| Question about the new (to me) underdrive bevel gear set
I went to change the rear out to an underdrive and I found that the new gears don't have the loading pins like the old ones did. This doesn't seem nearly as well made. Am I missing something here? I don't want to depend on the four tiny 1.5mm (or whatever they are) gear bolts to transmit all the force of the drive to the axles. What needs to be done here? Is there some new upgraded part that I am missing? Thanks |

this looks good to go on the locker, or you could change the locker with a spool

This spool maker has included holes for the drive pins. Are the drive pins not that big of an issue? I've run these stockers since I got the rig back in '08 this way. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axles...-fi-spool.html Last edited by Master Basher; 07-17-2014 at 07:17 PM.

The screws hold just fine, non issue, only the shitty stock pot metal gears have those pins.

Ur good to go man. The 4 screw's will do just fine.. Loctite them in an forget about it. Them 4 little screw's hold lots of gears together in crawlers and Big powered rock bouncers. |

Those pins take no load. They are there to locate/center the spider gear shaft in the diff housing when running an open diff.

I stripped a set of stock ring and pinions in one take off, then continued to trail, and they came back where the truck wouldn't propel its self on flat ground.

Don't forget to use a new paper gasket between the spool and ring gear. |

| Re: Question about the new (to me) underdrive bevel gear set I noticed that with no gasket in place the case doesn't touch the ring gear because the stock locker is too thick. That would put even more bad forces on the 4 small screws holding the thing together. Ideally, the case touches the ring gear and the screws are torqued enough to utilize friction between the gear and the case to turn the diff. Even more ideally, the "locating" pins fit snugly into the locating holes and take all the force. The plastic case holes are too sloppy for this to occur (imho), but a metal locker (aftermarket) may be made like this. I would say it is important to have the case half screwed tightly to the ring gear, and my diff wouldn't do that without a gasket. Otherwise, the screws (tiny little things too) are subject to the torque and will break eventually. |
