I'd love to put some of these on my racer, but apparently I dont have the tools to make these work right. Anyone else having bad luck with these?

A rear wheel axle from a Tamiya M03 M-Chassis car. Make sure you get the steel version, and not the aluminum one in the picture.

The shaft is 5mm diameter, so just grind down the flange to 5mm, then use your broken stub as a jig to drill the rear 2mm hole for the gear cross pin. The shaft is the exact same length after grinding down the flange. Makes for a quick fix.

A huge thanks for the tip. I broke a stub and these axles with your mods worked out great and they look much stronger

My fix for the drive cup/axle engagement problem is kind of hard to explain but I will try. I replaced the bearing at the end of the axle with some washers and shims that move the axle out a little and allow some side to side play in the axle. If you try to shim the axle out and keep the bearing it will bind when turning but by using the correct washer/shim combo it will allow enough play to not bind up. I will try to get some specs on the hardware up latter.

Overall I am really happy with these knuckles. I am not sure if it is the extra clearance, the extra width, moving the gearing to the axle, or a combination of them all but my rig just seems to work so much better now. I can pull lines that I could almost but not quite make before and my buddy with a losi can't come close to keeping up with me.

Dang, them r wonky portal axles. Volkswagen finally gave up on them, too, tho.

Taller tires are cheaper...way. But don't LOOK as tuff and purposeful as a set of geared hubs.

Got a set and experienced all the issues others have had.

Plastic rear Cs snapped right off with just a little binding.

Aluminum front Cs kept spitting trunion bolts because they had corroded threads. The sheet metal screws wouldn't hold in the plastic axle housing either.

Worst - every little movement of the Cs caused the dog bones to come out of axle stub balls.

I solved the problems with the Cs by getting Axial Racing aluminum Cs.

The axles I moved outward a little by removing one of the three O rings and putting a 5mm washer between the lip on the axle and the bearing. I lost one of the washers so I used one of the O rings. That worked even better than the washers. At some point I'll replace the other washers with o-rings.

I've been wheeling it hard for a couple of days without breakage. The axle clearance is great. The gearing is even better. It crawls over everything.

It does have more torque twist and on the wrong side. I'm working on that. COG wasnt a problem. I just lowered the chassis some more. It's about as low as before at the belly.

Where did you put the washers?
Thanks

There is a flange on the axle shaft that rests against the outer axle bearing. I put the spacer between that flange and the bearing. The end of the axle shaft doesn't engage into the locker as far, but I haven't had an issue with that end slipping.

The axle fix worked great. The rest of the problems arising from the added torque and leverage has done me in until I can get replacement parts. I took a tumble and landed right on the wheel at just the wrong angle. Broke the stub shaft. Emailed 3racing but haven't heard back.

The Cs needed upgrading. Then the axle ends twisted on the axle. I need to find a way to upgrade the axle so the ends can take the added twist.

I can't see spending $100 per axle for aluminum axles and keeping it a shafty. Is there a MOA that can run the 3racing portals? The Hot racing one looks like it can, but I'm kinda worried about the build quality and axle problems. The Bully axles look like they have different Cs. What about Bergs?

I switched back to the regular hubs while waiting on parts. The torque twist is just as bad, but on the other side.

I was running these on my Berg.

Go back a page and you'll see it fitted up.

Why would those have anything to do with these knuckles?

Not all knuckles work with the beef tubes, because they move the bearing out a little to get the proper amount of material for the threads.

It looks as if a bugaboo in the design puts those O-rings in the package:

The kingpin holes are too far out from the cases.
Look at the space between the kingpin bosses and the cases, it's a mile wide,

While the stock design is a small gap. See the simple error in their work? There does not appear to be any need for the change in feature, other than track width getting increased. Which was probably a design goal here, one that was taken too far.

I've recently designed a whole front axle assembly, so the borked geometry leaped right out at me.

Pretty cool if they can fix the durability issues.
