ladder style frame you can make yourself easily with hand tools. A tuber requires a welder/welding etc. You can go to the depot and score enough aluminum to build a frame for less than $10 if you want the satisfaction of building your own. If not you can buy something from the vendor section for short money. You can even get one out of plastic if the toy look is your thing

OK, Two questions, Do you want a comp rig?? or Do you want a fun rig??? OK, I might catch some hell about this but in my personal experience, A tube chassis crawler may look cool as hell but generally lacks the performance that a TVP (twin vertical plate) chassis has. I have been in a few comps and the tubers just cant compete with the likes of even a stock axial chassis rig! Granted it all boils down to the driver to a point but if you are looking for an all out comp rig, Go with a regular Plate chassis. If you dont really care much about winning comps but just want to have a badass looking rig, then go with a tuber. Tubers look cool!! But during a comp, when a tuber ends up upside down on its top, Its done! Someone NEEDS to make a tuber with a rounded top to assist in some type of rollover recovery.

You can make either chassis yourself, The tubers generally require more handywork! But I'd rather just buy a prebuilt chassis like a DMG or something similar. But for me and my rig, DNA Slingshot all the way!
