questions about the stock wheely king electronics

it will work for now but the esc has no drag brake. i used mine for a while, but now that i have the rooster brushless, i wouldnt go back for nothing

went to mamba 25 and bm9 from the crawler store.
because i dont want to break to much.
want a mamba max but need more $$$$$

so will the stock motor work fine? If I replace the esc with like the rooster crawler edition esc from novak? or should I replace the motor too?

The stock 27 turn motor and esc dont work very well together at low speeds. The stock esc gets hot and goes into thermal shutdown. Changing the gearing helps this condition, but changing the motor would be the best first move. I have used the stock esc with a 55 turn motor without any ill effects. I also changed gearing. Upgrading the esc will give you more features that are desirable for crawling like; no delay from forward to reverse, adjustable brake settings, drag brakes, higher input voltage, higher bec output voltage and current, etc. The esc will obviously cost more than the motor, so I guess it all come downs to budget. If budget is not a problem you have more choices like brushless motor and esc packages.

i would go with the mamba max and a 55t motor that way if you decided to go brushless you already would have to esc to handle it

I'm runnin a p2k2 motor and a Dynamite tazer 15t esc. the tazer was only $29.99 at my lhs. i'm workin on a trail/crawler, so i don't want real low speed. i'm runnin a 96/14 and the stock WK tranny. it does alright, still need to make it 12 1/2'' wb. anyway, the tazer works grate, and cheep!"thumbsup"

I would like to get a rooster crawler edition esc and a integy 55t motor. but I will use the stock stuff untill I buy the new esc and motor. thanks for your guys help very usefull info thanks.

Don't worry about the ESC for your first mods. It's spendy and most of what you buy can still be used after you upgrade your ESC (unless you go brushless). You FIRST mod should be a high turn lathe motor. There IS NO BETTER upgrade for $20. You should also get the lowest gearing you can squezze into the tranny (15/96 if I rememeber correctly).

my stock esc burnt up the first time i run my truck, thats why i got a tazer, i was broke and there only $29.99 at my lhs. you can go w/ a 13 if you have a 96, i have a 14 and could go down one more"thumbsup".

yup, I did pretty much the same thing. I've been using some 7 cells I had laying around since the start, and that made my stock elcectronics overheat quite a bit. The first thing I did was gear it down, but that didn't seem to help the overheating, every 5 minutes (or less) it'd shut down and I'd have to sit while my buddy kepy crawlin' (with his stock 6 cell WK battery). Once I got my 55T lathe installed, all my thermal shutdown problems disapeared, it hasn't overheated since. I also got longer run time out of the batteries.

If (when) you get a high turn motor, you may want to consider getting more cells for the battery (like 7), you won't have problems with overheating (like with the stock motor), and you'll be able to keep some of that wheel speed for bashing. You don't sacrafice any low speed with a 7 cell, but you can still put the hammer down if you want. My top speed is a blistering "fast walk", rather than just a "walk". :)

I recently tried to put a 15/96 combo in my WK. The problem is that the stock motor's diameter is too large. It hits the top of the transmission case before the gears mesh properly. So I put a 16/96 setup in and it works great. You will also have to dremel or drill out the motor mount to allow the motor to swing down further than the stock mount allows.

thats odd, im runnin a p2k2 27 turn i had layin round and im runnin a 14/96 with room to run a 13/96 with no mods.:shock: with no pinion on the motor, the motor shaft almost touches the 96 spur, still, its to fast with the p2k2. need a lathe but not a 55, still want some speed, maby a 35? what do you all think? thanks.

Your motor must be smaller in diameter than the stock WK motor.

probably. have you or anyone you know run a 35t lathe? a 55 is to slow for my trail truck but my p2k2 dont have the low end i want.
