A quick update: I've had to think really hard how I wanted to do the roof and hood. Metal would be awesome, but might test the limits of my fabrication skills. Plus, thats a bit of weight up high, which is not what you want. Rest assured I've got something in the works, and should have pics up later this afternoon.

So I was weighing my options on what to make the roof panel out of. The same 3mm aluminum would be kinda heavy and mess up the COG a bit, but would look killer if I got it right. On the other hand, I could go light (and easy) with some polycarbonate or something. Since I wasn't sure, I found some scrap Lexan and tried that first... I whipped up some simple mounts using aluminum angle and ended up with this. Pretty easy. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad with aluminum...so I tried it out on the hood first... Blammo! It looks killer, time to make a roof! First I cut a strip of aluminum about 3.5" wide, and used my rubber deadblow hammer to contour it over the case of my bench grinder. Then, using the lexan as a template, cut it to shape. A whole bunch of fitting and filing later, I had this... Thats a big chunk of metal. I figured some holes to match the hood would be what it needed. Here they are laid out... And drilled... A bit lighter, though I don't know that I'd want to comp with it. I'll probably end up keeping the lexan lid and make a hood to match for the more serious crawling. While I was at it I added a front and rear support... |

So whats left? Not a whole lot. Still have to decide on my side panels, though they will probably be aluminum as well, but much thinner. I also need to hit Fastenal for some screws to keep everything kinda the same. Right now there is a mix of 3mm and #4's. I'm really liking the look of the roof with the natural finish. I may take a scotchbrite pad to the hood and get rid of the shiny. The contrast is pretty cool IMO. Other than that all it needs is some electronics and a test drive. I'm not one to toot my own horn, but for something that kind of started out as a goof, it turned out pretty kick-ass! Though I'm a little scared to weight it...lol. |

So the trip to Fastenal today was pretty much a bust. However I did manage to snag some thin sheeting for the side panels, which are now done. All thats left is some refitting of the hood and roof, install the electronics, and hit the rocks! Unfortunately we got about 4" of snow and ice, so the rocks aren't going to happen for a while. However, I am going to get some good pics tomorrow when the light is good as it is supposed to be sunny(ish). For now I will leave you with this...
