I'm looking at many of these shafty builds going on right now and it doesn't seem that any have a mirrored trans. Does anyone do this anymore?

It's old man but still useful nonetheless. Helped me when I started out.

Good to see people searching for information. Surprised to get a notification for this thread.

Huh-I also was surprised to receive email...
Never did this mod as the AX worked OK. Lazy, couldn't justify the effort.
However the AX has been setting in a box for almost a year in pieces from the last time I drug out to play. I got the pieces to fix but after setting on the bench for 2 months, moving the parts around I finally packed it up and put in cabinet to clear my bench.

This bump has motivated me to gather up the pieces and get running again. As I need to disassemble to fix I could also pick up the mirror mod. Has to help, as mine gets older the wear & slop the lift gets worse. If it doesnt help lift it still probably work better than in pieces

Well, different places sit on the wrong side, or other side, so say it's at the front right would be better. First post picture shows that.

so i get you unscrew the skidplate and rotate it 180 degrees. but how exactly do you flip the motor to still be on the front side?

Umm stupid photbucket...post 158 also shows.
reversing output in gear box.
Basically swapping so motor sets on opposite side

This, stock motor on left

To this, motor on right
By separating transmission and flipping the input shaft so it sticks out other end.
Keep the case in same orientation while working on it, moving parts left to right, right to left.

pull spur gear

pull trans from motor plate

pop small cap off, set spacers to right (they also get flipped)

slip bearing off

Slowly separate case

Pull complete shaft and gears assy with bearings

Flip complete gear and shaft assy 180°,

Insert into left half of trans case with shaft into left side

close case

All the parts that were on the left side (screws, cap & motor) now go to the right
parts that were on right (bearing , spacers, spur gear) now go to left side

reassemble

The motor plate is also flipped-this is stock. Well, it doesn't flip but just moved to opposite side of trans

Side that was against motor/trans now on opposite side
-

As you noted,, skid is rotated 'cause the holes for trans now on opposite side. No changes to motor required.
Not a miraculous mod but it helps.
