View Full Version : AX10 Scorpion Update

Axial

We have been working as hard and fast as we can. Our manufacturer has been slow getting us first samples of the plastic parts. We were waiting for some substantial parts to come in before we posted an update. Please visit this link for more info:

http://www.axialracing.com/ftp/Press-Releases/06-07/AX10.htm

We will hopefully have another update later this month, I am starting testing on the transmission and other related parts this weekend and hope to have any changes wrapped up in the next 2 weeks, by that time I should have axles to test as well.

Thanks,
Axial

cool, any idea on the time frame?

Originally we were going to be shipping late June, the revised time frame is early to mid July at this point. The major hang up has been getting first shots from the molds, once we have those we still have to do testing, so far everything has gone together really well, I just have to get it onto the rocks and put some time on the parts to determine if anything needs to be changed.

So, basically, best guess estimate is mid-July.

Thanks,
Axial

Hey Axial guy -

First off - big props for bringing this project this far. Your investment in this, in both time and money, looks pretty heavy.

What I'm wondering after reading your update and seeing the pics - is if you think you'll be offering the transmission for sale seperately? It's a very compact, balanced, well thought-out looking unit.

Hell, the axles look good too so far.

Any thoughts on sales of individual parts vs. a whole kit?

We will be offering the complete axle and transmission kits as well as individual parts at the time of release. Since we are still testing we are waiting to finalize the parts list on the axles and transmission before announcing the cost, but they will be reasonably priced.

We will be offering the complete axle and transmission kits

That's real cool - thank you.

Good thing I won't be ready to start building a new rig for a month or so, so I can wait for the release. Lots of other stuff to round up also.

I'm ready to tackle a tube chassis, and now this is the tranny I want to design it around. It's so bloody small, and the motor mounts at the lowest point possible.

Thanks Axial Guy. Good Luck with rest of your project, I hope everything goes as planned...

well that does it, I was thinking about Pre-ordering one and this put me over the edge, im now a few hundread dollars poorer. I had one question, Axial.com's press release gave very horrible measurements and chassis specs do you know what they are... ex. suspention flex, travel, axle width,etc...

i preordered over a month ago... the wait is killing me

but now seeing some real updates/pics and knowing that it is being thoroughly tested before its release makes me feel a lot better about spending my money for this long a wait.

I had the pleasure of meeting one of the "RC Guys" at a comp yesterday and he had mentioned that testing that is being done now with some Scorpions is going well and they're ironing out the wrinkles and spraying the bugs with generous amounts of RAID...

I, too, ordered over a month ago and I'm gettin' VERY tweaky about gettin' it...

Everytime I dream and crawlers are involved, which is fairly often lately, they're all ano'd green! Nope... It's not THAT big on my mind... hehe

It's confusing when you say testing "some scorpions" when this thread and the press release both say that currently the tranny is the only piece being tested, and that test is being done by Axial themselves. ;-)

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update.

Testing has gone well, no major issues up to this point. There are a few loose ends to wrap up but otherwise we are in full production on 90% of the parts. The ship date is still mid-July from the factory and should hit most stores towards the beginning of August.

Here is just a little teaser photo for everyone.

Thanks,

PS. It can articulate quite a bit more than shown once you trim the body.

WOW, I was lucky enough to sweet talk the pistol out of the Axial guys.
I drove the Ax-10 with the new compound tires at the 2007 Axial west coast championships. Anyone there will remember gates 3 and 4 on Saturdays 3rd course. Almost everyone was going around the top of the gates and coming down to them because the climb was so steep. I was able to drive the climb and clean clear the gate 3 from the bottom. WOW.
You guys are going to love this rig. It's a very nice working setup and the new compound tires flat hook up.

Thanks for the test drive guys!!!!!!!!!

We have been working very hard on getting everything completed for this project. We are set to ship the first production run on the 16th of July from our factory overseas, that should put it into shops mid to late August.

