Here's what I did with 8 cells.

Works pretty well, I get the better part of an hour of solid crawling.

I had a hard time getting my soldering (misspelled sorry) to stick to the battery, does it have to be a special kind or something?

Did you use fresh batteries? If so you have to sand a little spot on each end. Use electric-friendly flux to help the solder stick. How hot is your iron?

That and you always apply heat to the face of the battery then add the solder. The hotter the iron the better as you want to get the surface hot fast and then cool quickly so the heat doesn't soak into the cell.

It really helps when you have a hot iron, I did not get the solder to stick onto cell with my old 30w iron so I bought a 60w one and now its child's play. You just have to watch out not to overheat the cells or you will destroy them. But actually with a hot iron the whole process is faster so the cells heat up less.
