Default Axial trans to r2d Question

Okay, before I get flamed, I did try to do a search, and my brain got numb, so here goes: I am trading my stock axial transmission for a rc4wd r2d unit. Are the 2 transmissions geared differently so that I need to change the gearing I'm used to running, or do I continue to run the same spur/pinion I've been running? If I need to change, what do you guys recommend? Thanks!

yup, the R2d is a different gear ratio, and different pitch, so your pinions that you used on the axial tranny will not work.

I found the R2D to be silly slow compared to my axial based rigs with the same motors. (that was a brushless at the time, but dayamn was it frigging slow...)

get some pinioins from RC4WD, i would say BIG ones, but that'll depend on your motor and driving preferences.

R2D is geared very low...they have a gear ratio chart on their site to give you the specs with different pinions.

You can only change pinions...no spur gears.

What motor are you running?

Gear Ratio Chart:

8 = 30.375 9 = 27.000 10 = 24.300 11 = 22.090 12 = 20.250 13 = 18.692 14 = 17.357 15 = 16.200 16 = 15.188 17 = 14.294 18 = 13.500 19 = 12.789 20 = 12.150

Thanks guys, I forgot to say that I'm running a Goat system on 7 cells with the 18.5 motor. My tranny came with the following pinions: 8,10,12, and I just opened it up and found it has a 14 in it now. I kinda like not having to have an exterior spur anymore! I was pretty happy with the stock axial gearing thanks to the Goat's high torque and wheel speed, so I'd like to stay fairly close. I will check out rc4wd's site for that chart also. Thanks again!

I had a Scorpion HK-2221-12 brushless in mine with 9 tooth, Mamba Max on 8 cells, and it had plenty of wheelspeed, but not enough torque...it would cog / stall. Had good start up, but the motor is just a little too small for comp crawling.

Your motor has more torque so I'd try the 10 tooth..could probably use the 8, but might be too much torque.

Being brushless, it should have wheelspeed with almost any pinion.