We have updated the press release with all new photos and the final parts list. We already have some option parts that we are working on for the kit and we will be getting more info out on those shortly.

First, stop making so many requests of Axial; let them spend their time doing what they do best and crank out those new AX10s!

To answer your background question, just save the picture. Then open MS Windows Explorer. Right click on the picture file you've saved it as, and select "Set as Desktop Background." Easy.

Anyone care to share the motor & esc set up they plan to run on their new AX10? I'm very new to crawling, and am curious to see what people's electronic choices will be.

Cool, thanks guys! How does that Mamba setup work in the water - occational puddles, running on rainy days, etc? If I have the $$, I'd will probably go brushless for more hours of play. Also, for batts, will you use just 6-cell NiMH's or will you dabble with LiPos? I can't wait to get mine running (once I convince the Mrs it's a reasonable expenditure  ).

The mamba max has a protective coating on the circuit board, to make it water resistant. The occasional puddle will be fine, but I personally wouldn't chance totally submerging it, but other people may have a different opinion(ORCRC crew:lol: ) I try to avoid water as much as possible.8)

There seems to be some confusion on it being a ready to run, I am not sure that we ever labeled it a ready to run, and must not have made it clear that it is a kit, you have to build it.

An ARTR would imply that it was a rolling chassis that was pre-assembled at the factory, which it is not.

Sorry for any confusion, I just want to make sure that everyone understands that they are going to have to completely assemble it before running.

If this thing is truely a $425 MSRP - don't you think that's a tad (well, a lot) expensive for just a rolling chassis?

I mean, you can get a Wheely King 4x4 RTR kit for $200...I'm not saying wheely king is as good as the AX10, but still.

If it is $425, if I want one of these since I'ma nitro guy (currently have a Savage w/ lots invested in it) I will have to buy: another radio, motor, esc, batteries, charger which will easily add up to another $300-400.

The $250 that Tower Hobbies says seems a lot more reasonable...but who knows if they're right.

I'm new to this sort of thing, I saw the Wheely king on the HPI website so I started watching videos on youtube, which then brought me to rccrawler.com, scale4x4rc.com and other such sites and now I want a crawler baaaaaad haha. This chassis looks sweet. But IMO not worth $400 :|

Yep. I've had mine pre-ordered since they came out - in fact, I pre-ordered it when the price was still listed as $299 on tower, when the price dropped I called them and asked if I would get the $249 price when mine shipped, and they took care of it for me - of course, one look at my order history in their computers and they know that they only stand to gain by keeping me happy :) - reminds me of the "how much have you spent on R/C" thread in the chat section. The answer is I really don't care to stop and think about it. Bottom line, this is a lot of fun, and as long as I'm not breaking the bank on it, it's all good.

But seriously - you're looking at a kit that you build, put electronics in and it's ready to go. Check out some of the other crawling ready rollers on the market - most of them are $500+, and more than a few are over $1000. I figure for someone just getting into crawling who doesn't have a lot of R/C experience and or a machine shop, this is a heck of a good deal.

Hi !

My first post in the forum.

I am waiting for that rig too (My First Crawler) ... (and I am from Quebec/Canada), the Canadian pricing should not be really far from the US pricing because of the current exchange rate ... but in Canada you got to add around 15% (2 taxes) to the pricing... so ~$250USD ... make that maybe ~280 to ~300 + taxes = 322 to 345$.

but then again .. no real pricing here yet, it should be available like they says : Late August / Early Sept. as per the Canadian distributors (Great Planes and Horizon hobbies.)

about myself : been in RC for 25 years, been racing ON-Road for 15 years.. I am a bit tired of being at the track once a week and having total weekly track time of maybe 30 minutes (6 packs), I am from the country side and my roots are OFF-ROAD (Dune Buggies and MT's), I dont have any current off-road related equipment except maybe running shoes ;-)

I have all of my equipment for the crawler is ready in a box : (2 x HS5925MG, 1 x HS5955TG (winch), M11 TX/RX, 38 & 4200's, Jeep Body, 55T & a 65T lathe motor, Fwd/Rev ESC,

Until then ill be reading the forum and awaiting the AX10.

