I know some people are going to kill me for doing this before wrapping up the Lovell rig but....
Shelly has needed a new cage for a long time due to many many roll overs and just plain pointless abuse but I could not bring myself to start over until I made a deal with the Devil. It is actually kind of fun to build two rigs at the same time so here they are, Shelly in black and the devils yet to be named rig in blue.
The frames side by side before welding. The only real difference between the two rigs will be in the cage work but much tuning and trial and error on the original platform has been carried into these rigs.
The frames are .5 inch steel tube bent, welded, and then cut in half.

The beginning of Shelly's new exo
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1134/dsc02091cf1.jpg
And here they are side by side. There is still quite a bit to do but the hard part is over. After the stingers are built they will be linked to the cage around the cab and then comes shock mounts.

is probably the best bet. They usually put them on sale every few months if you do not want to pay $60 for them. Also, the black ones are cool but do not come with windows or a good looking grille. You have to snag those parts from a blue one.

Anything new? Or do you work for a living or something?
I just ordered 4 1/4 scale servos, need to get the tranny parts all figured. Do you have any beef inside the Maxx tranny? Any good no pause ESC should work for the winch right, or try the servo board first? Should I be thinking Maxx shafts or Revo? And I need to get the shocks to you soon.

My workbench (wagon) is covered and surrounded by plants at the moment, I hate spider mites:x
I hope to wrap up the front end Friday evening as I think in my little mind it should go quickly.
Nothing special for the transmission and so long as you are not using some stupid powerful motor maxx shafts work great for me. You can run the circuit board in the servo so long as it does not over volt. I used a dead servo for my winch so that is why I went with a cheap (cheapest I could find with reverse) ESC to power it.
I have a set of savage shocks (the really long suckers) that I am using for mock up so there is no need to rush anything down unless you are using a different shock.
Also, do you have by chance any broken clod C-hubs floating around that I can hack into a carrier bearing?

Slugz,,,,
Could you take a moment to comment on the values of interior enhancements...It might be helpful to myself and Bender to better understand the importance of making the right choices for our future scale projects. For the objective of improving our overall scale performances?
My biggest concern is when to action figure and when not to. It always seems unfitting if the vehicle is not in use (static display) to have a figure just sitting there staring into space. Is it then necessary or do you recommend the removal of the figure for better static display?
One solution would be to build a exterior enhancement for the indisposed figure. This would improve the overall static display quality.
One possibility would be to build a scale drive in movie screen. Then all the scale vehicles could be stored with a more obvious purpose. To stay within scale it would need to be approximately 4' high X 6' wide. I thought you might set this up in front of your TV in the living room (pictured) but to create the proper scale effect you will need a much larger set.
Thanks in advance "thumbsup"

Stromin, I take it you had a slow day at the office:lol:
As good as it for scale performance for a scale at home setting you have to be very careful as things can very quickly spiral out of control, I can't even post pictures of what I have caught the chicken doing....

Perfect!! I like! The tubework is turning out very nice, especially the stinger! I think the travel is perfect and for high speed manuvering maybe thick oil in the shocks and soft springs which I have.
What about a wee bit of a shock sticking out of the hood??

SICK!!!
What about a wee bit of a shock sticking out of the hood??
It is fairly stable for what it is and could be better if I can move the lower shock mounts out on the axle.
I will see if I can get some shock hoops to stick through the hood but they will probably have to be fully extended at ride height
I think half and half would be best. Droop and uptravel. Well if it was fully sprung I could run xl's...... Stop it!!!
Anyways you can get a list of everthing I'm going to need to make it drive?
I have axles, shocks, tranny, a selection of Maxx and Revo shafts, servos (I hope...), All t's, not sure of the power plant right now, I have a couple of 45 and 55 turns for now. Umm, I wish I did not part with my EVX. What offset rims do you use? I have some older RC4wd rims that should work. What am I missing?

I will play with the front shocks tonight and see what I can do
as for a list to get this thing up and running
TXT axles
4 savage shocks (stock springs seem to be good)
one servo for steering
Emax tranny locked in first (at least for now)
4 maxx drive shafts (male and female ends along with drive cups)
Two motors of the same turn (I run 55turn lathes)
One speed control
One voltage regulator to feed the steering servo
One Y harness (will be used to plug the steering servo into the receiver and bypass the BEC)
The strongest set of wheels you can get your hands on (wheel hex is critical)
AllTs with full foams
Radio and receiver
That should be all you need to get this pig running. For the winch you would need another Y-harness and a simple on off switch to splice into one of the wires. I think both servos will be fine on the same speed control unless it is a piece.
I ran the first gen Ericksons and recently Shelly has been running axials so pretty much zero offset. I will be mounting up some new Ericksons tonight to give 'em a whirl but I would love to pull the wheels in a tad.

