Every one has seen BWD new Nightmare-S chassis. I may be new to comp crawlers, but simple, clean, and to the point. Always a winning combo in my book. And being my first comp build Ill take all the ease of building and use as possible.

We recently restarted SincityRCRC for comp rigs and something to do on the weekends not running scalers all over Vegas. Most of us were converting Wraiths to shafty rigs with parts we had laying around or within the club.
But I am always up for new parts and toys.

So like every build, start with a pile of parts. All these parts were going into my Class3 scaler build. But I had them on hand and knew this rig would be more than worth it.

I am going to use this first post to keep track of parts and weights.
So far I have not weighted anything nor have I tried to shave weight. Most of this is built from parts on hand to get it up and running ASAP. Then I will start shaving every oz possible..... Why? Why the heck not - sounds like fun.

Front Axle:
RC Bros ally tubes
Stock front locker
XR10 shafts

3.5in big bores - short miniT pink/orange springs
BWD front axle plate

Rear Axle:

So what do all these parts make?


Gotta love the power of a typin' box, better than video editin'....
But before that - I got a little bored and used my super spinning machine (lathe) to play around.
Stock gears on stock lockers thrown into the lathe. I could take more off the thickness and the Dia. But Im not sure how much more off the Dia.

You can see there does not seem as much of a gain in the AX10 case vs the AR60 case. So this trim down gear is going to go a little smaller and get tested in the scaler before I trim a OD/UD gear set.

But the gain in clearance under the axle case would be a major bonus to this Portal guy.

This thing is relaxing compared to custom scalers....

Throw all your parts in a CrackerJack box and shake shake - Well thats how Gramps did it.


The axles are straight forward. And BWD front axle plate - man I love these things. It slides over the servo mounts - very clean. And I can already see upgrades and custom mods coming.


This lil puppy will be going zoom zoom real quick.

The front plate is by far the nicest and most well thought out design I've ever seen .... I'm extremely impressed

I agree, I've seen other that have caught my eye even as a scale guy, but this one trumps them off the single fact of being able to mod it to achieve almost any setup.
More on that later.....

So I spun up links - all ally. Quick and easy for a starting point. I am a dumdum and misread Dons text, so I had to miss match rod ends to get the lengths right.

Nice JJ, wish I had a lathe to make/modify parts. What tire wheel combo are you going with ?

Let me know what you want spun up - I'm no pro, "Barn Built". But I can get it done.
Old school SLWs - Stock for now and I will lighten them up later on.

These photos are crap but I took them quick this morning before leaving for work.
I want to lower the front upper links another hole, and I am using VP razors on the rear for shock mounts. But I am really leaning toward Bulldog chokers. The shocks just seem to leaned over for my taste.

These are the best 2.2 tire I have for now. So they were a quick and easy for this weekends comp.

Hey check that out - Im not the only one that dremels down rear chubs.


Well - RPP and RCbro didn't let me down. Gearhead 1/8 SLW spacers, longer SLW hubs, and RCBro steering arms.
Things have changed since this photo - but Ill use it for reference. You can see thw larger Traxxas hubs on the rear - Those with 325 SLW hubs and 1/8 spacers helped me get the Pitbulls off the servo. Once I get skinny Comp tires, I can suck it back down.


Here is my final link setup. The front looks like more separation than the rear because I have major bent lowers. I still think the lower needs less, but We shall see tomorrow.


ANd I can't say it enough - This front axle plate is baller. You can see even without shortening wires, It all tucks up nice. And this is with huge Traxxas shafts.




And final weight - not to shabby. Can't wait till to start lightening it. But Im wondering if i even need too. lol



Lipos are charged, GoPro is charging, and Rig is packed. Steering is less than stellar but will do for now. See how it is on the rocks in the AM!

The rig did WONDERFUL!!!
This is the first time I've have driven a comp rig vs a scale rig, and saying how quick I put it together..... I couldn't have asked for any more.
It was stable to the point, everyone was commenting.... The guys know me, I am not afraid of any crazy lines. And we had one or two that I did not think I or anyone could.

My tires and electrics did not like me under a bind at times, but even without true tuning it settled and flowed from one flex to another without effort.

I got some video and photos but work has been crazy this week and we have our scale comp this weekend. So as soon as I can get this edited - Ill get it posted.
Really cant wait to keep tuning this sexy Nightmare!

Has anyone used a grub screw locker and had it cause bind in the axle?
It seems like my axle shafts are not perfect and such is causing a bind that then takes it toll on the motor and ESC when the truck is in a bind.


On a good note I have put about 2 dozen packs through the truck. I deff have a few tuning things to do this weekend.

I use locking lockers front and rear if you look at my cases you see the 2 holes drilled ...it's for the exact reason you're talking about I've had binding and loosening ...with the access holes I can rotate the locker and adjust the set screws

So in a nut shell - I need to play with where the grubs tighten down till it spins freely?
When is someone going to make a removable Diff cover mod for AX10 axles......... To many ideas not enough time!
