View Full Version : Dad's Tuber

Dad bought a Scorpion frame from Perry at the Augusta comp this weekend.
Here's a link to the frame: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?p=503873#post503873
The frame was designed to be used with Clod axles but we decided to go with Wheely King axles instead. (That's right, Dad bought two WKs to build this rig  )
We're using a 55 turn Axiom, Wheely King transmission, Revo driveshafts, WK axles, RPM Revolvers and Imex All-Ts. Should be a 14" wheelbase.
emaxxjeremy locked the diffs and helped hog out the slots for the driveshafts to pass through the cab.
We just welded/brazed the blind nuts into the 1/4" brake line. Instead of keeping the flange like I did on Ralph we changed the way the links look on his...they're cleaner looking than mine. "thumbsup"
Will get some pics up in a few...

Here's some shots...
Driver seat, Wheely King tranny, and the stock WK ESC. The battery is an 8.4V 1000mAh pack.
Links are 1/4 brake tubing that's been drilled out with a 7/32" bit. 8-32 blind nuts were then MIG welded then brazed into the tube.

How well do those brake line links hold up (unless this is a first time for you, then I would have to wait)? Do you think the blind nut is a necessary bit?

We welded 16 ga steel to the tops of the links (same thing I did on Ralph). These links will be the most durable parts on the truck.
The blind nuts are what the threaded rod screws into. Completely necessary.

Rear suspension is done, shocks are installed, and wheels/tires have been chosen. Dad's using my old RPM Revolvers with All-Ts.
He picked up an OFNA antenna mount for the truck so now he has an aerial whip off the back right corner.
Tonight we'll build the front upper 3-link and install electronics.

Still need to limit droop in the shocks but the suspension is, for the most part, done. I did the best I could with the long cockpit/short link setup...should work decent once we limit travel. Will make the upper plate for the front link tomorrow as well as mount the steering servo.

Jason, give me the dimensions and how wide you want the hump and I could do one at our Hot Rod shop...We have a machine that puts nice beads in flat steal or aluminum...I think it goes up to 1'' wide...

eric, I'm running 82053 on Ralph, Dad is running 82063 on his.
I was running the 63s on Ralph with the TLT axles but wanted to run the 53s to bring the width down so he'd fit on the trailer.
I put my old 63s and All-Ts on Dad's truck.
K9, thanks, but I can make it if needed.

What ya guys running pinion wise for that 450 ? Did ya turn the shaft down or ?? just get 4mm pinions ??? Does make for good wheel speed ?
JasonInAugusta
01-24-2007, 09:16 PM
12 tooth pinion, 93 tooth spur.
Wheel speed is good but it seems the 450 is a tad too small for a 9lb rig.
There are times when it seems to not have enough bottom...like when the fronts are against a vertical face and you push the truck into and up the vertical.
Since we're running 3300s I'm guessing it's not the batteries. A larger stator size would probably help.

Yeah, I saw that it only a 890vk and thought it kinda on the low side for almost pig of rig. I take it you guys lathe'd down the shaft to fit a reg. pinion on ?? How many cells ?
JasonInAugusta
01-24-2007, 09:37 PM
Six cells are all that'll fit under the steering wheel.
This truck was light during the build but we added a good bit of steel and lead to keep it planted.
It'll creep through climbs that the comp rigs struggled with. "thumbsup"
This past week has been a frantic build/drive/build/drive test and tune.
A larger outrunner will no doubt cure things. The motor stays cool to touch but seems to wimp out at times...even with gearing pushed as far as we could physically go.

hrummm....do i see an order being placed for brushless?
JasonInAugusta
01-26-2007, 12:09 PM
ScG he has a brushless setup as it is.
I might order a larger motor for his truck, still debating which motor to use.
Dad is happy with it as is...plenty of truck for him.

So does your dad any future mods planned or pretty much done ?Also did you make the steering wheel or pull it off something ??
JIA's Dad
02-04-2007, 01:05 AM
Eric, The steering wheel came with the frame I bought in the beginning. As for any further mods to this build I am undecided since Jia and the guys worked so hard on it for me to see I was able to crawl while I was at Augusta. I am currently acquiring shop equipment and parts in order to start my first build on my own. And trying to decide what it may be. Possibly a Hummer or a pickup on a scale type build."thumbsup"

Thanks Scooter, I just finished installing a set of steel gears on the Scorpion King. 32 pitch 9 pinion with a 72 on the tranny shaft. Made it a lot slower and really helped with the motor stall. I can go strait up the wall in my kitchen with it now. Before it would not do that at all. I can't wait to hook it up on the rocks again. Because of the larger diameter of the tranny gear I had to install a 1/4" aluminum plate spacer under the tranny.

How did I miss this thread for so long!?!? :x
I always go wheelin with my dad but my Jeep is always in pieces (imagine that) so I use one of his everywhere we go. He quickly earned the nickname "Pop" because of his driving style and role in my life. I bet I could talk him into r/c because it is about a whole $5 cheaper to build an rc crawler than a 1:1. :-P Keep the rigs coming JIA and JIA senior... I wish I had your camera - wanna trade my WK link mounts for your camera? huh, huh??
