Howdy, great forum you got here  Mind if I play?

I want to build up a rock crawler to have some fun with. From what I've been able to find out, the Clod uses the same (or simmilar) axle that's on my busted up grasshopper.

Do they have the same gear ratio, same width?

FWIW I'm thinking of using my hopper rear axle, and picking up a front clod axle and build up a chassis, but gear ratios may ruin that idea.

What do you think?

Clods look similar but have another gear for much more reduction...

Welcome Tommy, good luck on your search... :D :?
A good source for clod axles is www.Thundertechracing.com they got gear cases only for $140 per pair new. Great for a custom chassis. Check EBay as well if yer budget oriented.

BTW, Ace never grew up, heck neither did I

Grizz, thanks for the linky.

It's deffinately cheaper to pick a used one up on ebay. I've nabed complete (real) jeep axles cheaper than that 8O (and one running car).

Do ya think I'm on the right track...... Clod axles, and fabed frame?
My radio gear is still good.
I like the idea of NO driveshafts for reliability.
Are there other brands worth looking at for parts?

Here's my RIG, that should answer any questions about what path I would lead you on.  :P

Yes, clod axles with a fabbed frame is a great path to go on. Clod axles are very reliable, heck they been around for 17 years, Tamiya musta done something right in that time. I beat the snot out of mine on purpose and have had no problems.
I dont kow of any other non-driveshaft trucks to use for a crawler, Maxx and TXT based trucks are good too but they have driveshafts. It's your call on the preference. 8)

If you need a radio also then best thing would be to get a complete truck w/ radio and ESC from EBay.

Grizz. very nice, I saw you post a few weeks ago,

Here's my RIG, that should answer any questions about what path I would lead you on.

I believe that would be classified as THE DARK PATH.

Well see where this leads me, thanks for the info.

Clod axles are completely different than grasshopper axles. Most importantly, the grasshopper axles dont have steerable knuckles!

I just happened to have a grasshopper and a clod handy to show the difference! 8)

The Clodbuster gearcase was based on the Grasshopper/Hornet design. The gearing only differs by an extra gear on the clod case (that's why the clod needs a reverse rotation motor in the rear and the Grasshopper doesn't). I think Thommy was wondering if grasshopper axles could be used as a start for Clod axles. :D

Thommy, my wife guessed Poopietown as Greely right off. :D She also thinks Thommy2Tone sang that song "8675309". Is that right?

Wasn't that cheap trick?? That one was a little before my time.
It was either 2tone, or ThomThomclub  so I just picked one.

"She asked me to kiss her where it smells......so I took her to Greeley" 8O I couldn't help myself.

Thanks for the info guys. I was hoping to use some parts off the hopper, but ohwell.

Hope you had a great Mday!

So, some of you seems to have a quite good knowlege of the Grasshopper, is it possible to convert it to a 540 motor?

DCLXVI,

Sorry but I have exhausted my Grasshopper knowledge database. I've never owned one. Maybe AdamF would know since he actually has one.

I could be wrong but I thought on my old grasshopper I just bolted the 540 in. Seem to remember needing an 18 tooth pinion. But ya better check my facts on this. Mebbe that was my old Midnight Punkin I'm thinking about.
