Default New battery and motor?

I have been running my crawler a lot lately and have started to see myself needing more power and longer run times. I currently have a 55 turn motor and a 7 cell saddle pack style battery, that is 8.4v and 1500 mah. I was looking at a 35 turn holmes hobbies hand wound motor, an LD Racing behind the axle steering kit which would get me better approach angles and is set up for a lipo battery that would keep my center of gravity down. This set up will not work with my batteries so I have been looking at a couple 7.4v 1300 mah LiPo batteries. My question is will this set up get more more low end power and will a few batteries have a good run time? Will I be able to run this with my stock ax-10 speed controller?

Bump. I know this isn't 100% axial specific but is anyone running this set up?

I run a JPH 37T handwound on a 2cell Lipo with my Stock Axial ESC. The 35T will give you more wheel speed, but a little less torque. If your saddle pack is mounted on the the axle, that's pretty low CG.

I might be confused on this, but what does the turn mean on the motor? I don't need a high wheel speed because I do a lot of rock crawling, so I need low end power. Isn't that what a 35 turn motor is for? What is a 55 turn for? The center of gravity on my rig now is ok, but if a lipo can give me more run time I would like to switch from my saddle packs to lipo.

the lower the turn# the faster the motor id suggest the Homles Hobbies 45t hand wound motor, it will produce a lot of touqre! and have good wheel speed with a 2s lipo, id suggest the Holmes Hobbies 1300mah Lipos too i have one and LOVE IT! its smaller than my other 2s 1300mahs and has a higher C rating

So when using a bigger motor and battery, do I need to be worried about my esc and radio?

The higher the Turn# (35, 45, 55...etc) the slower the wheel speed, but your torque will increase. When I went to a 2s lipo from a NImh, I did have a slight increase in power but is wasn't until I put a superior built motor (Holmes Hobbies Handwound, Tekin Handwound, etc) that I saw the biggest increase. I think, the motor makes all the difference ( As a one item purchase ). I would recommend searching through this forum for info on the different batteries and motors. I have and still do search through this bastion of RC knowledge for all kinds of stuff.

I would also watch some vids on you tube and try and figure out what kind of driver you are. Some guys like gobs of torque and run a 55T or higher and like to be very technical, others run a lower turn # and use the increase in wheel speed to get through some areas. Also, if your crawler is a boat anchor, you may have to stay with a higher turn motor....

Just my .05 cents worth.

I am leaning towards this 55 turn motor, but will I have to change my ESC or anything if I swap this in? I need torque and power, not a lot of wheel spin, and I think changing the ring and pinion if my motor is too low, because I think the 45 turn will always bee too high. I did get the battery but I have to go to a friends house to extend the wries and solder the connections, so I have not tested it yet.

That motor will drop right in. If you are going to run lipo, you will need to add a lipo alarm to your stock ESC so the voltage dosn't drop below 6 volts or it could damage the battery.

I run the Novak Goat crawler brushless system and i have 2 2000mah maxamps 2s lipo. i get a lot of run time out of them (45min-1 hour usually). i have a parallel connector and if im expecting a long crawl ill connect the 2 for 4000mah.

I have a 35T Holmes Hobbies Handwound and it is about the best motor out there. You can run it on the stock esc, but you will want to get a different esc eventually with a drag brake. The stock esc doesn't have a drag brake. I run mine on a FXR with 3s Hyperion lipo.

You metioned that you don't need wheel speed. I beg to driffer. You do need wheel speed in order to do dig manuvers. Yes you do need a lot of torque for crawling, but my 35t HH has more torque than you could imagine. Get the 35t Holmes motor, you won't be sorry.

X2 on the HH 35t!!!! Also, get yourself a Tekin FXr, so you get all of its silky smoothness, and you can run 3s lipo.

Hmm you do bring up a good point about speed, and I just realized I was looking at a 35 turn motor and I called it a 55 turn doh. I don't run a dig and plan on keeping it a rig with drive shafts and no rear steer, for now that is. I have a 55t motor on there now, but it's not hand wound. I just need more power!!! An esc with a brake would be nice, hmm so many options. Does anyone else make a good ESC other than Tekin? I think I have heard someone talk about a mamba, what is that?

The top esc's out there are the FXR, Mamba Max Pro, and Holmes Hobbies BR-XL. The Mamba Max imo is way over kill. I went with the FXR mostly because of its size. It is about half the size of the others.

If you are needing more power that motor is sick! I had the same 50t axial motor you had. The HH 35t hand wound is smaller, stronger, smoother, faster, better.

You won't be sorry.

Castle creations 1/10 sidewinder is a good esc too.

Wheel speed is just as important as torque 35t is the way to go. However I would suggest 3s lipo if you change your esc
