Dye for hard bodies?

I know some wheels take dyes very well but I can't find any information on using dye on plastics that already have color. I realize that it would be impossible to make an item lighter in color but I want to make a blue item black without paint that scrapes off when it hits a rock.
Have any of you experimented with wheel dyes on plastic hard bodies? If so how satisfied are you with the results? Would you do something differently?

I wanted to dye the body for my high lift, everywhere i asked everybody said it will not work, it will just melt they say, it has to be nylon?

styrene may not "melt" but it will get soft and deform easily. also, if you dye the body it will only just penetrate the surface and it will scrap off as easy or easier than paint.

Haven't actually tried it, but I don't think it would stand up to the heat. I tried to use the oven method to remove tires from some plastic Tamiya wheels, and they turned to mush. I imagine a body in boiling water would suffer the same fate.

Take a scrap piece and give it a try!
I know someone has to have a scrap
piece lying around, mayeb part of a clod body.

Or just some styrene sheet. I'd try it, but I don't want my parents to get pissed off at me for getting dye everywhere.

I watched StIcK kInG dye a TQ3 on a hotplate in my store. The first half came out OK, but the second half warped. The radio wouldn't fit in the pot so we had to flip it and it was resting on the side of the pot, that's where it warped. I know a TQ3 isn't nylon. Like BG said try it on some scap with some screen or a strainer so the piece doesnt touch the sides or bottom of the pan or maybe just dip it :?:
