Yes, then I ran over it with the XJ.

My **** can't be plastic.

I gotta say... with rolling eyes like that, you must think your crawler could handle 38 hours down there.

Don't roll your eyes at me.

Is your 1:1 built off a sprint car chassis?

Is your 1:1 built off a sprint car chassis?

The shop that built the chassis was a sprintcar shop but this was a custom build.

It was designed to be a Willys Rock Crawler. I came across it on E Bay few years back and noone bid on it. It had a Fiberglass willys body custom built for it aswell but I was not interested in fiberglass.

I plan on modifing it quite a bit, but for what I picked it up for, I could not pass.

I would have spent much more just on the price of steel!

The ad read: "Just add your dana 60's, some 44inch boggers and a bigblock and your set!"

I had the perfect donor!

Sold the built 440, Picked up a rolled 2001 Grand cherokee I gutted for the wiring harness, computer and engine.

Fuel injected and powerful in a nice neat package! the 440 barley fit between the rails, the 4.7l Has room to spare with the exhaust manafold's in place.

Poor Dodge pickemup. I liked it better.

Frame was bent, Cab was fuct, body mounts were not body mounts anymore, it **** the center driveshaft out all the time... all the years I owned it I was only able to put about 50 miles total on it.

Its in a better place now.

Well, after the river, The XJ, and a quick test run back at redrocks, I felt the need to be nice to it.

So I stripped her down and now I'm gonna give her some love!

Picked up a XR3 and a Mamba max.

Think I'm gonna dye the wheels, straighten the frame best I can, strip it, sand it, paint it and throw some new hardware at it.

Damn thing looks like its been run hard for years and its birthday was the first comp in the 06'-07' colorado winter series!!

Also foundout at redrocks, I need some 3/8" lower links! I turned a solid 1/4" link into a bananna!

Will post up as things get fixed!

I have had this Idea for a while now...

At 25 cents an axle how can I go wrong?!

7/16" Grade 8 disconecting/locking axleshaft for my maxx diff.

Basicly, the Quarter Drive 7/16" socket slides back and fourth enguaging and disenguaging on rear tire or the other.

When its disconected, if you like, it can be locked as a piviot point or freewheeled!

The 7/16" socket also fits nicely inside the 3/4" axle tube acting as a bushing holding the assembly from wobbleing

Not finished yet but the enguage, disenguage action on the drill is VERY promising!

Every 60 degrees there is a slot for lock and obvously the HEX's on the bolts would line up every 60 aswell.

Check out the pics!!"thumbsup"

The "T" in the "dogbone" part is a shaft of a hardend steel 1/8" drillbit.

I believe it to be WAY stronger then them damn MIP's

I would hate to put a torque wrench to a MIP....only because I need them for front spares still...

Still need the hole for the wheelpin, need to pickup a smaller drillbit, or hog out the 23mm's to accept 1/8"

The knuckles will be made from the slab of aluminum that everything is sitting on in the pics.

Damn, wish the hardware store was open!!!!!!8)

Anyone know the tensle strength of a 7/16" grade 8?

I wish man.... Took all night so far to do the one side!!!

I'm just going to get everything else good to go.... I need more stuff from the hardware!!!

Its looking sweet..... I tried to brake one of the bolt and nuts with two wrenches tightening to itself.... stripped it off after I put a cheatter wrench but I couldn't brake it!! I'm pretty sure its not going to fail.

The socket enguages so smooth, Its just perfect!

Very cool idea. Here is the tensile strengths, maybe someone verify but I think you are interested in shear strength for your concerns here.

Bolt Tensile Strength (Breaking Strength -lbs)
BoltDia(in) Grade 2 Grade 5 Grade 8
Coarse Fine Coarse Fine Coarse Fine
1/4 2350 2700 3800 4350 4750 5450
5/16 3900 4300 6300 6950 7850 8700
3/8
7/16 7850 8800 12800 14400 15900 17800
1/2 10500 11800 17000 19200 21300 24000
9/16 13500 15000 21800 24400 27300 30400
5/8 16700 18900 27100 30700 33900 38400
3/4 24700 27600 40100 44800 50100 56000

I would only have one concern (and it shouldn't be a big concern with the normal forces from an RC car anyway). By cutting and heating the drill bit as well as the socket, you most likely removed any of the hardness. You would need to anneal them to return them to their previous state. As I said though, I doubt you'll have any issues with your app.

Anyone know the tensle strength of a 7/16" grade 8?

I like how it clean it looks. As for the tensile strenth of a 7/16 grade 8 it is: Safe working load, 700 PSI shear strenght at the thread root, 1130 psi shear strenght whole bolt and 560 psi shear tensile strenght at the tread root. The over all breaking strenght (shear) for a 7/16 g8 is 15900 LBS curse thread, 17800 lbs in fine thread:shock: So if you break one..............

Safe working load, 700 PSI shear strenght at the thread root

So... it would probably take atleast a 30 foot fall before it would sheer off the nut holding the 23mm? I think I could live with that...

I'm not worried about twisting one of these. I think the 23mm would explode out of the rim before they twisted!

I'm gonna go with the 1/8" wheelpin in the rear aswell.

One of these days I gotta get EvilEddy to let me snap a shot of his MIP's.

I took out 13 MIP's with my bombproof torpedo emaxx 7 cells and 750 motors w/jumbo swamp dawgs the exact at the broken MIP in this pic.

But Ol' EvilEd over there, he's got 6 granaded and twisted MIPS that have been Killed in ways I never Imagined.

Here is a shot of the GR8 axles next to the MIP's.

Perhaps, as a Nylint Crawler, I am a bit behind the curve, but shouldn't they be pretty strong?
What're they made of? Hollow?

Well I'm sorry man, But there is not much light at 3 in the morning.... I stayed up all night finishing this for the comp today.

Ok, well then I appologize.

Wasn't tryin to make you guys squint.... I will take some better video.

I was just really excited after a week of building it and getting metal in my eye and have to have it drilled out.

Then, getting it done, Hours from the comp, staying up all night, still haven't been to bed.

Sorry about that.

I shall take more video that you will be able to see.

The video was more of a sneak peak of whats to come.... I didn't even have the tires on or the axle installed.

Maybe someone from the comp has some video of it in action...

I will have to check my movies in the future!

I just watched it and It does not look how it did when I made it. Not only that, The addition of the sound track extended the length of the movie way past the end. It was a last second thing to add the sickness soundtrack.

I forgot you need to trim off the audio on thats left over after the video is over.

Then, The video where its dark, my original movies off the camera are alot better and you can see whats going on, thats why I responded the way I did earlier.

The biggest mistake I made though was posting without checking the video. I did that because I was in a rush and very tired, the battery had just got done charging and we were late to the comp because of the charging battery....

I figured since it was charging I would throw the video that I had together for a cut brake teaser video... Doh!

I feel stupid, but hey, I had no sleep, **** happens.

Sorry Everyone, Better things to come!

Now this is an interesting idea... The vid was a little on the dark side but I think I've got the gist of what you're trying to do. (I'm assuming the differential will not be locked)
Here's a few quick layman-style notes on tool steels and the hardening thereof (what most of us know as "heat treating") I should preface that the types of hardenable tool steels and the methods used to harden them are vast in number.
If you heat a heat-treated part beyond it's critical temperature (you'll see a color change - yellow/straw/brown/blue/gray as you get hotter, this is what occurs if you machine a heat-treated part w/o taking proper precautions to prevent it from overheating) that's essentially what you are doing -annealing. That's why you ruin a heat-treated part if you make it turn colors. If you can make your modifications w/o overheating the part (by constantly quenching the part in a cup of water/oil if working the part by hand, or flowing water/oil over it while it's being machined if it's chucked in a lathe/mill or otherwise jigged up and unable to be moved) it will retain it's hardness. Getting a part to yellow or a little beyond will probably not change the heat treat. If you turn it brown to blue to gray, it's done. You just annealed it.
Annealing a steel alloy - heat it to it's critical temp (usually a dull cherry red - 1800 degrees F approx for most tool steels) and pack it (I pack parts in lime) so it cools slowly over a period of 4-6 hours. This will return the steel to it's softest state for ease of machining, etc. So you won't eat up drill bits, lathe or mill tools, or sanding/grinding wheels/belts trying to remove hardened metal.
To return the part to a hard state after machining, (heat treat) it needs to be brought back to it's critical temperature and then quenched to cool it quickly. (depending on alloy, the optimum quenching agent will be either oil or water. Some steels are even air-hardened)
Now the steel will be at it's hardest state. Too hard for many applications, the harder the steel becomes, it will also become more brittle. (for example - What's the hardest substance known to man? A diamond, of course. They will cut glass. But what happens to a diamond if you tap it with a hammer? It will shatter...)
That's where tempering comes into play - re-heating the part to a lower temperature (usually a strong yellow/straw color) and quenching several times. This is the tricky process as far as the temperature is concerned - if you return the part to near it's critical temperature, you lose the heat treat and have to start over.
For the application under discussion, I don't think over-heating the parts you mentioned is going to be much of a concern. Sounds like you've done some testing on your own, also. You should be fine with the limited amount of torque you'll be applying here.
You ain't breaking Grade 8 hardware with an r/c truck. No way...

I've seen a show or 2 at Redrocks - I'd bet there are so many good lines in that place!

Yeah, your right, 200 to 1 and the mamba don't make much torque! haha...
Seriously though, thanks for the info!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=281150095945980222

I was careful not to heat any of the components, nothing got hot enough to turn color except for the drillbit when I drilled the alignment hole dead center on one.... if it weakend it there its not going to matter....

No, The weak point turns out to be the wheelpin hole. I thought I could get away with an 1/8" pin but I had to go back to the same size as the stock e-maxx... I have had good luck with the roll pins I used in the MIP shafts before... Its kind of like a hub fuse. I have to REALLY torque on it to kill one.

I already had a concern about the wheelpin but did not have enough time to Rebuild one before the comp. It held in for it so that makes me happy!

The WheelChair will be back in action with the smaller wheel pins VERY soon. I predict no more carnage for the GR8 Axle.

Here is a short clip I made today showing the cutbrakes in action, I have video of it being useful but we had to offload it on ed's laptop because we took so many pics today. He is on his way back to alamosa so it will be a while before I will have access to them again. :-(

I didn't catch who took video at the comp... any chance of gettin to see the video taken of the cutbrakes in action?

Yeah, I was right about the 30 foot drop thing....

While tryin to get the left rear to lock, the WheelChair fell off the Edge of Insanity today... 8)

Landed right on the side I was trying to lock!!
I guess I needed to build another shaft!!

So now I have 3 snapped grade 8 bolts.

First two the pin was too big.

This one.... well... a stock maxx knuckle and MIP would have shattered with the force this thing took!

If it would have locked, I would have been just fine and made it.

I thought for sure it bent my axle tube looking at it from up top, but after I got down there I realized the only damnage was the shaft itself.

But all of that is ok. I have gotten alot better at building these shafts and I realized on the last one that It needs to be really straight to begin with... I was in the hardware store for 10 mins this morning to find only 1 bolt that was straight!

It works SO much better on the side I built this morning because it is so straight.

The old side that gave me crap today was the one that suffered the rath so I'm pretty happy about that! Also the pin was not centered as good as it could have been.

I gotta go find another hardware store... I gotta get back up the mountain and get the bugs worked out!!!!"thumbsup"

I am down to the smallest drillbit in the pic for a wheelpin.

You can see the one axle that is not snapped off yet is broken but still holding.

Took a 30+ foot plunge off a cliff because the action of the whole
cut brake linkage was not smooth enough to enguage.

I added another servo to balance the forces needed to shift it how I need it to.

Killed a 645 gear right away, had another one, put it in while it charged.

Had a crowd gathering watchin me crawl, so I thought I'd try the insano line...

I had a killer run, just walkin where ever. 8)

Got to the edge, put it on slowmo and crept along really nicely for 14.4v!!! Damn that Mamba is nice, Ended up doin a cartwheel down a 40 foot V notch, Saved by 3 foot pack of snow at the bottom!

There is not even a place you could take a picture from that would show how far it fell.

It caught about 3 seconds of solid air time and Bam! The V notch.

1 Jato end
1 8/32 stainless stud
1 Huge OFNA? rod end.

Popped the driveshaft back in and it drove up the rock sitting there solid packed with snow and draggin a link. HAHAHA

No sense having it unless you use it!
You are not having fun till you get stuck or break something.

Where did you get those 1/4" links?????
Perhaps, as a Nylint Crawler, I am a bit behind the curve, but shouldn't they be pretty strong?
What're they made of? Hollow?

Well the 1/4" solid aluminum hold up for the upperlinks, but i have been KILLING lowers like they are made of plastic.

Thats why I went to 3/8" solid aluminum that held in there till the 40 foot drop off yesterday.

Now I just picked up some 1/4" rod ends, and plan on grade 8 1/4" Bolts for links.

Just for the lowers."thumbsup"

Its going to be alot heavier but it will not break I don't think.

I hate having to go home because I'm broke.

Output gears piss me off.

With my front dig inside the tranny, it does not spin on the front output shaft anymore it does not need bearings.

I had to build the ultimate replacement for that junk 31 tooth second gear output.

