Default My Little Build Thread (updated with snow pics)

Well, figured it was about time for me to post up my junk...

Still have some to do including getting better tires, converting the rear to full droop and the front to 50/50 travel configs. So far I am pretty happy with it. I run a MM speed controller with a crawlmaster and 3s lipo with a traxxas TQ radio and receiver. I mostly built it to play with on the trails with my 1:1, but it is fun to play around the house with too.

The wheelbase is stretches to about 13ish inches and I redid the rear arm set-up. I need to get a tape measure and and see where it sits exactly. (I don't do comps, so I am not limited to 12.5 inches.) There are no weights in the tires, stock shocks and stock shock weight fluid. With some weight in the wheels and a better shock config it should do even better.

I propped a dry erase board against my couch the other day to see how steep I could push it and keep the front end down. Depending on running start and how smooth I was it would do 70-75 degree's all day long.

The tires are BFG Krawlers... not sure what size, but I'm guessing 35 because he still has short arms. The wheels are just regular steel wheels, and I'm gonna guess they are 15x8.

Both look sweet man!

They are BFG Krawlers (35x13.50x15's) on 15x10 steel wheels. I also had them mounted on a set of KMC Enduro's for a while too.

I have it set up at a 13.25 inch wheelbase right now. I made the rear link myself, since there is not really anything readily available that I liked good enough to buy. I just "comp cut" the rear of the Jeep body and "flat fendered" the front of the Jeep body to make it look right at that wheelbase. The stock wheelbase is very close to the Jeep body if you would rather try to keep the fender flares, etc...

Thanks for the compliments on my 1:1. I have a lot of time and money in it. For those of you that know Tellico, it has been down every trail there over the last 2 years. There is actually very little "Rubicon" left in it as I run ARB's, 5.13 gears, and chromolly axles now. I still drive it on the road, but it is definitely not an everyday commuter with those tires on it.

RE SF SA, front & rear adj. tracbars, 3.5 inch springs, 1 inch spacers in rear, 1.75 inch spacers up front. My Jeep is heavy, though, so it sits at about 4-4.5 inches of lift. I relocated the rear shocks and welded up the rear tracbar bracket as well. Currie AR up front with the stock swaybar in the rear. OME LT shocks all the way around. I am sure I am missing something, but that is the gist of it. If you find a post from me on ROF, just click on the picture in my Sig and it will take you to the page with all the details.

Oh, in addition to that I have a JKS 1.25 BL/MML so I could make room for the Medic TT.

Default New RC News:

I added some weight to the wheels last night... I think I added a little too much, so I may do some adjusting on it. I also re-arranged the battery placement and electronic placement some. I will post up some pics tonight on what I have done. ;)

I love the 1:1. How long are those Krawlers supposed to last? (miles). Are they crazy soft like they say? I run TSL LTBs and was woundering how the tire compounds compare? The AX is lookin preety sweet i love the little strech u got goin on.

Why do people buy 1:1 Rubi's and then go nuts with mods?I bought a 2 year old 6cyl/5 speed and for the money a new Rubicon costs I built my Heep and had money left over to replace it with a 84 Toyota when I got laid off.Just Empty Every Pocket isn't the vehicle for me,too many city dweebs have them now and I like to be different. As I write this I just saw a Rubicon with at least 20 inch wheels, yuck.Awesome build though i am thinking of selling my TLT SW2 and building an AX10

Not sure on how long, but they are holding up surprisingly well... Remember, though, that there are two different compunds on krawlers. There is a comp. compound that feels like an eraser on a pensle and a regular compund. The comps (aka red labels) are not sold to the public. i really like them, though, and seem to be an extremely good trail/rock tire.

You are not the first to ask the question... I get it all the time actually. Lets see, why get a 1:1 rubi and build it? I guess it starts with the fact that you can take a stock Rubi, add 4 inches of lift, 315 series mud tires, a bumper or two, and then take it anywhere you want out of the box. If you plan on staying 315's or below, it is the better/cheaper choice IMHO. Especially if you want a warranty. And yes, many dealers will warranty them with 33's/35's on them as long as they are not overly abused. Once you want more than that, it is cheaper to go the other way with a regular TJ like you said. But with the Rubi package, you get 4:1 gearing and a regular output shaft of the transfercase. You get 4.10 gears and air lockers front and back as well in the diffs. Even the Rubicon factory rocker guards hold up OK. Nothing can touch them out of the box, and they get even more capable with only a few mods.

As for why I built mine so much? Natural progression I guess. Really the only thing left Rubicon on mine is the transfercase. Plus I like the fact that everyone seems to hate them for some reason. The whole gang that says "built not bought". LOL Well show me the guy that pulls his own metal out of the ground and makes him a Jeep and then I will shake his hand. Otherwise, everyone bought something at some point. ;) Mine has been upgraded to handle 37's which are in the future for me. It took the extra money to upgrade the factory parts to reliably handle the extra tire. I did it because I already owned the Jeep, why sell it at this point to rebuild a stock TJ?

Bottom line, I built it because I can. Other people don't have to worry about how much they think it costs because it isn't their Jeep. I bought it, put a better suspension/tires on it and wheeled it hard for over a year without it breaking. I wanted it to go further, so I built it right to handle the 37's for when they come. I enjoy TJ owners pretending I am not next to them on the road simply because my hood decal. As a matter of fact, I bet you would have said "nice jeep" yourself if you didn't see the hood decal and saw the parts list. Not trying to be mean or anything... just making a point. It is amazing at how much a sticker means to some people... LOL

Thanks for the compliment on my AX. It is a surprisingly well though out package. I have been impressed with it for sure.

Wheel what you got... whether a 1:1 or 1:10
