Crawlinhulls building a shafty?

Hey guys so this begins a real shafty build - gonna start with a homemade chassis - currently no real axles but I'll probably mock it up with some tlt's. this is gonna be slow but it will be comp worthy when we're done"thumbsup"

Re: Crawlinhulls building a shafty?

Sorry for the lack of info... and I should not have called it a home made chassis,, more like a home brew experiment. the vertical plates are from my old BWD Mantis that broke at Worlds last year. The skid is from a scx-10 I purchased 5 years ago - and basically sat unused since. And finally the shock arms are obviously from a xr-10 kit. So here we go"thumbsup"

So get home around 5 and before I can ask if any mail arrived (I'm waiting on some shock parts) my wife Emily says TA-DA and there on the table were a set of xr-10 modded ax-10 axles"thumbsup". When I ask where they came from she says The Purp hooked me up. So I must thank my wife Emily for the surprise and also to Purptr8r for building such a sweet set of axles... now to open them up....

This is progress so far - looks like shocks will need to be small in diameter

Figured out some rear uppers and in less than 2 hours:evil: made a rear upper link mount"thumbsup". Still need rear shocks, stretch out the front, electronics, and steering linkage (my biggest challenge)

Still not satisfied with steering but we're getting closer. Everything spins and articulates smoothly still have electronics to go

So far so good - rebuilt and drilled the case of the r2 (saved 8 grams) decased fxr, R603FF ( read HEAVY ) receiver and a CC beck

Still need - switch to heavier shock oil and rear springs
larger servo horn for more steering
new steering link to get bta "thumbsup"

Thoes are some wild looking side plates! Original fer sure. I like the re- purposing of some older stuff. I ran a sporty chassis i made with a stock XR-10 skid for a year or so but noticed a small problem after comping against other rigs at 2014 Nats in Rhode Island, When there is not enough lower link spacing at the skid, while climbing vertically at the point where the rig is about to reach its tipping point (over backwards) and the left front tire is at the crest of the climb and the right front is in the air, while under throttle to keep it from rolling back. I have never been able to get the right front to settle down (even with mad steering input) and overcome the torque twist created by the rear drive shaft. I had already tested and tuned my springs and oil for months to get it right for ALL the other situations. I hope there is not an issue like that on yours. Put your rig in that position and find out what happens. I am now running a new chassis which has more lower link spacing the rest of the new chassis has a similar geometry. It does not have the same problem. Let us know how well it works.

Re: Crawlinhulls building a shafty?

I noticed a small amount of right tire lift but it settled with opposite steering input- then stayed settled (as long as throttle input was slow) through the rest of the climb. Still having trouble deciding on wheels - so many choices and I still need to shrink wrap the naked fxr"thumbsup"