Started with 1/2" 6061 Aluminum Plate:

Busted out the Drill with a 1.5" hole saw bit with a 5.95mm drillbit.

Hey Pat, HOW THE HELL do you keep coming up with cool stuff like this?

Its called necessity!"thumbsup"

Also, Here is a sneak peek into project "Super Steer."
I wedged the Wheelchair in the Lazyboy and it was STILL able to turn. It ended up moving the entire truck to turn the front wheels!

I am addicted to the power, but the speed is killin me.

Its a vent motor for the dual climate zones on a 2001 grand cherokee I parted out.

Still not sure on the plastic gears... stripped one out just to see and it took insane force before it did. I have a spare set but we will find out...

The motor in it sucked at even 12 volts so I did a little somethin I learned messing with low gearing radio shack toys

Two 645 motors.

Check it out!

I had to man, there are only 2 teeth that contact each other on the maxx second gear. A 3025 would eat that plastic gear EVERY time a load came up I am willing to bet.

Screw those people who make shotty parts for mucho denaro!!!
I didn't like how they built the slop back into the maxx gearing.

I assembled the tranny, put some lucas oil stabilizer, sealed the case and ran it. Very nice operation!

Forgot I sheered the pin on the inputgear before last comp. Repiinned it and now the hole in the shaft has wore so the gear is loose.

So I am going to throw one of those in it before I put it back in the beast.

The Super Steering uses the gear that I have not been able to strip. The second gear from the motor. (The one that strips that center one.)

Now, for these 1/4" links...

I'm going to have to call up and place an order with Holmes soon!
I need a 3025 before moab!"thumbsup"

We put 14.4v to it and I was glad to see some speed out of it with a 22 tooth pinion, but I think the 3025 is the one for me.

The 3013 was alot more powerful then the titan @ 14.4v but didn't have the low end grunt to crawl with the 22 tooth.

We tried a 14 tooth pinion and it was alot better for crawling but the Wheel speed was gone.

It was good to see the 985kv was not as slow as I had thought it would be.

Since it is the same Kv rating of the 3025, noload wheel speed should be the same.

I had to stop by and check and see this HANDMADE gear! And to see if my hyperion could break it! The tranny itself is a well thought out design. Now it is just about bomb proof!

Everyone, including me, goes out and buys all the parts to make a crawler to fit them best, not this guy, he goes all out and BUILDS the sh!t himself!

Sure it is maxx based but everything about this thing is handbuilt!

Found the Second gear ratio, did some figuring...

When I tested 666's 3013-16, we first ran it with the 22 tooth at 105.14 Crawl ratio.

Wheel speed was kick a$$ but the crawlability sucked. It was too much load for the 3013.

Then we put a 14 tooth on, Running 165.22 crawlratio, and the wheel speed was gone but it crawled much better.

I think I have the gearing figured for the 3025, but real world may prove otherwise.

Also, The 'Chair got a new toy last night!

MIP's, I have 5 spares

Wheelbearings, I have not taken one of those out since I redid the rear axle with cut brakes.

The grade 8 bolt problem is solved aswell.

As for my diffs, like I said before, with 3mm ring gear bolts, I would LOVE to see carnage there. I have run 3 HP through them before with the jumbokongs with MASSIVE ABUSE. I have NEVER broken one since. They just have to be shimmed correctly.

I have never run a 1/4 scale servo, I read too much of gear stripping.

With the motor I used I would say the entire setup excluding the cables weighs about 2 ounces... its actually pretty light!

The motor that came on the thing weighed a pound itself, Just don't need THAT much power.

looked like a motor that would KICK @$$ in a LARGE powerboat!

Lock to lock on this setup is about one second.

I can not wait to get it!!!8)
Thanks again for getting them to build those beasts JRH!"thumbsup"

The brushless motors didn't do ANYTHING to my aluminum output gear so I am sure my tranny is up to the task!

That last scorpion motor liked to scream high R's so I let her buck @ 14.4v on the steps bouncing all over insano style... It liked it, It was REALLY PISSED OFF and I thought for sure it would break....I was impressed with the power... After 5 mins of full throttle assaults, satisfied that nothing was going to break, I tried to crawl slow. That was the end of the Scorpion. It loved the high speed, but low speed tore it up.

The Large Bearing is the Ticket to keep it together"thumbsup"

The axles...
Looking into Titanium CNC axle shafts for the rear cutbrake axle...
Might not be able to get my hands on titanium stock though...

Most likely the supermaxx 8MM titaniums with the 23mm hubs for the front. Also I will be modifying my front axle to be a high clearance hybrid design.

Still tying to find a magic ratio on SuperSteer v4:roll:

Currently: Tripple Metal Wormgear Reduction: 121/1 reduction
540 motor/ESC driven
One Inch Per Second with unknown amounts of torque!!

1/4" links in rear soon. No more broken jato ends!!!"thumbsup"

BEEFY METAL DRIVESHAFTS... THAT WON'T BREAK like the revo shafts Its been eatting.

By next Fall:
Friction Dig: Proportional Drag Brake/Dig Setup.

Smooth Operation, Fully Adjustable Shafty Stall.

Also Helps with Torque Twist as a bonus!!

Next Winter:

Good luck with your move WheelChair and family. Looking forward to seeing a brushless motor the size of a 12oz pop can  "thumbsup" Just kidding with ya, I'm curious to see what jrh found for ya.

I have the 3013 in my 2.2 and was having serious problems with cogging. But with some radio adjustments and fine tuning on my Mamba it has almost no cogging now.

By the way, how much does the Chair weigh? I know it is probably hard for you to find a powerplant that is comparable with other supers because they aren't made to take a hit like the Sherman WheelChair.

Power to weight ratio has to be difficult to figure out?

Can't wait to see more, when you have the time.

What circuitry did you use to power super steer? From what I can tell you amplified standard servo pwm motor control? Could you explain how you wired it? If you did what Im thinking you did then you could apply the same concept and build a forward/reverse no brake esc capable of being built to power almost any motor with almost any voltage.

I think you are talking bout version 2.0 I had at the bunny bash....
It was just a 645 control board running two 645 motors @ 6 volt.

It was powerful enough but with plastic gearing it had to be redone.

Right now Super Steer is onto version 5, I am waiting on some gearing, but it is run off a forwards/reverse speed control with no brakes.

If this version fails there is only one alternative, A Mamba 25 and outrunner from JRH for steering duty with a Lipo pack.

Sounds like my brushless motor is STILL a few months out... it will give me time to get other things ready for its power.

Out with the revo shafts, in with custom stainless steel slider shafts.

I have read through this project with drool at the corner of my mouth! Wheelchair is beastly! I dunno what kind of power you're planning to run through Wheelchair, but take a look a this bad boy. the Cyclon Elite 24 brushless gearhead outrunner (http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=CYLEL24). it puts out 1800 watts of power peak and can handle a maximum 80 amp peak current draw. it'll power Wheelchair just fine the Mini Elite Punch (speed 400 equivalent outrunner with a gearhead) could probably throw JIA's Ralph around like a rag doll, and that has the same can size as the outrunner that one might find in a 1:20-1:16 car

WheelChair
07-12-2007, 10:10 AM
Have you figured out how to stop the steering, or are you just gonna keep an eye on it and stop when it bottoms out?

I plan on building it strong enough so when the steering is at full travel it will just stall the motor.

I tried messing with the little motor and though I can get it to stop rotation. By disconnecting one of the wires. I can't get it to startup the reverse while locking out any further movement that way.

The only way I could figure on doing it electronically was to have limit switches swap two of the wires, causing the motor to reverse. I don't know if a mamba could handle that much load. Disconnecting a wire off the motor at load would cause a spike in the controller wouldn't it?

JohnRobHolmes
07-12-2007, 10:36 AM
swapping two wires while the motor is running would wreak havok on the controller. It would interrupt the commutation sequence and probably blow up the motor as well as the controller.

I say building it strong enough to stall the motor is the best bet. You cant hurt anything by stalling the motor, other than the gears and steering.

I am really looking forward to seeing this. I have had this idea for a long time now, and wonder just how powerful it will be. Is it gonna be rack and pinion style or just a servo horn on the output shaft?

WheelChair
07-12-2007, 11:23 AM
The total worm gear reduction is 242 to one.

Then, the final screw drive is three revs per inch.

Its is going to be insanely powerful I am thinking....

I need to build front steering knuckles out of aluminum that will accept the MAXX RPM size bearings.

Here is a Video of Version 5.0 of the Super Steer in action.

Still in testing, nothing is setup.

Subtracted one of the gear boxes to speed it back up!
Now at only 22 to 1 gear and 3 revs per inch.

Remember now, steering is only an inch and a half, there's more then 2 inches of travel right now on the unit.

Run off a 5 cell nicad instead of a 3S lipo. So A little less than Half Voltage.

Well if its not enough... There's always BIGGER motors.

