View Full Version : Has anyone tried to build axles from seperate parts?
Today I was looking at WK parts on tower and found that they are selling the axles individually, for about 12$. I need axles for a scale build, and with the TLT disco'd I need some axles. But alas, I have a low budget. There is no way I can possibily spend 200$ for axles + hardware. So I was wondering, after the axle housings, what parts would i need in addition to the parts listed in the thread on making it a 4x4?

If you buy the new 4x4 from Tower now with the discount. You pay about $185. You get the 4x4 truck, with radio, receiver, speed control, servo, motor and tranny. You also can remove the standard tires and still have a nice set of wheels. Everything to make a crawler except your mods for length and any frame changes. Not going to get much cheaper than that and be worth owning. Or you buy the TLT kit and still need Radio, servo, receiver, speed control, motor and a better tranny.

I see your point, but I have a radio and reciever. Is the stock tranny any good in stock form? It seems from the shape to be quite hard to mount. What about the ESC? I know I would need a new motor for any serious work. The

WK tranny has been good so far. I have not tore into mine yet as I have not had any problems. I will say that in some strains/binds the tranny makes a clicking noise. It seem there is a slipper of some sort built into the tranny. Which for me has been good. I have not torn out ring and pinions like I've seen done on many TLT's. I have seen to much of them becoming 2 wd in comps to own one. YET, Well I guess I do own 2 but nether have been put together as I still have 2 TLT-1 kits in the boxes. NOT for sale!!!!!

i would love to own a wheely king but i cant afford it. and with a tlt it depends on what tranny you use compared to a wk tranny. with a xxx-t tranny you can leave the slipper just a hair loose, and it will squeal like a pig right before you break something so you have warning. a wheely king will be my next rig though. that will happen once i get a job. i currently earn money by doing most of the upkeeping of the house and yard work because my parents both work.

I think the 4x4 deal at Tower is the best bet for anyone.

the wk is not the best deal for me because it would be way more wasteful than buying a tlt kit. i have a radio, mamba max esc, and a xxx-t tranny. the servo and motor would not meet my needs, and i would only really use the axles and maybe the shocks. plus, i don't have the ablilty to fabricate a chassis and i dont know enough about link geometry and placement to mount wk axles to a chassis made for a tlt. like i said, "once i get a job the wheely king may be a good option." i think that hpi should make a wheely king kit because most of it would be wasteful excess of parts i would not need and i would be spending alot more money for alot of stuff i have no use for. a kit would at least spare the cost of rtr electronics. i love the wheely king, but it just isn't the most cost effective option for me right now without a job. and yes, i am looking for one.

I think if you were to build one axle just from parts you would be looking at $70... so maybe $140 total... I could be high/low, but I think it is around there.

I came up with $163 and change including bearings from tower you might be able to get bearings cheaper from Tammies but even then you'll only be saving $5 bucks or so, for a 185 rtr its a much better deal

Cheaper to buy the 4x4 WK and use the parts. Sell or trade what you don't need. I bought the 4x2 and it took several days and some digging to get all my parts for the conversion...spent too much on the parts too...got spares...lol.

well, the 4x4 one is $210 normally, so ya, $180 or so if you can catch some of the deals they have...
I can't see any reason not to buy the rtr...
other than I am poor!

i had the same problem waiting for the axles, so i just took out the back axles, measured them for a template, went to home depot , bought the same size solid rod and just grind it the same pattern. For the dog bone part, i had left over pins from other cars. Slide it in the hub to see if it fits. Then just drill a hole center of rod. total cost 2$ for two axles.
