Default Lipo Mounting

I am trying to decide on what size of batteries to buy for my AX-10. I do participate in comps, but also spend a lot of time just crawling for fun, and am trying to figure out the best way to get the most mah while keeping the truck comp-worthy. Mostly, I want to get rid of my stock mounted sub-c packs. I see three options:

1: Small lipo (1300 mah?) on the Axial LCG plate on the front axle. Low CG, weight is the farthest foward, but fewer mah by a bunch.
2: Large lipo (2100 mah) on a plate mounted on the front links. High mag, pretty good CG and weight distribution, but poorer climbing than #1. May interfere with the functioning of the stock links.
3: Large lipo in the stock location. No articulation problems, but the highest CG. Maintains long run times.

Obviously, #1 is the most comp worthy. That said, is there much difference going with #2 or #3 given the light weight of lipos? Is there a setup option I've overlooked?

Thanks!

I made a servo plate that moves the servo a tad forward and allows for a lipo behind the servo. The pic shows TLT but it can be drilled for an Axial.

How about large lipo, 4 cell 2200 mah in a comp friendly location, and a free mount to boot.

Get two small, cheaper Lipos instead of one large, more expensive one. Swap em out, and there's your longer runtimes.

It's a hand grenade wrapped in tape.

For the price of one low mAh Lipo, you can get two NiMh 1500 mAh saddle packs from Cheap Battery Packs.com.

You can get two of the CBP.com packs for $45 shipped. Mounted on the front axle, it gives a low COG, helps with forward bite, and helped to all but eliminate torque twist in my AX10. And I get around 40-45 min. of run time off of one pack.

Given the benefits gained with this option and considering the volitility of Lipo's, it's the only way to go for me!!

They're more expensive if you opt to go with 11 volts..... The 8 cell 2/3A packs run $25 or so, and the 1300 mah lipos run a little over $30 from Holmes. That, and there is virtually no voltage drop across the entire run time of the pack.

I use 3s 1000mah lipos on the axial servo/batt plate. I also use 8 cell 1400 brick packs in the same area. The lipos are the way to go, so much lighter and lots more wheelspeed. I get over 1/2 hour on 1000mah even with heavy throttle use. Im not worried about the "volatility" of lipos at all, i treat them the same as any other battery-charge them and use them

Cars are dangerous to, but we still drive them. Like anything if you mistreat it, it won't work right. I like lipos cause of the consistincy of the run and there smaller and higher in voltage if you want. I love the 16 volts my 4 cells give me, thats just to many NiMh cells to spread around.

Dude...4 cell...that's a good idea right there. I think I am going to build one tomorrow. I love 3 cell so 4 has got to be good. Big pack though..but as long as it doesn't interfere with anything then sweet.

Anyway, Snerd...go lipo, doesn't really matter the capacity as much just run it over the front axle, I think that's the most logical thing to do. I run 1320's myself and I get about 40 minutes of runtime with a 35x1 motor, slightly less if I am full throttle most of the time like running in the snow. I have two packs, and a backup 2 cell pack that I rarely use.

hey kaz, what are the dimesions of that battery. Im joining the dark side and was looking at this http://www.maxamps.com/Lipo-2100-111-Pack.htm pack when i stumbled on to this thread. Im donna ditch my saddle pack and servo mount/ 4 link connector (that i made outta delrin) and deffinintly have that stock plate to drill and cut up. so... i wanted to see if i could fit this battery the same way you have thanks