None of the vendors here had it when I pre-ordered it. Besides, I've been supporting them plenty, and will be supporting them penty more, esp. unimoger and JRH. Those two have conspired to make everything but the motor and wheels on my WK weakpoints in the driveline. Since you're so hot on the vendors here, which of them has gears for my WK tranny? If they have them, they aren't on any of the websites they've got. I'm all about supporting the guys that help us out, but when I'm looking for something, I tend to be impatient, and the folks to speak up first are usually going to get my business.

Since I have joined this forum I have purchased several items from vendors here. If they did not have it here then I found it elsewhere. I pre-ordered before I knew about this place plus the price I got is very good, $249 minus $35 discount a total of $214. If a vendor here wants to match it or has a better price then I will cancel Tower and buy from them here. I like to save $ when I can. Maybe you are wrong with what you stated. We do look in the vendors section and we do buy from them.

Hi,

We currently only sell through distributors and their pricing is set. You will need to contact the vendor you are purchasing through to find out what their normal selling price would be.

The first batch of kits was shipped from our overseas factory on the 20th, it is usually 4-5 weeks before the dealers start to get them in, but we will be doing our best to get them out as soon as we get them.

so. how good is this thing supposed to crawl. is it going to be better than all of the other crawlers?

We designed it so that it would be competitive right out of the box. There will still need to be some setup and tuning required, but the out of the box set up performs quite well. The obvious change would be battery placement, as discussed it was done so that people can get up and running quickly using inexpensive batteries already on the market. It was always intended to have the option to use LiPo's or other smaller battery choices to mount on the front axle.

Thanks,
Axial

This is really off topic, Ill throw this out there and if you feel the need to continue this discussion, lets take it to pm so that we dont hijack this thread any further.

If they did a good job as a hobby shop Id buy everything from them. As it is I still buy as much as possible thru those guys, they are usually the cheapest in town. But that being said, its hard to support a hobby shop that wont carry anything decent. They stock tons of duratrash parts, and some traxxas stuff. Thats about the extent of the parts they carry. The only ESC's they carry are several duratrash models and a mamba maxx. Only battery packs they stock are some no name black shrink wrapped el-cheapo's. I wont even discuss their tire and body selection. Now on the other hand if you want stuff for an R/C Plane they have anything you would ever want, they stock the best of everything. Tons of engines, 2-3 aisles of parts, probably 40 different kinds of Lipos, you name it. The owner only really cares about one thing so that where he keeps his store focused. The only other place is our local hobby town and if youre not there to buy a Revo or a Blade cp then they could care less.

However it will take additional time to get from the distributors to the dealers, and then from the dealers to the customers, a long process I know, but at least some will start to get them possibly this weekend.

Thanks,
Axial

There are threads in the AX10 forum that give opinions, specifically BENDERS video thread. A darn near bone stock AX10 finished third out of 26 at our comp last weekend, and the driver (Dean from this board) only had a max of 15 minutes total drive time with the rig prior to the competition. Based on the components in the tranny I don't forsee any strength issues with it.

RCP has these in stock ready to ship today if ordered before 4PM. "thumbsup"

The Gears Are Plastic. As Far As Being Strong Enough For A Super, Im Not Shure. There Arent Enough Of Them Out There Yet To Know. The Quality Of The Parts And Kit Are Top Notch Though.

Figured I needed to post somewhere. I use to be into RC years ago, but am just now getting back into it, and since I am a crawler I figured I should be in the crawling aspect of RC too. I got my AX10 yesterday from RCP after talkin with several people from here in a game that I play online, and can't wait to get it built. From what I can tell, and what I have gotten done so far on it this thing is gonna be a great start in RC crawling. Thanks Axial, and thanks RCP."thumbsup"
