I would use the 87t spur factory and a 14t pinion. unless you want a little more wheel speed go with a 16t pinion. Thats my .02 for what it is worth.

Ok well I installed the fx-r esc with the 55t. I like how smooth everything is but I think I want just a little bit more wheel speed. Is 16 the biggest pinion I can run with out getting anything to hot? I've only had one other eclectic Rc usually run 1/5 scales.

What's your battery setup? That can give you some more wheel speed without changing the spur pinion combo.

As of now I run a 1500 2s lipo thinking of going to a 3s if it can handle it safely

3s will give you that wheel speed. Just get a castle creations external bec and you will be good.

I disagree with the findings thus far. Here are my happy settings.

35T motor - 16T pinion - 87T spur - 3S battery

45T motor - 18T pinion - 86T spur - 3S battery

65T motor - 20T pinion - 86T spur - 3S battery

I prefer a good handwound motor so I can get the lowend torque and control...but I will not sacrifice my top end. The 65T motor I was using was just a lathe motor from RC4WD, and it did ok as long as I had a good size pinion gear on it.

As Casey posted you could go to a 18t or even 20t pinion. you will start to lose bottom end torque. The only other thing would be a higher rpm capable motor. 55t are great bottom end grunt motors.

damnit. i thought this was a give away...

55t machine wound? 87/20 on 3s is fun, but I'm a fan of wheelspeed, so i'd go 35 turn motor oon 87/20 gearing...

HH 35T torque master 540 pro is a beast! Plenty of wheel speed and torque. I use the 14 p and 87 spur. Overdrive front gears and under geared the rear. If I reverse and stab in forward it pulls front end off ground 3-4 inches and if I go forward and stab in reverse it will about flip over. I run 9.5 oz in ea front wheel and 3.5 oz in each rear and still has plenty of motor.

If you are looking to turn those wheels fast it is the way to go. I think at first you will have many emotions .
