I'm happy with the arms, but there's always room for improvement. The original contact patch was kinda small against the c-hub, and started scarring it after some backyard abuse. So, back to the fab shop. I essentially copied the old ones, but extended the inside edge. Now the arm fully contacts the c-hub, squarely, across the whole back edge. It's a much more positive stop that won't damage the hub anymore.

Finally got around to cutting the Axial stub shafts off. They won't be catching on the rocks anymore. Ended up cutting about 5mm off both sides. Before After |

Kinda lame update, but some may not know the trick. I don't know who takes credit for coming up with the Liquid Plumber trick for removing anodizing from aluminum, but it works awesome. I had the tranny out to replace the damaged 93t spur. While it was all apart I figured I'd ditch the last bit of green from the original AX10. 10-15 minutes in the solution, and it was all gone. A bit of cleaning and buffing, and voila. Before After Last edited by MRCrackhead; 04-22-2014 at 07:58 PM. |

Such small detail, but still a big improvment on the overall look of the rig, I like it If now there were a similar easy way to remove the color of the Mini T springs... |

Sorry about the terrible photos. Best I could manage here in the motel. I've finally made all the links, without mock up spacers. Getting psyched about the comp this weekend. Threw in some offset ends on the uppers, to buy a bit more clearance on the electronics. Everything is close, but it all clears. EPA's are 116, 114; so it's very neutral steering. I think the rig is ready, hope I can drive it. |

My bias was a bit off, and I wasn't happy with the recovery of the rig. I needed more weight out front. With the wide axle, and narrow hubs, there isn't much room. So I hand filed a notch in a pair of RCBros weights so I could stack one more on the inside. The bias measures about 61/39, now and it recovers much better. Unfortunately, I'm really close to 4lbs now, so I need to address the overall weight. But, the comp is tomorrow, and this fixed the problem for now. |

I'll tell you what, this rig pulled some sick lines at Rausch today. I can't wait to see it in action tomorrow during the RCrocs comp. Awesome job Kevin dialing this rig in!

So I made it to my first comp this year. 1 reverse on course #1 Perfect course #2 Perfect course #3 With the club of insane drivers I run with, that was only good enough for 2nd place. WTF.....right?!? Haha, what a fun day. The rig is running very well. I've got a few ideas for tuning it a bit better still, but I couldn't be happier with the outcome of this latest build/upgrade. Thanks to EPARCCrawlers Club for an awesome day of RC wheeling, and watching the 1:1 rigs do some totally insane stuff at Rausch Creek Offroad Park. |

Superb job today Kevin.. Driver and rig really came together! Front axle/steering setup worked like a charm. The whole dam thing.. I wouldn't worry about weight anymore, it's perfect how it is. |

Thanks Brian. Great job with a top three finish for you as well. Your "work" on course number one gave me hope that there was always a way out. There were so many pitfalls and sketchy areas on that "modified" pro course. Crazy. Quote:
It was a fun feeling fighting for the top spot today. Short of the third course, which was not so bad, the other two had many opportunities for errors and drama. I drove much better today, despite my lack of "feel" for the rig, than I have before with a well known setup. Maybe.....just maybe.....I'm starting to learn.

This might be the best thread on the entire forum. So many great ideas and it reads like a tutorial. I keep reading and re-reading. Keep it coming!

Thanks guys. I've enjoyed building this rig.......most days......lol. I've gotten about 90% of it wrong, and 10% of it right. Thankfully, the 10% of my ideas that actually work, have made it a very capable crawler. Now to practice my butt off, so I can keep up with it.

A while back I built an AR60 axle so I could run the steering servo behind the axle. I needed to narrow it a bit, but didn't want to cut one side only. Needed the space between the link mounts to fit the servo. So I narrowed the hubs Then I shaved a bit of each tube end. Seemed like a really good idea at the time. Unfortunately, the single screw didn't hold up to the abuse. I put four screws in each hub after that, but the damage was either already done, or it wasn't ever going to work. Here you can see the damage all the screws did. So I bought this handy cutter for my dremel and some VP scale hubs with the very cool "clamping" feature. Since I removed 6mm of the spline, I needed to remove 6mm of the tube so the hubs could slide on all the way. I have a new axle here, but wanted to 'test my skills' on this one first. I didn't even take it out of the car. Surprisingly it turned out really nice. I'll likely run this one for a while and just bench build the new one. Then it can be a simple swap at some point. Knuckles and steering back in place. I still need to tap the bolts top and bottom of each one. Happy with the outcome. Feels very solid. |

First day off work that it wasn't snowing or raining in a long time. So it took the sporty out to try out the new steering upgrades and shake the rust out after a very long winter. Unfortunately, I only got this one photo because it just wasn't running right. I've been fighting electrical gremlins in this rig for some time now and just couldn't figure out what was wrong.....today was no exception to problems. I peeked under the lid and saw some arcing on the back of the motor can. Suddenly I felt VERY stupid. I've got a carbon fiber motor guard......which of course conducts electricity. My old motor can kept it from touching anything, but the small can of the Holmes motor does not; and I just swapped it on without thinking. The guard was touching the positive and negative poles and no doubt was the cause of endless hours of chasing ghosts. Pulled the guard off, and the car has never, ever run this smoothly. I'm such a fool. Here's a picture of the guard. You can see the burn marks where it was arcing from one pole to the other. I only hope I didn't damage anything. Made it to the comp and got my $20......excellent. Otherwise, not so good. 4th place after my body ripped off, and cost me big time on course #2. Time to focus on this rig, and stop goofing around with the super mini....lol |
