Shock Pop

Has anyone had any problem with the caps popping off of the Axial Aluminum shock tubes??

I spent about an hour this evening inverting the stock plastic shocks, and the caps popped off of the rear shocks within the first 5 minutes!

I've read several threads where guys have had their shock caps pop off, and I was previously quite smug in the fact that I had not encountered any such issues with mine while running them in the factory recommended fashion.

Anyone aware of whether or not I can switch to the aluminum tubes and get away with running them inverted and eliminate the popping issue??

Thanks!!

i have no idea about the aluminum ones but with the stock ones if you use just a little crazy glue that helps alot.

I hear that the aluminum T-maxx shock caps fit perfectly and that it should stop it"thumbsup"

I have yet to do this...

I recently encountered this problem after putting together my Edge chasis. I bought the Traxxas big bore caps which were $7.00 for two at my local hobby shop. (aluminum, part # TRS2667S or TRS2667) I put an 0-ring on the inside and outside of the cap and it's working %100 better. I've put it throught the ringer and it's holding strong and hasn't leaked yet. Knock on wood lol

Are you sure you have them bled correctly? I was told that there should be no rebound when the shocks without springs are compressed, otherwise the tops can pop.

Not to hijack, but how does one go about bleeding the axial shocks correctly so as not to have the aforementioned rebound? I just built mine, and the shocks rebound like crazy with no springs.... I'm only familiar with traxxas shocks that have the small rubber diaphragm to compensate...

i had a similar prob until i serviced the shocks correctly, i had too much fluid in them and i guess it created accessive back pressure on the caps.

How far below the top of the body did you fill to not have issues?

Trimmy 01-20-2008 11:02 AM

I leave mine about 3/16 to a 1/4 of an inch from the top but I'm droop so there isn't a way I have found to tell until they pop off. But the Traxxas Big Bore caps are a cheap and easy way to upgrade these shocks. "thumbsup"

i have my shock in the fully closed position when i put the caps on and have the oil so it's just under the top
if you put too much in when you put the cap on it comes out the top threw the threads on the cap

i've never had a problem with the shock caps poping even after i jumped it off a 2 foot ledge and stripped a lower link ballend, then kept driving with the link dragging and the axle going everywhere

DriftCrawler 01-20-2008 04:04 PM

I filled mine to the brim, but didn't get any leakage when I screwed the caps tight....Guess I'll have to wait and see.

hellbentrodder 01-20-2008 07:27 PM

I was told to fill the shocks to the top and put the cap on. Then back the cap off about 1/4 turn and slowly compress the shock to let the fluid and air escape, then with the shock compressed, tighten the cap.

Thanks, Hellbent, I'll have to try it that way.
