how well does a stock 4x4 crawl?

I have been looking at the wheely king for a few months now and i would like a opinion on how the 4x4 crawls. is it a resonable trail rig that could be driven on small rocks and tree roots?

out of the box 4wd it is very top heavy and with the battery in the back it doesn't do verticals at all, but with some simple mods its a pretty capable truck

It isn't horrible with stock 4WD but you should at least lock the rear diff. Even when the front diff is still open it doesn't crawl great. Decent.

There are a few builds here with guys using the stock chassis to build crawlers...it's a great foundation.

as a trail truck it's good, but lock the diffs, reposition the batery, and remove the front brace, and your good!

Yes, but as a trail rig it works well with a little rearrangement it will crawl fairly well in near stock configuration. Locking the diffs and lowering the CG makes a huge difference.

It will work as either one, but if you're going to use the stock chasis, it's probly a better trail rig than crawler. If you want to build a tuber or something, then you've got crawler material.

You don't need much money. Just a little creativity. I've probly got $25 or $30 tied up in the stuff I used to make my links, and I only replaced the stock shocks because I let my 4yr old son drive it and he broke one of them. :)

i am getting a crawler together and i do not have alot of money. you just have to save a bit. a wheely king is a bit expensive for my situation because i am building a torision tlt off of the chassis EtypeR used on his turtle crawler (which competed quite well). my rig will cost a little under $200, but i already have a xxx-t i can get a tranny from, a radio, esc, and battery. the torsion chassis was free because it is just 4 metal plates and L-channel aluminum. but for your situation a wheely king may be a good option. just figure out how to reposition the battery to up in the front, lock the diffs with JB weld, and extend the wheelbase. i have heard of some people using threaded rod that you can find at most hardware stores, and so the threads don't grind on the rocks you just slide the plastic tubes from pens over the threaded rod links. threaded rod is pretty cheap, and then you just need some ballcups. i do not know how to extend the upper link because the info i know is for 4-link setups. maybe someone on here can instruct you on how to make an extended upper link. remember that saving takes a bit of time and patients. see if you can do yardwork for neighbors or other chores. i am sure you can find a way to make more money.

I got my battery over the front end by swaping the axles from end to end.
just hooked the drive shaft to the other side of the tranny, and reversed the motor wires so fwd on the esc still moved the truck forward. I made a servo mount plate for the front axle and used a turnbuckle to attach the servo horn to the stock tie rod. the servo wire to the radio was a stretch, but it helped the 2wd out a lot.

you might want to move the radio if you are going on top, but you might be better off trying to strap it underneath the chassis above the toplink

Worse than that, it would likely interfere with the steering linkage if you don't mount the servo on the front axle. I feel like for a number of reasons, relocating the servo is going to be one of the most important things you can do to make a mostly stock WK into a good trail truck or crawler. Now ask me why I haven't done it yet.

battery in stock place all it does is wheelie. heres how i mounted my battery. worked great, didn't interfere with my flex at all either."thumbsup"

Hey mang, im on the same road as you, no bucks. Its all about build not buy. i have just about, dare i say, finished my first build??? haha. It was actully really easy, and not to expensive. Ill lay some of the basics down for you. First off, gather $30 bucks or so, that will get you on your way.

Go to your local hobbie shop, and pickup some lower gearing, pinnion around 12-16, depending on you, and spur 91-96, again prefrence.,..

Pick up some alum tubing, and some 6-40 althread, those will be your links. also you need rod ends, grab 8 of those.

If you dont have j-b weld, get some of that. (lock the diffs)

It can be pretty capable without spending a lot of money.

You can "lock" both diffs for $5.
You can move the battery to the front for $7 (velcro & rubber bands)
$7 for gearing(pinion & spur).
$25 per end for a shaft, tubing, rod ends & allthread to extend the WB.

The stock electronics are fine if you aren't crawling in comps.

So about $70 in upgrades gets you a nice little trail rig.


When you lok into crawling....

A high turn lathe motor $20.
$30 for a TQ-3 & $75 for a sidewinder.
$40 for some losi claws or M3 prolines.

So another $140 for a crawler. Tack on another $30 for a homebrew dig setup and you will have a rig capable of winning comps.
