I run a vxl I had originally got for my tc4. I have it geared 16/87, normally with a 2s lipo but when I feel like a good laugh 3s.

It crawls rather well considering its a sensorless motor and open diffs.

On my scaler I now run

stock 27t Axial motor
12 tooth pinion
3s 1900mAh 30c

I can creep with the best 55turns but I still have decent clean-out power with the 3 cell. It's not blazing fast but it is fast enough for an 8lb scaler!

Budget minded, you can pick up a sidewinder used on here. Normally around 40.00

The sidewinder looks good but running a 3s would I have to run a BEC with it?

Yes, you have to run an external BEC if you want the system to operate correctly.
