Default optional battery tray?

Getting my first ARTR and will be using 6 cell stick packs. Is the optional battery tray worth $20+? ... or could I make my own 'boxes' to sit on either side of the servo (to make a level surface) and strap the battery on top of the servo?

It will sit really high on the front. If that is your only option maybe you can only weight the front tires and place it over the rear axles.

thats what I had to do before I got saddle packs. I took a peice of tupperware, traced the stock battery tray and cut it out. Then I lined it up with the holes on the top of back axle and used some 3m screws to tighten it down. Took my dremel and with the cutoff wheel I made 4 slits for the velcro straps and *viola* eazy breazy tupperwar battery tray!!

so is it worth it? no not really. If you plan on making it permanant, a bought one would look better, but will perform no better than one you made.
