Default 80 Spur, 2S, Axial Stock 55T Motor.. what pinion?

A friend has got a used AX10 with an 80 spur and a 20 pinion.

He wants to use the Axial 55T stock motor for the start at 2S.

Will that work at 80/20, or should he get a smaller pinion or larger spur? He fears to overheat the motor.

Small Pinion / Large Spur...

will give you slower speed, more torque..
So with a 80t Spur , I'd go for either a 14t / 12t / 10t Pinion...
Stock it's 87t Spur / 14t Pinion...

Just remember to get the right pitch when buying your pinion gears..

Large Pinion / Small Spur...

Will give you faster speed, less torque..

So 14t pinion standard? I got my rig 2nd hand with a 20t 87 so I only now it this way. So a smaller pinion would give more torque/ less wheel speed? Whats the size down from 20t Ive only seen 9, 12, and 14 advertised.

I'd go for one of each......

In my Ax ,
I run a 21turn Ansmann Drift motor with 54t Spur / 14t Pinion... 32 Pitch...
This allows me to still have slower crawling torque and enough speed for bashing about..
I'd tryed 12t and 17t Pinion ...
12t was great for crawling ,but not much speed..
17t was good for speed ,but had very little torque for crawling..

A 55t motor on 2s will be really slow. The 20 tooth pinion should be just fine.

How is your friend planning on using this rig? If he's looking to do some slow speed crawling, check the motor frequently...that's a pretty high setup. If he's overheating, then lower it down. Like Manning said, with that motor and battery you might be OK, but keep an eye on it.

Sorry to hijack, so my rig has the 87/20 combo on a 980kv brushless outrunner on 3s (so its never going to be an allrounder) since Ive gone to the UD/OD combo it almost seems to be down on pep. So is the pitch Im looking for 32?

Thanks, folks.

He is planning on doing some rock crawling, for fun and to see if he likes it enough to maybe go MOA and invest a lot more money.

I think a good plan is to try the 80/20 setup and watch the motor. If it gets to warm, a 87 spur may solve it.
