Harley,

Cant thank you enough. Made one up today out of checker plate. Pretty happy with the result for a first time fabricator. I even went out and bought a dremel. Will post pics after we extend the wheelbase and get it in place. Thanks again for your time and effort, it is very much appreciated.

Shoot me an e-mail mike and I will get it to you in the morning. The JIA that was hosting it let registration expire.

Hey Harley, would you mind sending me a copy of your template? I'd appreciate it much! You'll have to bring your rig with you if you stop by the Springfield/Branson area, got several guys who're getting the itch to hit the trails down here.

hey guys. I am currently in the procces of making a servo mount but I cant for the life of me figure out how to cut it properly. how do I make it look so smooth I know alot of guys are getting them lazer cut and I know it wont be that nice but I would like it to at least look decent like the one off roader has and i cant get mine to cut that well. so can someone tell me how to cut it. because I was thinking about borrowing my uncles rotozip and buying a metal bit for it and trying that but idk. cuz I tried my dremel with a side scroll bit and it worked but the bit would dig and grab alot. so im not sure. maby if i mount a metal bit in there it will work.

THANKS

Don't make it too hard.
Time to go old school. You need a vice, hack saw and some files.

Clamp the metal in a vice and use a hack saw. Cut it close, but not all the way to the lines.

Now use a file to clean it up. If you are making it from aluminum, the filing will go relatively fast. If it is steel (ouch) it will take a lot more effort.

Take your time when you file and it will look really good!

yea thats what i was thinking (and this gives me another excuse to buy more tools "thumbsup") but yea i am making it out of allum. will the hack do the curves on the tranny or how do i do that? is all i want to know.

THANKS FOR THE QUICK REPLY

hey guys I have tried printing out the jowets rc template multiple times and every time it comes out wrong. so i was wondering if someone could help me out. when I print it. the template is close to being 1:1 but its not quite right. then when i go to print it it says something like 1.9 to 1 inches and Ive tried every different setting on my printer and they all either come out the same or giant. I have a dell aio 926 so idk if this helps. but I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem and what it is that I have to do to fix it

Just something I drew up so I can mount batt packs on both sides of the servo. This is just a rough draft, so it'll probably get modified. (I'm sure there are other designs like this out there)

I like it. Definitely different. How tight is it though? Any chance the servo could work it's way out of the clamp?

HndsWthtShdws

I didn't tighten the screws very tight (its only tapped 1/8" aluminum) and its in there pretty solid. I can't move it with my hands and I don't exactly have office hands. If it works its way loose I will scuff up the metal and servo with some coarse sandpaper and go from there.

If it does loosen up, you could also put dubble sided tape on the top and bottom of the servo and then clamp it. I'm sure that would definitely keep it in place.

HndsWthtShdws
02-22-2008, 08:11 PM
Double sided tape is a good idea; I like the idea of that little bit extra shock absorption that it would add. I was going to do it right away but the longest 4-40 screws the hardware store had were 1 inch, and they are perfectly flush with the bottom plate.

Thanks guys I now have.

1 Question though, could someone please give me some dimensions on the bta pdf file, I think it has printed smaller, and I dont have the truck just yet, the wife is holding it for my birthday.....

And I also need some dimensions for the clocking plate, maybe the total width in mm of each would be great!!

thanks in advance guys...

What thickness material are y'all using for these mounts? I made a Jowett's-pattern mount using .064 aluminum sheet, but it feels flimsy.

03-16-2008, 08:09 PM
I've made a couple from 1/8" stock and it is very sturdy. A little thinner than that would be fine.

HndsWthtShdws

1/8" aluminum here. Pretty sturdy and there's no need to go thicker.

I made my first servo mount from 1/4" steel..........good test of patience.

If your talking about links to JIA's site, it doesnt exist anymore. Not to worry, all the templates mentioned in this thread are uploaded on my skydrive: http://cid-4a947c0fd105ba34.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/WK%20Templates

Just click the big folder/world icon, click which template you want, click download, and then you can go from there. I would download the "All WK Templates" file if you don't know which mount you're looking for.

Are you sure that flimsy metal is going to hold the servo under strain - even if you put another piece on the other side?

Looks like that steering linages must have some binding in them as well - judging by the twist.

it should its brass from old trophys and im looking to get another thats real solid metal

HndsWthtShdws

Looks like if the metal doesn't bend the servo will simply pivot. I don't think two holes is a good idea for this application.

Another option is to make a link mount similar to this, but spaced back further:

Can someone please ask Jason to update his posts with the collection link? http://cid-4a947c0fd105ba34.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/WK%20Templates

It would save tons of time for people digging through 16 pages of replies... :)

Now the hard part is choosing which servo mount to use :)

I'll have to see how to modify one for the rear end, to drop the plastic linkage for the knuckles and convert it to turnbuckles like the Scorpion...

I think you would have to make one. You can get about any template and use the dif section of it then just draw out the rest so it mounts over the center. That's what I did back before they were available.Still using the same one just made it from thicker material than my first one. Chris

do a servo directly over the diff work any better?

do a servo directly over the diff work any better?

I think a servo mounted to the side would allow the chassis to sit lower, and the unsprung weight might help to keep that tires down (to combat the torque twist).