*says it in Borat accent* "VERY NICE!"
Looks great slugz. Nice stinger!"thumbsup" Those axles look perfect on there, very scale, they look almost exactally like Rockwell 2 1/2 tons. Is there no lower links, am I not seeing them, or will there be any (like shocks and uppers only)? Will you get much axle sway with your setup (if you run lower links) because those upper links look like they are pretty far out? Maybe not? And just curious, but is it at all possible to make a scale pinion brake for those axles that spins? All in all, awsome rig. I cant wait to see it done.;-)"thumbsup"

I have 3 first gen Ericksons.:x
The RC4wd rims I have are inset a little compared to the Ericksons, they might work. The RC4wd rims should be just fine so long as they can hold the tire. You you probably need to trim the knuckles so you might want to check ahead of time.

Are you going to put a cross piece across the top of the windshield and bottom?
slugzracing

It doesn't really screw anything up as the shock just moved up about half an inch and didn't really move side to side. I'll snap a few pics Sunday to show you what is going on with them.
Yes, there will be a cross piece in front of the windshield at the roof and the cowl panel; it will bolt in just like Shelly.

666, do you have a stock Maxx slipper assembly? It presented a clearance issue with the rear cross member and while the member can be ground down it will require a different link setup.

I also snagged the transmission mount plates from Shelly since I am out of good steel. The plate on the passenger side is larger to accommodate a future mount of a servo for shifting.

Friday night the chassis was quickly touched up, ground, and then painted. The drive train was then installed and the assembly began. Saturday night after getting back from dinner the electronics were installed and the test run yielded better than expected results. Sunday She hit the rocks and even caught the eye of our Japanese friend from RC world. I just wish he could have seen her done!
Fast forward to today and things are picking back up. I decided top keep things very simple out back so there is just a tool box (RX box) and the spare tire. Here is the tool box in its humble beginnings.

That isn't even OLD school:lol: Someday she will be done!
Patrick, you up for bashing Red Rocks on the 29th or the 30th? It would be killer to get some footage of Chelly!
I am down, I need to finish my new link design up front (3/8 solid aluminum) and thinking on making the rear long travel also, plus I need to rethink the panhand bar, I can't remember how to do it correctly......

666, you need to soften the roofline with a lighter and bend it flat like it should be. i had the same problem.

Ok here is a small teaser update...
On the left you can see the 9 cell battery and on the right you can see the winch spool and the ESC used to run the winch. I kept breaking winch spools so if this one works I will dye it black and call it good.
The battery is the result of seeing Chelly on 14 volts, I can hardly wait to drive it! Only problem I face right now is my Novak BEC is not supposed to handle this kind of voltage and the winch ESC cannot handle more than 7 or so cells:twisted: Time to order a Castle BEC from Holmes.....
And yes I know the front links are Allthread, that is on the to do list now that she should have some speed:twisted:

We need more pics though, those teasers are definitely not enough!
It's good to see the voltage upgrade, mine should be running a 3 or 4 cell a123, so it looks like we will all be able to baja around.

Hey slugz, quick question. How wide are your frame rails outside to outside?
I had to reassemble it a bit for these pics of the tires. What do you think?

Dang, those look soooo good!!
They definitely look better than the all-t's imo, but I wonder how the performance is compared to them?
Are they the soft's?
Let me know how they do compared to the all-t's, especially in high speed stuff. I was thinking they might be a little too skinny for high speed turning, but the all-t's didn't do that great either.
Let us know how they do."thumbsup"
Soft yes. I have really firm foams in them so they might do ok.
You guys like them better? I am not too sure about them.

I think the lugs on the crushers are too small regardless, making it look funny. I think it makes it look like a 55" tall 1:10 scale tire.
But I think the crushers look proportional to a 40" tall 1:7.5 scale (what the ranger is) tire. So I think they would look a lot better and in turn make them look a little bigger in comparison to the stompers."thumbsup"

It is tall because it has no weight on it. It sits alot lower with 14 cells, a Emaxx tranny, 2 motors, interior, driver, and various other things that make it complete.

Slugz built this one!;-)
It's running aluminum savage shocks. So far I have run 45 turns in it, 55's and some Mag Mayhems8) Not sure what I will run it as soon as I get it back together.
And I do not like the way the Stompers look. All-T's thank you.

Those puller motors would be awesome!!!!
They would definitely hold up to the torture (the rest of the drive train wouldn't though:lol:), but how would get them to fit? Flip the tranny so the motors stuck out the back? Wouldn't they either hit the seats or hit rear cage?

See those gears? Tranny gears 7075 and brass idlers UE Ultramaxx8) They are made to hold up to 8xl Fiego BL motors. TXT axles are extremly tough, not worried there. I guess Maxx shafts are the weak link-easy fix, Revo!
But yea there is not too much room back there for bigger motors, but I do have a hacksaw!!