EVERY part of the steering System is going to be beef.

I had previously run a pull-pull bike cable setup but there is a lot of parasitic loss with that setup.

Thinking of something like the Wheely King setup.
I had that idea before the Chair was built, before the King was ever around!.

I think those are the only ways to harness that much power.

Yeah??

Well theres a few line's YOU DON'T MAKE if you can't steer.

I would rather tear a moab off the rim then not be able to steer.

Just because I have all that power, doesn't mean I need it.

And what am I going to tear up exactly? My knuckles will be 7013 aluminum that i will build myself to hold up to the strength.

These motors are still not available.

The Fluxring, (Outside that spins) is so long on these large motors, the vibrations of crawling at low speeds tears them up quick.

These are a new line that has a third bearing on the flux ring that should take care of vibration, wobble, and the bearing failure crawling at low speeds causes.

The new bearing should hold the fluxring firmly!"thumbsup"

Oh hell yeah! Now that is what I have been waiting for. No reason to have a big motor if it dont last. We have found out that stators 25mm or longer don't work on higher voltages, they just tear themselves apart with a quickness. now that is some funny sh!t right there my friend . I think good old Copper Head needs to strick !! :-P

WheelChair
08-09-2007, 12:16 PM
Yes that is funny, but not the way you are thinking.

Copperhead is built for comps.

If it doesn't do better then the Chair at the nationals, something is WRONG!

What I mean by it is built to go where you can't is this:

The chair is built for Severe Duty crawling.
Not a 5 minute course, with limited drop offs.

Has copper head taken any 40 foot drops lately?

Naw, delrin doesn't like that noise...

Anyone backed over it with an XJ?

I would love to see a clod follow 3.5 horsepower, (peak) up a dirt hill or through a mudbog.

Follow me down a trail some time.

I'll bring the tow strap!

When you can't steer to make it THROUGH an obstical, I promise I won't laugh.

The Laws of physics dictate that you CAN'T follow.

You just DON'T compare apples and oranges!

Kamikaze

I'm up for it, see you sunday after the finals.

Naw, delrin doesn't like that noise...

Last time I looked it was all metal.

WheelChair
08-09-2007, 01:40 PM
No more Delrin links?

Well then I must apologize, I did not know you were all metal.

I am not trying to put you or your rig down man...

I am glad to see someone else has a beefy rig...

I honestly don't read Clod builds so I don't know what you have built.

I know I don't like clods but thats just my personal opinion.

They thrash around on the rock like a rag doll, totally not like a real Crawler. More like a little girl throwing a fit.

One good crash on a front tire bends or breaks off the steering arm.
unless you have something you built yourself for a steering arm.

Being all metal, your weight would have to be up there as well.

I seen 666's decked out all metal Clod fall 2 feet at a comp and KILL a new style steering arm.

All that fancy hardware and RC4WD let him down.

If you plan on runnin with me, I hope you built something stronger.

The 'Chair Was designed and hand built to be one of the most durable, strongest crawlers out there.

If you can't steer, you can't go.
Super Steer Proved that to me long ago.8)

I'll see you Sunday in Kane Creek!

Oh... and for the mudbog... You might want to bring your Jumbo Swamp Kongs, and spare axle shafts...

Sound's like we could have alot of fun trying to one up each other, thats the kinda wheeling I like to do. Looking forward to beating the snot out of my rig after the nats are all said and done. I guess we have 2 different thought proccesses when it comes to building trucks. Yeah I have robot servos, but I only run them on 6 volts so they stay cool, I had 2 5 1/2 oz outrunners on 11.4 volts that would flip a 25lbs concreat block off the top of my rig, but I took them off and went back to lathes just because I don't see the need to over power my rig. I'm running all aluminum axles with cvd's, why put a huge motor on them only to be right back were I was with the stock axles I was running 2 months ago. I know that my components cannot be over powered by my servos or my motors, so I can dog it all I want and know in the back of my mind that the truck will hold together. I will admit it was very hard not ro run 7.4 volts to my servos for 400+ oz inch of torque, and it sucked having to make the right desision and ditch the brushless motors in favor of a motor that couldn't break my axles, but all in all I am in this to win, and broke trucks don't win comps.
Now after the nats are over I can throw the brushlesses in and we can move some bolders if you want, I got 11 oz worth of outrunner in my tool box. That sounds good to me."thumbsup"

I don't want you to break your rig.
Looking at the pics I can already tell you right now.

Don't do it.

The quarter inch links are NOT going to get you there man.

