falls that place rocks! no pun intended. harpers ferry WV is another good local spot. pm me when you've got a rig together.
