If it was the battery that was plugged in backwards, you just fried the ESC.

Wow...

What electronics do you have in it (ESC, RX/TX, motor)?

Sounds like one of the following:
- Reverse lockout on the ESC
- TX EPA got moved
- ESC lost programming and needs to be recalibrated with the TX
- Stuck brush on the motor preventing it from going in reverse.

With everything soldered up the correct way does the ESC still work?

WOW, that's a little off topic don't you think, let's focus on the reverse issue first. Just kidding, could the reverse in polarity have blown the FET for reverse? I'm still an electronics noob, I would assume the whole esc would have shorted, is it possible that it can have a partial failure?

It doesn't state which esc your using, if its the new Ae-2, could it be a possible fix within the software? Maybe the brief surge un-did some settings, its a long shot but who knows.
