Just get a WK diff kit, it is a direct fit for Axial axles.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but couldn't you just remove the locker inside the differential housing and then reassemble?

I would also like to know how to do this as well...

No because you won't be able to transfer the power to the wheels. The shafts would just spin inside the case.

You are correct sir!

HPI sells the diff gears by them selves, they are around 10 bucks.

The spur gear is bolted to the diff housing, inside of that housing is an aluminum slug that is keyed on both sides to accept the axle shafts, this is what transfers the power from your diff to your axles. It is this slug you'll remove and replace with the diff gears.

Axial axles are fairly easy to work on, just take your time, use the exploded views. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can still down load the kit build instructions off of Axial's site, if you use those you shouldn't have any problems.