Plastic rodends?!!!!
I thought you said you were all metal!!

I am talking about 10 foot drop offs ALL DAY LONG.

I'm talking about being so wedged, those quarter inch links would turn into playdoh.

Two brushless motors pull more of a draw then a single large brushless.
Are you running two packs?

Also I am running A123 cells. 13.2 volts

Have you ever run the Jumbo Swamp kongs in thick mud?

My Drive train is HAND BUILT to hold this motor AND Jumbo kongs.

Are you telling me that you are not going to break putting jumbo kongs and outrunners on??

Snappy snappy my friend.

As I have said. You are comparing apples to oranges here.
A Clod to a shafty.

And the fact you have to modify your rig to make it do everything my rig can do, the way it is...

If you survive the comp with out something broken and you wanna tug-o-war, I would LOVE IT.

But just leave the kongs at home, You do so well at the comps.
Don't wreck it doing what it was not designed to do.

BASH!!!

Did someone say tug o war? I'll hook up, I'll even throw on the 8 1/2" LST's if ya want, I'm not scared, I drug a 50 pound weight across the rocks in BC, dead weight. The 2 foot fall you saw where I broke a knuckle was not a rc4wd, those usually just bend, or strip screws out, not saying they are any good though.....

Crazy jumper, I can't beleive you get by with those maxx ends on your links, I can't get those to last in my little rockpile out back on my 2.2, let alone my super. But your style is differant from mine.

After I finished that, D came back with some Sunkist and I had to do more!
I tore down the axles like I was was going to a few weeks ago.
Both ring gears were loose and both pinions shot!
I had thought they should need to be replaced since they have served me well for many years including in the river for 38 hours and even way back to the river in Moab behind potato salad in 03'.

I beleive I only replaced a couple bearings in the diffs, other then that the gears are Ancient!

Think one of the spools needs to be replaced, the drive cup has it pretty chewed up.

The rear Cut Brake axle WILL be operational for nationals.

Great Googly Woogly...

Are those Currie Johnny Joints on the bottom links?

Probably the R/C world equivalent!
They are 1/4" rod ends I got from DeadShort!
1/4 steel mild steel links, rather bend then break.

All links, rod ends, and knuckles on the truck will be metal.
Waiting on a 1 1/2" piece of 6061 to build my front knuckles!

Steel toe boots will be required while this rig runs I think."thumbsup"

Its actually not insanely heavy. I would say MAX 25lbs fully loaded with everything including the two li-po packs.

4 A123 saved a ton of weight from 12 cells.

How are you re-centering the steering?

Its not going off sweet jumps n' shit....

Low to medium speed muscle is what this rig is about.

We don't need no stinking centering, I have a brain that can do that!

Seriously though, how may times has a bug flown in your face when your crawlin... You take your hand off the steering and it centers, knocking you off your line. Or when your out in the woods alone and trying to get a picture...

I just prefer a steering system that does not center. It does exactly what I tell it and nothing else.

I don't want my rig talkin back to me, telling me no when I say turn.

It's my beiotch!

At full lock it simply bottoms out the female end of the linear actuator and stops the motor. Turning the other way will unstick it quite easily.

It work's very well.

No misalignment spacers, sorry:-(. That's just a touch outside the intended application;-).
I've got WK/TLT/Clod parts scattered all over the bench in the garage. I think theres enough to get something rolling under it's own power IF I was motivated:roll:

Im loving the power and the speed is fast enough, but I dont know about that low speed control. I would switch to a brushed motor........but its your rig and I'm not gonna tell you what to do.

Someday I would love to do something similar but mounted on the axle. I don't quite have your fabrication skills though.....I need a lathe.

A brushed motor failed because it did not have the starting torque.
The outrunner design actually acts as a slight gear down.
I could have simply added another gearbox to lower the ratio but then it was more then 5 seconds lock to lock.

The next version is planned to be part of the axle housing itself.
That was the plan to begin with but the unit it too bulky to be on the axle right now. At least with the link design of the WheelChair's.

EvilEddy420 will be getting the first on axle version as he has a ton of space in his design. His was the first with the high clearance front as well."thumbsup"

WC is only the first. I plan on an all out Comp Tuber Super and 2.2 in the future. 8) They will both have 4 esc's and 4 outrunners.

Looks killer so far

I am only just beginning man.

After this, friction dig will be born!
(front and rear dig with a servo operated clutch/brake on the rear)

If all my shipments get here, this should be one hell of a weekend at the Colorado winter finals!
I'm stoked!

Gearbox Info:

Taken from drivers seat of a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited.
Picked it up rolled for a song.
Its the gearbox that controls the Tilt of the entire seat.

There are 2 of each box on each seat.

The gearbox I used has a ratio of 11 to 1, then the linear actuator is 6 Revs per inch. Both are metal actuator.

The gearbox that controls the forward and back motion of the seat has a ratio of 22 to 1 and only 3 revs per inch. One is all metal, one has a plastic female end for the actuator.

I really wanted to combine the two for 22 to one and 6 revs per inch, but the brushless solved the problems I was having with startup. "thumbsup"

Hope that help's and if you do something, you KNOW I want pics!

I will shoot some video of SuperSteer at work monday.
Couple bugs came up at the comp but they are fixed already!

Also, I said this was just one, of my two pieces of drama.
The second piece of drama took out an aluminum shock  during testing tonight.

Lets just say, I love what two horsepower  does to my 18- 20lb. rig!
Will there be a Supers Rock Race??!:?:

Today you will see WHY 1/4" Craftsman U joints will be needed for front axles!"thumbsup"

Another package of goodies arrives Monday!

Anyways, If you haven't seen a Giant 20lb 7th scale R/C Monster launch off a jump and catch some serious air, you are going to want to stay tuned for the second part of my two pieces of drama. "Super Power"

Stay Tuned!

Super got put on the back burner for a bit as I started the WC Micro.8)

There will be a thread started on it as soon as parts arrive.

There are a few updates however.

1.) 1/4" drive universal joint front axles and knuckles: (In progress)

2.) Project Kong Smoke has been changed to project Crusher Smoke.

Also, I think I vented an A123 cell on a full throttle assault.
I may be going to 5 cell A123.

More soon!

I been wanting to waterproof the Super now for a while.

Today I found some Mud that was begging for the Swamp Kong's and I have been dying to point this insane machine at some...

So this is what I came up with. "thumbsup"

*Everything is completely sealed below the intake and exhaust.
(Hopefully I don't flip it)

*Snorkel's are made from plastic braising rod tubes, a Mega Block, (like a huge lego) and toped off with film canisters.

*Intake cools the Sidwinder and CC BEC, while an exhaust fan pulls the warm air from the MMM

*A single Deans connector powers the entire truck.

*A single switch energizes the CC BEC powering the AR6200 receiver and a relay out of an old computer that turns on both the MMM and the Sidewinder. "thumbsup"

Mud was thicker then expected and not deep enough to have fun in 4x4.

So I flooded it out and souped it up while we were there today and it should be ready for good times in the morning! "thumbsup"

Found out late last night after the run that my trim was off and the Monster was not getting full throttle. I worked with it and got about 30% more go out of it. Also, I believe I ran the A123's below their voltage threshold too many times and have a weak cell. I have a video of a full throttle climb where one of the cells on the front axle vented and actually shot out a flame like a torch!!

can you post more detail on the 1/4" drive unis?

Stubshaft: 2", 1/4" Drive extension ground down to 5/16", shortened, drilled and taped for wheel bolt
Axle shaft: 6", 1/4" Drive extension cut to length and drilled for cross pin
Axle Joint: 1/4" Universal joint shortened length wise to be more compact
Bearings: 29/64" OD 5/16" ID sealed Rollerblade Bearings
Knuckle: 1" Plate 6061 T6 aluminum

Having good luck with the 1/4" MIP hybrid axles I built called MaxxelShafts, in the MAXX section here. Wheel pins act as killer hub fuses, saving the rest of the drivetrain from extreme shock.

The tooling axle might be saved for the 1/4 scale WC!

do you have any pics of what you have running now.
Thanks again

Here is the thread on the axles I have been using for some time now.
Maxle Shafts (http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126445)

I broke one because it was the first and I got a bad weld on it. but all the others have held fine. I actually granaded a MIP stub shaft with these.

The main things I have noticed on the design of these is:
1.) Good weld on the cup to 1/4" (Hard to not melt the cup and get good pen.)
2.) Right size hole for cross pin (otherwise it will wallow out the mild steel 1/4"

After that, the wheel pins hold up pretty well until you do something where there is so much load that something else should have broken. Then they act as a fuse, saving the rest of the drive train. A wheel pin is very easy to replace compared to a ring and pinion!!

Since I have had these axles in my rig, I have been able to do some amazing things.
Every time I needed the strength, it was there."thumbsup"
Every time I got crazy, the pin saved my rig from more costly repairs."thumbsup"
