View Full Version : King Bling rebuild has started.

After driving the King Bling tuber this past weekend I decided to revamp the rig a bit.
It performed well but I wanted to slow down the suspension movement and decrease track width.
The plastic-bodied shocks are being replaced with some aluminum HPI MT shocks (HPIA725) and filled with Mugen 1000 weight diff oil.
That's right - One thousand weight...No springs.
The track width was a bit wide for my taste so I decided to install some trusty RPM Revolvers (rear pede) narrowed to 1.3"
Once the suspension is worked out I'll make changes to the frame. I'd rather bolt the body panels in place than have to cut and replace zip ties. After I've made/tested frame changes I'll have the frame powder coated.

Yeah Yeah thats all interesting but I can't comprehend any of it because I my eyes keep ending up on your avatar.
Abouts how wide will the track width be with the narrowed revolvers?
Interested to hear how the shocks work.

We need before and after pics!
I'm sure this thing is going to turn out awesome, it's already one of my favorite tubers on here.
Let us know how the oil and no springs works out, I think you might have something there.

Me 3 on the shock oil. Kinda curious on that one. Kinda think it would be like 1:1 nitro charged shocks or something. Probably be cool. Can't wait for pics.

Just changed the front shocks for now. Took it outside and did a bit of testing in the rose garden. (Wife is gone, I can get away with it for now. "thumbsup" )
Definitely made an improvement. Need to work on the rear now.
I got the idea to run no springs while working on the Hustler. I figured that since I was blocking one oil passage in the shock piston that you could (in theory) leave both holes and just run a thicker oil.
The weight of the chassis is enough to keep the rig "settled" (no need for a spring to "retract" the shocks) and the 1000 weight oil just slows suspension action. There is no bump and jump cycling...just slow, controlled movement.
The actual whole axle droop is limited by a small strap at the center of the chassis, it's attached to the upper link.
MUCH better.
Now to do the rear (and finish up the wheels) and take it to the lake this weekend for more video.

What was the track width originaly?
JasonInAugusta
03-05-2007, 11:22 PM
11 5/8"
It'll be closer to 10.5" when I'm done with it. "thumbsup"
*EDIT* Finished up the front end.
Track width stands at 10.25"

No joke. In the video that thing look insanely wide. 10.25" is much better.

Yeah, it looked WIIIIDDDDE.
I had a guy ask what kind of axles were under my Super in the last video.
Wasn't a fan of the GC under the diff combined with the wide track....the narrowed rear Revolvers did the trick. "thumbsup"
I had a chance to swap oil in the rear shocks tonight - feels much better.
If the batteries were charged I'd take it out for a spin. Grrr...

Worked on the socket to ya style front dig tonight.
Jake had put a 14mm hex on the rear driveshaft but had no means of locking the rear axle. I just grabbed a 12 point 14mm socket out of the garage...

Jason, do you how much the rig weights ?
JasonInAugusta
03-09-2007, 09:10 AM
Eric, this one weighs 4lbs, 15 oz. RTR
I edited my last post last night.
While working on the truck I thought that simply attaching the 14mm socket to the rear half of the driveshaft would provide brake to the rear. That was after midnight and I was tired.
When I made (and read) the post I then realized that it wouldn't work.
Will have to make a unique setup to keep the socket in place on this one.
I got rid of the 600 mAh 5 cell hump style RX pack that was on the rear axle and put a 1200 mAh Peak Racing Mini-T pack on the front suspension links.
The RX pack placement is deceptive. When you raise the hood it's like you're putting the pack on the chassis. Reality is that it's on the front upper suspension link. "thumbsup"
Pics of the new setup. 10.25" wide now thanks to double-narrowed rear Revolvers. Still need to zip-tie the battery and servo cables to the suspension link and neaten up all the wiring.

I have a question for ya'...
Does that frame meet the 07 rules requirements?
It always looked killer... but now it's amazing! "thumbsup"

Thanks.
I had to look up the specs on 2.2 tubers:
-2.2 class tube chassis are allowed with the following restrictions. Chassis must be at least 8"long, 3"wide, and 3.75"tall, the roof must be raised from the main chassis to resemble a cockpit, and it must have solid hood, roof and sidepanels.
Yup! 8.5" long, 3 7/8" tall, 3.75" wide. "thumbsup"
Once I get the suspension and driveline sorted out the frame will get attention.
*EDIT*
I attached a pic of what it looked like "Stock"...If you can call a custom tuber stock.

Those batteries look pretty close to the right front tire. Are there any steering clearance issues?
JasonInAugusta

Unholy,
The axle/wheel combo made the truck look short and wide...it made the frame look tiny
Looks better now, I think.

They touch just a bit at full lock but there's enough servo there to keep the tires pointed in the right direction. When that servo fails (645MG) it'll get replaced with 400+ oz. :)

Good"thumbsup" May have to try that on my rig. Is 1000wt the lowest or is there some 800wt out there?

Sam, I just guessed at which would be best by judging how quicly the air bubble in the bottle of oil moved.
Not very scientific, but it gave me a good idea which to use. (Shock pistons also come into play here)
I took the truck out today with the new setup...KILLER!
This rig will never see shock springs. "thumbsup"
I love how it feels. The rear shocks are stock Wheely King units with stock WK pistons. I just dumped some 1K in them to run the same basic setup as the front. When the new HPI shocks arrive I'll build the rear almost the same as the front.
The little truck is pretty capable as it is, but it'll be better once the rear shocks are replaced.
Everyone that drove the truck today loved how it handled the rocks. The only complaint was clearance at the chassis (low belly) but that just took a little getting used to.
I'm ripping video off the cam now. Will have something up later tonight.

Rig looks to handle the slopes better. I like the mods you made. Where do you get the 1000 wt. oil. And are you using the BB's in it that I sent you? Oh yeh what's the orange package in the rear window?

Mugen 1K weight oil: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKKE3&P=7
The orange thing is a balloon around a RX pack that was zip-tied on for emergency use today. I took a CG hit by strapping it to the cage but as you can see in the video...it still did rather well.
No BBs in any of the tires.

Very nice wk! I think ill have to try some 1k weight oil.

Mugen 1000 weight is basically the same as 100 weight from AE or Losi. I know there shock oils are 250,350, etc.
Hope that helps.

Stripping the frame tonight.
Already removed the transmission plate for the pede tranny. Once I get the frame stripped I'll weld in a new tranny plate.

I have what may be a stupid question. What provides the rebound in the shocks? If you sit the truck on a level surface and push down on it, does it return to it's stock height or just sit there?
Otherwise, awesome setup!
JasonInAugusta
03-19-2007, 03:48 PM
Stock height is at rest. No rebound.

Some people are running very light springs under the shock piston just to keep it from totally unloading as well.
