spur gear "wobble"
 

I noticed after putting my AX together that the spur gear has a slight "wobble" to it. it not loose but while rotating it moves slightly in and out on the pinion gear almost as if the output shaft on the gearbox is bent. I also noticed that one of my axle shafts has a similar imperfection. is this common or did I get a couple bent parts? Its not enough to affect performance but was enough for me to notice.

ah, an old pool hall trick. I disassemble everything and the variance is so small its tough to tell. I don't think its the spur gear because the nut does not rotate in place, it has a slight up/down movement. guess i need an R2...

FYI, The R2 a weaker than the Axial trannys. I know I wouldnt run one in my Ax10. you might want to wait until the R2D Heavy duty version comes out.

In answer the the original post, the wobble is from the plastic piece that the spur mounts on. if you replace it with a nice aluminum one from like hot-racing.com it will eliminate the problem. it was driving me bat $hit. We just released info on our new slipper clutch for the AX10 (AX30414). It is an upgrade for the current kit as well as as standard feature on the RTR. It is a pretty nice all aluminum unit that reduces the gear wobble and helps protect the drivetrain when using stonger motors.

You could try undoing the screws that hold the spur on and tighten each one equally, like half turn, next screw, half turn, next screw etc etc

i thought i was going crazy, thought I might have bent something by overtightening the nut or my eyes was going crazy, cuz I can't see so well g*da*mit. I can only see if I have my shoes and glasses with me.

I wouldn't worry about it unless its really bad. Is It like its off centered or warped?

its enough so it make lining the pinion with it difficult. the spur gear moves in and out on the pinion gear by close to half the pinion width.

so it warped looking.have you tried a different spur gear?

i don't have another one to try it with but I will be ordering the upgrade mentioned above. It would seem that the nut not staying on center would mean a shaft problem.

As a quick note, my spur did not move quite that much side to side, but enough to make a loud ocillation. Best thing to do is remove the spur and see if the mount is also wobbling, and if so, look at just the input shaft and see if that is wobbling. Mine was the mount, but the input shaft turned true.

yes, the noise is annoying. I will be installing a the new skid from TCS this weekend and am going to take it apart again.

after installing some heavy duty outputs mine is wobbly as well. I will check the piece the the spur gear mounts on. It has to be something simple, because the gear wasn't wobbly before I changed the outputs.
