Haastnooit's AXR10 2.2s NCD SuDu1 / SuDu1 FL

The AX10 Scorpion is the first crawler I ever had, I got it a few years ago … and it was stock for quite a while, then had a shorttime flirt with a Hotracing chassis … but luckily she ended up as nice UGC Fastback 2. Then a bad thing happened to my AX10 … I got myself a XR10 and went MOA MAD, totally forgot about shafty’s.

But now my attention is back on it since I stopped racing other types of RC cars. I don’t know yet which way this thread is going to go, it could be the build of a new rig or a rebuild thread/introduction of my Fastback 2. Either way I decided she was in need of some nice wide AXR10 axles front and rear. Sole objective as everybody knows, to improve the steering by a (roughly estimated) bazillion gazillion percent. I used the Creation fab premium tubes to make these axles happen, and took some pics during the proces of installing them.

Creationfab premium tubes installation

Step 1 – Shorten the axle housing, flush with the nub on the housing.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps56d790aa.jpg

Step 2 – Remove the bearingstop on the inside of the axlehousing.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3777c5de.jpg

Step 3 – Grind down the nub and ribs on the side of the axlehousing a bit so the tubes can slide over. Make sure the fit is nice and tight so take it slow with the grinding.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps677a263b.jpg

Step 4 – Insert the tubes and line up the holes. Secure the tubes to the axlehousing with the suplied screws

Update rear axle coming up next "thumbsup"

Here are the specs and pics on the rear axle ...

AXR10 rear axle

Axial AX10 axlehousing
Axial AX10 Diffcase
Axial AX10 Diffgasket
Axial AX10 HD locker
Axial AX10 UD gears
Axial XR10 lockouts
Axial XR10 axleshafts (2x short)
Creationfab premium tubes

Mods:
- Axlehousing mod (post 1)
- countersunk XR10 lockout screwholes
- shaved XR10 axle shafts

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps87589f55.jpg

It is not totally nescesary to perform this mod to the XR10 lockouts, but when I did this on my XR10, I thought that it looks much nicer then with a buttonhead. It has some sort of “factorylook” to it, when the screws are installed. Perhaps the way it could have been stock … lol

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps326d01fd.jpg

To get the XR10 axle shafts to pass through the tubes, you have to shave down the collars next to the tang. Below some pics with stock long XR10 shafts to compare.

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps65aae72b.jpg

I still have to drill the holes to fasten the lockouts, but here is a pic of my fully assembled AXR10 rear axle.

Your bazillion gazillion percent improvement, Is that an approximation, or just hard cold fact?

I am more than sure that it is the daggum truth!

Thanks Itty "thumbsup" I hope this will help others. When I was reading about the XR10 mod, I found usefull information scattered around several threads. But not always illustrated with clear pics, so this is my contribution to taking care of that

It is the daggum truth .... I got a real nifty angle measurement device I use all the time. I don't know where I got it from ... but it says "manufactured in Dr.evil's secret lair" on the back though

re: Haastnooit's AXR10 2.2s NCD SuDuOne

Well you have to have a front axle as well, so here is the laydown ...

AXR10 front axle

Axial AX10 axlehousing
Axial AX10 Diffcase
Axial AX10 Diffgasket
Axial AX10 HD locker
Axial AX10 OD gears
Axial XR10 C-hubs
Axial XR10 knuckles
Axial XR10 steeringplates (zero ackerman)
Axial XR10 universals
Chaotic Crawlers XR10 Ti bent tierod
Creationfab premium tubes

Mods:
- axlehousing mod (post 1)
- universal mod

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...pscaccacf8.jpg

After carefully doing the mod to the universals on both my XR10’s, I really did these up good. Now they are the smoothest set of XR10 universals I have …

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...psf810e1f5.jpg

The front axle is not completely done yet, I have to finalize my steering setup and still have to mod the knuckles, drill holes for the C-hubs and some other odds and ends. But here it is a pic of my fully assembled AXR10 front axle.

Great write up an a hell of a ion explaining it..

It's amazing the diff in how smooth the stock uni's can be with a little work on them. I have done it to 3 maybe 4 sets of them now. It's a very crucial mod to do for any steering over 45* with these.. IMO

re: Haastnooit's AXR10 2.2s NCD SuDuOne

Thanks but what do you mean with ... " a ion"

I agree with the uni mod, afterwards they are very mucho smoother throughout the whole cycle and you are rewarded with more possible steering ... crucial indeed when you want to max out your ride

I ordered a new AX10 transmission today, guess I made my mind up and am going to build a new rig 8). I am now officially on the lookout for a new chassis, and had a quick look around RCC and came up with these options, not sure which way to go yet:

- Kush 2.2s
- SuDu1
- DIY chassis

Any suggestions ? Also better 50-50 or 40-60 ?

I know both Y-town crawlers and Chaotic crawlers have chassis' coming out, but those will probably be more pricy then I am willing to spend. But you never know. While I wait for the tranny, I will try to find some 3.5" shocks and look in to chassis options ...

SuDu One "thumbsup" From what I've seen they are great performing chassis... The Kush would not be a bad decision though either...

Yeah, the SuDu looks very capable and cool "thumbsup" You did very well designing this chassis. What do you have in mind ?

You are right about the SuDu1 .... and I like the Kush as well. I asked Chris if he could make a CF version like Rcbro's. But he was not eager to do so for a single chassis ...

re: Haastnooit's AXR10 2.2s NCD SuDuOne

Shock choice

I went through all my spares and leftovers the past days and gathered up two possible options as for shocks.

Option 1 is a set of Traxxas 3.5” bigbores, running Losi mini-T front springs. On the pic below the front springs are flying the “missing man formation” as I got both sets of pinks on my BJ4 right now. Also have the Dlux standoffs for mounting on the chassis …

Option 2 is a set of Axial plastic SCX10 shocks, running Losi mini-T rear springs and MRC silver springs. At this time I only have one complete set of the rear springs, as silver is in use, leaving me only with blue and green to choose from. Therefore I ripped some springs off the MRC and added them to this option. I probably should better get an extra set rears though …

http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/...ps90049012.jpg

I am thinking of going with the SCX10 shocks initially, because of the light weight and the possible preload adjustment. Regarding smooth working there is not much difference between the two imo. What do you guys think ?

Oh an does anyone have a spring rate chart of the mini-T and MRC springs ? I cannot seem to find one …

Here are the Mini-T rates,

The only thing I have been able to find on the MRC Spring rates is Soft and Very Soft.

Thank you for your detailed write up on the XR mod. Couldn't of been a better time, I was about to tear in and do it. It really answered some questions I had. Keeping the subscription to this thread warmed up. Much appreciated.

Youre welcome dentonmac "thumbsup" Always good to know I could help someone out ...

Your picture is not showing, but I copied the url and saw it ... thanks. I was looking for a official list by Losi, but apparently it doesn't exist. You know that is the one list I found also, those are testresults of a user on the Losi forum, found here and summary below.

mini-T front springs (LOSB1117)
pink (soft) - 0.86
red (medium) - 1.38
orange (firm) - 2.04

mini-T rear springs (LOSB1119)
silver (soft) - 0.83
green (medium) - 1.52
blue (firm) - 1.69

I was hoping to find out where the MRC springs would fit in ... guess I will have to keep on looking.

If you send me a pair I'll measure them on my scale with my spring compression jig! :)
