AX10 Class 3 scaler Bronco build, cont'd
 

Last November, I got an AX10 Scorpion RTC. Since then, it's endured much transformation, and ended up being a class 3 scaler. During this time, my LHS started a rock course (thanks Tin Soldier). We have been having informal "run what you brung" competitions each month. Now that all of us are getting acclimated to the crawler scene, specifically scalers, we plan to start having normal scale competitions in October. With more serious scale competition on the horizon, I feel it's time to start a new and more serious thread about my rig.

This is what I started with last November:

It has a X-Trail chassis, about half a dozen steering mods (maybe more), a servo winch, Hilux fender flares, an aluminum bumper and stinger, rear underdrive gears, mixed droop/compression shocks, and maybe some other stuff.

In 1:1, some of these old Broncos had a top that did not run clear back to the tailgate, and instead separated the front cab and the bed, like a regular pickup truck. I plan to go that route with this, do a drop bed, and mount a spare tire in the bed. Then hopefully do an interior cage, add interior, and a driver. Then maybe some lights.

Thanks, me too. They are Proline TSLs, slightly used. Also working on getting another set of AX10 wheels for the spare.

Little interior cage work and a soft top would look sweet.

I like the soft top idea.....that might be in the future.

Yeah, the tires are on their way out. All but one, for a spare.

If you look closely in the following picture, you can see the clear plastic I cut from a strawberry container to serve as a template for the new bed floor. I'm not 100% sure what material to actually use. I have some thin sheet metal lying around that I'm thinking about, but I wouldn't mind something lighter. Any ideas?

They make those almost paper thin cutting sheets now that are made of tough plastic and come in white so you could dye it but i dont know for sure if it would be exactly what you need..... or you could just get a thin sheet if aluminum.

Where do you buy that stuff (the plastic)?

You could also pick up a small sheet of 1/16" lexan, I picked up a 2'x2' sheet fairly cheap at my lhs. This would be clear so it could be painted to your liking.

He is talking about Styrene. The plastic white sheets. You get it at hobby shops.

Also, shouldn't this post be in Class 3 scalers instead of AX10 Scoprion? I know it started life as that, but it's not that anymore. ;-)

Ryan, after I had already started this post I thought about putting it under class 3. I might also put something there, not sure yet.

Material for the drop bed:
After talking to you guys yesterday, I remembered two old roasting pans I was supposed to throw away but kept in my garage, just in case I needed some sheet material some day. They are made of pretty thin metal, and I am hoping that it will be light enough for me. I don't have time to get to my LHS within their business hours this week. Going to try to tackle that today, time permitting.

Shoe goo is good for putting that metal together. :)

To hook the metal together rough it up and use jb weld. Works like a charm. I dont know how to hook it plastic though. I like that you are adding the drop bed. It will look sweet. What are you going to do about your rear shock towers though?

I cut the metal for the bed yesterday from the roast pan, but it was too heavy. I really wanted to work on the body, but didn't have time to go to the LHS. I hacked up a clear plastic dishwasher soap container. It's about the same thickness as the lexan of the main body. I cut the back of the cab, used masking tape to hold it in place, and then used clear liquid nails for adhesive. Hopefully when I take the tape off it's all good. Planning to use the same material for the rest of the bed, and a CD-R case for wheel wells, then paint the bed black like bedliner. As for the shock towers, I was just going to cut holes and let them poke up through; I thought it might look cool :)

when I drop bed my tundra I will mount the shock under the frame in the middle (shorter shocks maybe). Seen quite a few like it.

That would be a good way to go. I would need much shorter shocks on this rig. It would be cool though, if that works out on your rig "thumbsup"

I didn't trust the adhesive alone, and wanted something strong to attach the bed floor to:

The screw heads on the outside of the body are less than ideal, but I like the support that piece gives. I hope to paint the screw heads the same color as the body so they don't stand out as much:
